Summer Tap Dance Jams!

FREE monthly tap jams this summer. 2nd Sundays at 2pm. These are open to ALL ages and ability levels and we'll decide exactly what to do based on who shows up. For example, if a lot of folks who don't do much improv show up we can do some fun improv exercises to help you feel more comfortable. If everyone is already comfortable, we'll just put on music and jam. If we get tired of improv we can swap fun rudiments/steps. It is very open. We have 2 jams scheduled: - Sunday July 10th at 2pm - Sunday August 14 at 2pm Location is at Cleveland City Dance on Shaker Square. Free parking is available in the lot behind the studio. The Board of Trustees decided to close the theater after regretfully accepting the retirement of its Artistic Director, MaryJo Alexander. "The theater has been a remarkable asset to Akron," said board president Sarah Beth Emberger, "but the board felt that without the artistic and managerial leadership of MaryJo, the theater couldn’t continue." Incorporated in 1998; Actors’ Summit opened its first production, "The Price" in April of 1999 with Actors’ Summit founder, Neil Thackaberry directing. MaryJo and Neil managed every aspect of the theater - from play selection, through casting, directing, marketing, design, grant writing, to creating the sets, props and costumes for every show presented at the theater. Actors’ Summit produced over 141 shows; plus cabarets and children’s shows; hired over 741 artists (actors, directors, and musicians) and moved the theater 11 times during its 17 seasons. Neil Thackaberry, Founder and Artistic Director Emeritus retired last year. In August of 2016, Actors’ Summit will permanently close its doors. "It’s been a wonderful opportunity" MaryJo remarked at the Monday Board meeting. "We’ve had the good fortune of working with some of Northeast Ohio’s most talented actors’ and artists, made wonderful friends, and been part of an amazing community. I am extremely proud of the work we have done and the arts jobs we have created." Emberger remarked: "It has been an honor to facilitate and support the work of two dedicated and exceptional artists. We are deeply saddened to lose Actors’ Summit. Neil and MaryJo are Actors’ Summit." MaryJo and Neil, who recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary, had the good fortune to work with their extended family at the theater. Their elder daughter Constance Thackaberry directed, stage managed and acted with the company in addition to her role as Senior Artistic Associate. Sasha Thackaberry, their younger daughter, served as stage manager, choreographer, director and performer. The daughter's spouses, Keith Stevens and Peter Voinovich were active as Equity performers, and worked as volunteers assisting with set construction, handling sound design, as well as guest directing. "The stock phrase when someone retires is: ‘spend more time with my family.’ I have had the honor to work every day for the past 17 years with my partner, and not everyone is that lucky," said MaryJo. The theater will be closing on a high note. After 141 productions it will turn out the lights with no debt. "We’re proud that, as in any good business, we have paid our bills and have kept faith with our customers, our vendors, and the foundations that have so generously supported us over the years," said Thackaberry. "We are deeply grateful to Mayor Dan Horrigan’s office, and Greg Mervis of the Akron Convention and Visitors Bureau for their generous ongoing support. “Akron’s support of the arts has been fantastic. We opened our first production inside Greystone Hall in 1999 while it was still the Masonic Temple," remarked MaryJo, "and we are honored to have called it our theatrical home for so long." "We have also been fortunate to have had so many dedicated theater devotees and career professionals assist us as members of our board of trustees. Neil and I are deeply gratefully to the men and women who have given of their time and talents to assist us with all of our business endeavors, fundraising, and marketing efforts. " "We want to thank not only all the individual contributors who have helped the theater, but the foundations who have supported us and allowed us to grow" said Alexander. Foundations who have provided major support over the last few years include: The Ohio Arts Council, GAR Foundation, John S. & James L. Knight Foundation, Akron Community Foundation and the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation. Thank you to our many dedicated volunteers as well. And a special thanks to Dave Lieberth, who facilitated Actors’ Summit’s return to Akron. Actors’ Summit has produced a number of regional premieres including "Copenhagen"; "My Mothers’ Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding" (including a revival for the Gay Games in 2014); "John Brown and the Fight Against Slavery"; "Nat King Cole and Friends"; "Tremont"; "A Girl’s Guide to Coffee" ; "Freud’s Last Session"; the National New Play Network premiere of "Manning Up"; "A Murder Mystery and a Marriage"; "Motherhood Out Loud"; "Main Travelled Roads"; and "Bully" among many others. *The Musical Theater Project is looking for exceptional teaching artists to bring the joy of musical theater to elementary school students throughout Northeast Ohio during the 2016-17 school year!* Explore the themes, stories and characters of classic musicals like Peter Pan and The Wizard Of Oz through dance, song and creative play. Our critically acclaimed Kids Love Musicals! program continues to grow, and we need gifted teachers and performers willing to share their art and heart. Function: · Deliver services related to Kids Love Musicals! (KLM), an educational outreach residency and workshop program grounded in classic musical theater and TMTP’s educational approach · Provide feedback and information to assess and modify the program as appropriate Responsibilities: · Work with TMTP staff and consultants to learn curriculum, songs, and preferred teaching strategies and program outcomes; participates in continued training as required by TMTP · Implement KLM’s structured curriculum supporting: State of Ohio curriculum standards in English Language Arts and theater arts; best practices in intergenerational programming and special education environments; and desired outcomes for Social and Emotional Learning · Lead classes in Northeast Ohio schools through singing, acting and dancing to explore the stories of five classic musicals: "Cinderella," "Peter Pan," "The Wizard of Oz," “The Jungle Book,” and “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown.” · Facilitate discussion in personally meaningful themes such as overcoming inhibitions, achieving dreams, peer pressure, friendship, and valuing individuals beyond surface appearance · Arrive for scheduled programs on time and prepared; ensure that programs are on schedule within allotted classroom times; work with teachers to guide students in relevant and appropriate behavior/actions. · Participate in self-evaluation strategies as requested; support TMTP’s assessment objectives and practices for each residency or workshop. · Communicate with TMTP staff regularly; consult TMTP’s calendars and request necessary information from TMTP staff; track and report hours and program results at the conclusion of each workday. Qualifications: TMTP Teaching Artists are: · Mature, responsible and enthusiastic individuals who enjoy sharing their passion with students, specifically in grades K-5, and potentially with students in K-12 special education classrooms. · Capable of independently leading exciting and challenging classes that engage students and use multiple teaching strategies to deliver lesson plans. · Role models who build meaningful connections with students through positive reinforcement, effective classroom management and clear boundaries. · Committed to the art form of musical theater and/or arts education Additional qualifications: · Demonstrated performance and singing experience · Strong interpersonal and group facilitation skills · Ability to meet performance standards including attendance, reporting and punctuality · Reliable automobile · Successful completion of criminal background check process. PRESS RELEASE Off the plane from San Francisco: Verb Ballets Hosts Choreographer Charles Anderson Former New York City Ballet Dancer and Founder of Company C Contemporary Ballet CLEVELAND, OH - Verb Ballets is proud to welcome national choreographer Charles Anderson in studio the week of June 27-July 1, 2016. Anderson is a former member of New York City Ballet and has become one of the leading forces of the San Francisco Bay Area contemporary dance movement. Anderson began choreographing ballets while still a dancer with the New York City Ballet, and he co-founded and acted as artistic director for Ballet, Inc. in New York, where he choreographed many of his early works. He later founded Company C Contemporary Ballet in 2002, where he currently serves as Artistic Director in San Francisco. Verb Ballets welcomes guest choreographer Anderson into the studio to set the company premiere of his striking ballet, Aposiopesis. This contemporary full ensemble ballet is an ode to abstraction exploring a circular theme visually sweeping the stage to reveal expansive arches and broad curves. Anderson's work reflects a blend of classical and contemporary influences and is included in the repertories of professional dance companies throughout the country. Verb Ballets looks forward to hosting Anderson and adding to the wealth of company repertory. ABOUT THE SHOW In the wake of a catastrophic drought, mega-corporation Urine Good Company has passed laws forbidding private restrooms and requiring payment for the usage of public ones, to conserve water. Those who do not pay for "The Privilege to Pee" are sent to a mysteriously ominous place known only as Urinetown. For twenty years the poor have been oppressed by ridiculous prices, until one day a young Public Amenity Attendant leads an uprising of the poor against the tyranny of their oppressors. Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, Urinetown is a show brimming with wickedly modern wit, and a sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter! Senator Fipp-Vocal Range: Bass A corrupt Senator who hides all his crimes through politics. A creepy character who seems to lurk in all the wrong places.
