Cleveland Play House’s issue-driven ‘Luna Gale’ too edifying to entertain Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics A year or two ago, a short play called “Legally Addicted” toured Cleveland-area schools and dramatized the opiate epidemic among teens in order to educate and advocate. Many of the kids in attendance – who received community service credit or reduced probation to be there – felt trapped within a public service announcement as the play’s didactic earnestness and frequent teaching moments overpowered things meant to be merely entertaining. Rebecca Gilman’s “Luna Gale” seems to have had a similar effect on its opening night audience at Cleveland Play House’s Allen Theatre. The following is needed at the Olde Towne Hall Theatre 36199 Center Ridge Rd. North Ridgeville, Ohio 44039. OTHT is a volunteer community theatre west of Cleveland, off of Rt 480. - Actress age 40-50! I am looking for another Charlotte Hay for "Moon Over Buffalo". Rehearsals are Sundays from 5-8 and Tuesday/Thursdays from 6:30-9.00 overall. Call Lisa at 440-865-8700 to schedule an audition. Rehearsals have already began. - Costumer (small stipend) - Prop Master Moon Over Buffalo is a raucous farce about a dysfunctional theater troupe performing at the Erlander Theatre in Buffalo, New York, in 1953. The diva lead actress, Charlotte Hay, is barely tolerant of her philandering semi-alcoholic husband, George, and mishaps and confusions arise for the company when presented the opportunity of famed film director Frank Capra attending a performance to possibly cast the two for a movie. Their temperamental daughter Rosalind splits time between fiancé Howard and ex-fiancé Paul, who works as the company’s stage manager. Charlotte’s nearly-deaf mother, Ethel, and Richard, a would-be suitor for Charlotte, make their contributions to the mayhem as Eileen, a young actress in the company, reveals her pregnancy to all. The hopeful actors sprint through the tangle of confusion to produce a woefully misbegotten mixture of two different plays in their hoped-for presentation piece, and in the play’s climactic scene, manage to set everything right by still more series of coincidences and mishaps. Overall, Moon over Buffalo is a fast-paced and energetic night of entertainment. Show dates: April 22, 23, 29, 30, and May 1, 6, 7 Show times: 7:30 p.m. (Except May 1st is at 3 p.m.) -- *Lisa L. Parma Symphony Orchestra Concert this Sunday

The Parma Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director Dr. Randolph P. Laycock, will perform a concert on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Valley Forge High School Auditorium located at 9999 Independence Boulevard in Parma Heights. The concert will feature: the World premiere of two pieces by composer Dr. Randy Rivera: “En Un Momento” and “With your Voice”. Also: “Armenian Lullaby for String Orchestra” by Dr. Loris Chobanian, Leroy Anderson’s “Serenata” and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 Composer Randy Rivera received his Master of Anesthesia from Case Western Reserve University and has been a successful anesthetist at Cleveland Metro hospital. He started his musical studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Professor Marshall Griffith. He continued his studies of music composition and orchestration with Professor Loris Chobanian at Baldwin Wallace University. Dr Chobanian has remarked: “The fact that Randy Rivera is a successful anesthetist makes his compositions truly remarkable. It is significant when a composer of successful compositions is also accomplished in a totally different profession”. The two Rivera compositions were originally conceived as songs with lyrics for voice and piano. They were later orchestrated for symphony orchestra. The Spanish text “En Un Momento’ depicts the moment one encounters an object of love for the first time. The second composition with English text “With Your Voice” is more spiritual and religious in nature. It acknowledges Devine protection and help to those who are needy. Randy Rivera is often in contact with Christian Missionaries who share their Voice of Hope in distant lands. The Chobanian Armenian Lullaby is based on a melody well known to Armenian families and a favorite with Armenian mothers. The orchestra, in its 47th season consists of 75 members of all walks of life from all over the entire Greater Cleveland area. They meet weekly for rehearsals and present at least four concerts annually. General admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Family passes of $20 are available for families of up to 2 adults and their children. All tickets are available at the door beginning at 2:30 PM. The Parma Symphony Orchestra is a self-supporting community orchestra in cooperation with the Parma City Schools. She performed principal roles with American Ballet Theatre and the National Ballet of Washington (D.C.), after beginning her career as a teenager with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Her New York City teaching credits include The Alvin Ailey School, Ballet Academy East, Ballet Tech, The Joffrey School and Juilliard. Ms. Mahler's extensive repertoire has included Myrta, Queen of the Wilis, in�Giselle; Swanilda in�Coppelia, Odette/Odile in the full-length�Swan Lake, the Flower Girl in�Gaite Parisienne, the Female Matchmaker in�Les Noces, the Elder Sister in�Pillar of Fire, �and Emilia in�The Moor's Pavane. She has also danced leads in�Les Sylphides,�Raymonda,�The Four Temperaments�and�Serenade. Roni Mahler was a guest artist with Australia's Sydney Festival Ballet and at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, and spent six years as director of Dance at Kansas State University (1974-1980.) She initiated their Dance degree program, co-founded and co-directed the KSU Dance Workshop, received an Outstanding Teaching Award in 1975 and was selected as an Outstanding Young Woman of America for the year 1978. She is the creator of a series of educational recordings and manuals devoted to ballet technique, as well as a program entitled "Ballet Movement For the Athlete" which she eventually customized for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League. In 1988, Ms. Mahler choreographed for Cynthia Gregory and Fernando Bujones at New York's City Center. She subsequently served as Artistic Advisor for Ms. Gregory and Company during their 1992 Taiwan tour. Roni Mahler is the recipient of the 2003 President's Award from the Dance Masters of America, the 1992 the Dance Educators of America Award and the 1994 Artistic Achievement Award from the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters. In 1996, she received the first annual Roni Mahler Award, established by Kansas State University and presented each year to honor outstanding effort on behalf of dance in the Manhattan community. In 1999, the University named a new ballet facility the Roni Mahler Studio. Ms. Mahler is the creator of three ballet instruction videos: "How To Improve Your Ballet Technique," "How To Improve Your Pirouettes" and "How To Improve Your Pointe Technique." Her fitness video entitled "Stretch It!" improves flexibility and range of motion. Since 1993, Roni Mahler has been an annual instructor at the acclaimed Rancho La Puerta Spa in Tecate, Mexico, where she is the guest presenter each year for its Ballet Weeks. She also taught ballet for Syracuse University's Tepper Semester in New York City and continues to offer master classes and seminars in this country and abroad. On Saturday, March 12, 2016, the Shaker Arts Council (“SHAC”) will present the world premiere staged reading of “The Bloodless Jungle,” written by Peter Lawson Jones. The event, a benefit for SHAC, will be held at the Karamu House, 2355 East 89th Street, Cleveland, OH 44106. The afternoon begins at 2:00 pm with the staged reading followed by a talk back Q & A. As an audience member you will have a unique opportunity to help shape the ultimate play by providing valuable feedback to the playwright and cast.
