Cleveland Asian Festival – Big Numbers, Big Success

The record-breaking crowd of 48,800 at the 7th annual Cleveland Asian Festival (CAF) broke another record: They spent over $3 million in Cleveland’s AsiaTown neighborhood that weekend. Survey results from attendees of the popular Cleveland Asian Festival indicate continued and growing satisfaction for the attendees and financial and other benefits to the AsiaTown neighborhood and city of Cleveland. 31% of those who answered the surveys attended both days (Saturday and Sunday) of the Festival. 32% spent over 3 hours at the Festival and 70% attended with 2 or more people. 30% of the attendees attended the Cleveland Asian Festival for the first time. Wayne Wong, who served as Master of Ceremonies on the JACK Casino stage, asked the audience how many were making their first trip to AsiaTown and about one third raised their hand. The residual benefit to the AsiaTown neighborhood are dramatic as seen by the responses indicating that 75% of those surveyed said they are very likely to shop at an AsiaTown business in the next year. A whopping 96% plan on returning to AsiaTown within the next year to at least visit. The satisfaction of the record crowds can be related to the experience (7 years!) and hard work of the all-volunteer board and staff. CAF co-founder Johnny Wu says “It is the little improvements that can make a big difference to attendees. For example, we worked hard on parking and the satisfaction level of those surveyed about parking rose to 82%.” The K-Pop dance competition was a huge success and seating filled up quickly with many hundreds standing outside the tent to watch. The other entertainment, varied food choices, family activities, shopping area and health pavilion were also cited as favorites. Perhaps the most impressive survey result is that 97% believe that the Cleveland Asian Festival benefits Greater Cleveland and 97% also plan on returning for the 2017 Cleveland Asian Festival which will be held *May 20 and 21, 2017*. *About the Cleveland Asian Festival* The Cleveland Asian Festival is an annual celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage month in May in Cleveland’s Asiatown neighborhood. Review of "Alice in Wonderland" at the Shaw Festival

Shaw Festival’s ‘Alice’ is curiouser but none the wiser Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics It may be one of the most published books in history, but Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” – with its literary nonsense, disorienting rhythms and fantastic characters – does not translate well to the stage. At least, not in the production currently on stage at the Shaw Festival. Director Peter Hinton’s musical adaptation, which has been three years in the making, embellishes the surreptitious imagination that drives young, Victorian-era Alice’s journey into a rabbit hole and the upside-down world she encounters there. And he does so by using state-of-the-art technology and brilliant design to create visually stimulating and often astounding images. But the story gets blinded by the dazzling special effects, sacrificing emotional resonance for theatrical extravagance. Shaw Festival’s ‘Mrs Warren’s Profession’ still provocative Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics “Mrs Warren’s Profession,” under Eda Holmes’ direction, is superb in so many ways that a few demand discussion. Bernard Shaw’s play centers on the relationship between Mrs. Kitty Warren (Nicole Underhay) and her 22-year-old daughter Vivie (Jennifer Dzialoszynski), who just completed a degree at Cambridge and is transitioning to a career as an actuary in London. Vivie learns over the course of the play that her mysteriously single and long estranged mother is a former prostitute and current brothel owner. When confronted, Kitty boldly defends her career choice in light of the limited employment opportunities available to poor women in Victorian Britain. Prostitution, she argues in one of Shaw’s most commanding monologues, is not a moral issue; it’s an economic one. Vivie calls her mother “stronger than all England.” But when she learns that her mother continues to work in this profession, driven by the social standing her wealth provides, Shaw – through Vivie – offers biting commentary on the hypocritical state of the Union Jack. Though Shaw completed the writing of this play in 1893, it was banned by censors and rejected by at least 12 theatres, two music halls, three hotels and two picture-galleries because of its focus on – and sanctification of – the oldest profession. That is, until 1902, when a private performance was presented at a small London theater club exempt from The Lord Chamberlain’s Examiner of Plays.
