Come dance with us! Come drum with us! Come and celebrate the Spirit of the Dance and the Drum!!! Join us at the 7th annual Cleveland African Dance and Drum Festival. This year's event celebrates the beautiful waters that are constantly moving and making changes in our lives. We pay tribute to the owner of the seas while interlacing a theatrical infusion of dance, poetry, drumming and song from June 18th to June 19th. Saturday and Sunday features a community-wide African dance and drum conference with master teachers from Senegal, Congo, Mali, Guinea and the United States. Saturday night features Dokhe Bou sèle tê rafet -“Beautiful Waters” – a Juneteenth Concert performance choreographed and produced by noted artist, choreographer and Artistic Director, Talise Campbell. Cleveland's own Djapo Cultural Arts Institute will join master teachers and area performers for a moving tribute in celebration of our continuing legacy, conceivable through the sweet waters. The Myers' family has been on the road for nine months, but it's more than a vacation for them. Young performers Cara and Colin Myers are performing in the National Road Tour of the historical musical *Ragtime*, and mother Julie is along for the ride. Father and husband Kevin Michael Myers -- also a fellow actor -- had to stay behind in Cleveland for work, but he visits them as often as he can along their journey. Area playgoers can see the Myers siblings in* Ragtime -- *features a Tony Award-winning score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens and a Tony-winning book by Terrence McNally -- when it performs this weekend in Toledo at the Stranahan Theater, located at 4645 Heatherdowns Boulevard. The Manhattan Project is a low-stakes, nonthreatening place for actors and playwrights to meet and work together. Based on the Theatre Lab model taught at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama and inspired by The Brooklyn Generator in New York, The Manhattan Project wants to introduce Cleveland actors and playwrights to each other by organizing a bi-monthly production of brand new 10-minute plays. Participating artists will meet early in the month and will be broken into teams, each with one playwright. The playwright will then be given a writing prompt to write a new 10-minute play based on the prompt and including all the team's actors. The rest of the evening the team members will get to know each other and get a feel for each other's skills and voices. The teams will reconvene later in the month to perform these plays for each other. These 10-minute plays are not an end in themselves. Through these small collaborations we hope to build relationships between the two most vulnerable artists in theatre; the actors who put themselves on stage and the playwrights who pour themselves onto the page. Perhaps these 10-minute plays will grow into longer works or maybe these collaborations will become partnerships on larger projects.
