ABOUT THE EVENT: Started in the basement of a flower shop, the #EPCooker is an artist driven event that sees over 100 audience members, 20 performances and 6 non-stop hours of art. Registration for performers begins at 7:30 pm. Performances begin between 8:00 - 8:30 pm. Anyone may sign up for a 10-minute slot. Performers may pre-register at watheatre.com/epcooker. An emcee, house drum kit, keyboard and sound system (with operators) are provided. This month's emcee is one of Akron's finest performers: Natalie Martin!!! ALL varieties of acts are encouraged to perform. Previous acts have included: monologues, acoustic musicians, play readings, comedians, experimental art, dancers, scenes from plays, improv, devised work, full rock bands and performance artists. Food and alcohol are permitted in the theatre. ABOUT THE EMCEE: Natalie Grace Martin is Akron's transgender sweetheart. She earned her degree in Contemporary Vocal Performance from Musician's Institute in Hollywood, CA, and upon returning to Ohio in 2009, fronted the reggae/rock band Mr. Maze, won the grand prize in the 2011 Gorilla Battle of the Bands in Cleveland, and released 2 solo albums for Vindicated Records out of Columbus. After a year-long retirement, she reemerged on the music scene as Natalie and took up a residence at Uncorked Wine Bar, where she plays the first Wednesday of every month. She has been a featured musician at the 2016 Akron Big Love Fest, the 2015 Cleveland Trans Day of Remembrance, the 2016 Trans Day of Visibility Rally, and the TransOhio 2016 Symposium in Columbus. She also plays keys/bass guitar for Akron local rock band Twin Atomic. She lives in Wadsworth with her daughter Penny and her son Mac. ABOUT BIGGER THAN A BREADBOX: Building on the success of Wandering Aesthetics’ reoccurring Electric Pressure Cooker Cabaret, Bigger Than a Breadbox (BTAB) draws inspiration from Akron’s historic ties to vaudeville. Using this vaudevillian blueprint, BTAB will be a dynamic quarterly event that celebrates artistic excellence and unites audiences through affordable access to a revolving lineup of high quality performers. Porthouse performs minor miracle with ‘Sister Act’ Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics It’s hard to pin-point the precise moment when nuns became fun. But it may have started with the 1985 creation of “Nunsense,” where it and its many sequels turned singing and dancing sisters into a musical comedy franchise. So it was no surprise when the 1992 nun-on-the-run motion picture “Sister Act,” starring comedian Whoopie Goldberg, was infused with music by Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid”), witty lyrics by Glenn Slater (“School of Rock”), more clever repartee by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner (TV’s “Cheers”) and one-liners by shtickmeister Douglas Carter Beane (“Xanadu”), and turned into a Broadway musical. The short-lived show received five 2011 Tony Award nominations – it won none – and was called “tame, innocuous and frankly a little dull” by The New York Times. Its national tour, which came through Cleveland in 2013, lived up to the press and was a huge disappointment. And yet, the production currently being staged at Porthouse Theatre hits on all cylinders. It’s a musical theater miracle, though one more accurately attributed to the creative invention of director Eric van Baars than divine intervention. *The Musical Theater Project is looking for exceptional teaching artists to bring the joy of musical theater to elementary school students throughout Northeast Ohio during the 2016-17 school year!* Explore the themes, stories and characters of classic musicals like Peter Pan and The Wizard Of Oz through dance, song and creative play. Our critically acclaimed Kids Love Musicals! program continues to grow, and we need gifted teachers and performers willing to share their art and heart. Function: · Deliver services related to Kids Love Musicals! (KLM), an educational outreach residency and workshop program grounded in classic musical theater and TMTP’s educational approach · Provide feedback and information to assess and modify the program as appropriate Responsibilities: · Work with TMTP staff and consultants to learn curriculum, songs, and preferred teaching strategies and program outcomes; participates in continued training as required by TMTP · Implement KLM’s structured curriculum supporting: State of Ohio curriculum standards in English Language Arts and theater arts; best practices in intergenerational programming and special education environments; and desired outcomes for Social and Emotional Learning · Lead classes in Northeast Ohio schools through singing, acting and dancing to explore the stories of five classic musicals: "Cinderella," "Peter Pan," "The Wizard of Oz," “The Jungle Book,” and “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown.” · Facilitate discussion in personally meaningful themes such as overcoming inhibitions, achieving dreams, peer pressure, friendship, and valuing individuals beyond surface appearance · Arrive for scheduled programs on time and prepared; ensure that programs are on schedule within allotted classroom times; work with teachers to guide students in relevant and appropriate behavior/actions. · Participate in self-evaluation strategies as requested; support TMTP’s assessment objectives and practices for each residency or workshop. · Communicate with TMTP staff regularly; consult TMTP’s calendars and request necessary information from TMTP staff; track and report hours and program results at the conclusion of each workday. Qualifications: TMTP Teaching Artists are: · Mature, responsible and enthusiastic individuals who enjoy sharing their passion with students, specifically in grades K-5, and potentially with students in K-12 special education classrooms. · Capable of independently leading exciting and challenging classes that engage students and use multiple teaching strategies to deliver lesson plans. · Role models who build meaningful connections with students through positive reinforcement, effective classroom management and clear boundaries. · Committed to the art form of musical theater and/or arts education Additional qualifications: · Demonstrated performance and singing experience · Strong interpersonal and group facilitation skills · Ability to meet performance standards including attendance, reporting and punctuality · Reliable automobile · Successful completion of criminal background check process. Teaching artists work 2-4 days per week, typically 5-6 hours per day during school hours (between 8am-3pm). Teaching artists work as independent contractors with our *Kids Love Musicals!* program.
