"On the 20th Century" On Stage for Hudson Players Show dates are April 28 and 29, May 5, 6, 12, 13, 14 (matinee), 19 and 20. The 20th Century Limited was one of the most well-known trains in the world, with famous, infamous, and not-so-famous passengers intermingling with each other while basking in the lap of luxury for 16 hours between Chicago and New York City. For the final show of the Hudson Players season, the legendary train and its zany passengers are the brought back to life in On the Twentieth Century, a classic screwball comedy musical with book and lyrics by Adolph Green and Betty Comden and music by Cy Coleman. Love and mischief collide on the tracks when down on this luck and bankrupt theater producer Oscar Jaffee, the flamboyant impresario with a sinking reputation after four flops in a row, embarks on a madcap mission to cajole the glamorous Lily Garland, a Hollywood star and former Jaffee protégé - and lover - into playing the lead in his new, and currently nonexistent, epic drama. Is the 16-hour train ride long enough to reignite the spark between these former lovers, create a play from scratch, and find the money to have it produced on Broadway? Throw in a rival producer with his own agenda, a wealthy religious nut, Oscar's henchmen and various passengers and crew members that add zest to the merry, madcap journey. Part operetta, part farce and all fun, On the Twentieth Century is a great night of musical theatre. The winner of five Tony awards during its original run back in the late 70s, the show featured John Cullum, Madeline Kahn and Kevin Kline. A Broadway revival in 2015 showcased Kristin Chenoweth's talents as Lily. Dave Stebbins is directing and serving as musical director. His last outing for Hudson Players was Spamalot, another crowd-pleasing zany musical. Ron Jones, most recently musical director for Mary Poppins, is the assistant musical director. Amie Gabel is the choreographer and Tim Steiner has designed an amazing set along with serving as technical director for the show. Gary Maher and Jennifer Matas are the producers. The characters of Oscar and Lily are played by Don Bernardo and Chandra Porter. Mike Guffey and Sean Donovan play Oscar' loyal henchmen, while Jim Wolf is Lily's new boyfriend. Nathan Hill plays the role of a rival producer and Sharon Lloyd is the wacky religious nut who may or may not have the money to fund Oscar's new venture. Brian Diehl plays multiple roles, including a congressman caught in an embarrassing situation in a train car and Shelley Palumbo is a diva from Oscar and Lily's past. Genevieve Adelman, Brenda Willis, Carol Tymchenko, Chantel Covino, Len Reinker, Chris Macchione and Benjamin Mudrak round out the cast playing a variety of passengers, porters, reporters and photographers Curtain Time is 8 p.m., except for the Sunday May 14 performance which is a special 2:00 pm matinee. CLEVELAND, OH - Great Lakes Theater will present CAMP THEATER! – a summer drama camp held at Berea-Midpark High School for students ages 4-18. Students can sign up for one or both weeks of camp, which will run June 12 – 16, and June 19 - 23, 2017. Immersing students in interactive and educational theater-based activities, CAMP THEATER! is a unique opportunity for students to work with and learn from Great Lakes Theater’s professional teaching artists in a fun, safe and supportive environment. Daily classes will be held at Berea-Midpark High School in one-week sessions from Monday through Friday. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 17, 2017 Great Lakes Theater Announces Auditions for Actor/Teachers Great Lakes Theater (GLT) announces auditions for non-Equity actor/teachers for its School Residency Program for the 2017 – 2018 school year. Actors of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to audition. These are full-time, seasonal, paid positions, offered from August/September, 2017 through May, 2018. Requirements include an undergraduate degree in any discipline, as well as previous stage experience or actor training. Teaching experience or prior work with elementary, junior high or high school age students is a plus, but not required. Applicants must have a valid driver license, a reliable automobile and complete a background check. Applicants are requested to prepare one Shakespearean monologue and one contrasting contemporary monologue for the audition. Both monologues should total no more than three minutes combined. All auditions are by appointment only. Applicants must schedule an audition online. Examining "Turkey in the Straw" Please join us Tuesday, April 25th at 7:00pm as Beck Center for the Arts music faculty member, Christine King presents a workshop for fiddlers of all abilities, focusing on a staple song of traditional American fiddling. Why is Turkey in the Straw one of the most requested songs in fiddling? Where did it come from and what makes it so popular? In this workshop, we look at the history of the song, and learn a core version that can be adapted to suit even more intermediate to advanced fiddlers. She has played in many acoustic bands all over the world including The Railsplitters (progressive bluegrass), Coral Creek String Band (Americana) and Bonnis and the King (Americana). She specializes in teaching Texas Style and Bluegrass Fiddling, teaching techniques within the context of songs, instead of in isolated exercises. Ms. King believes that Fiddle music is social by nature, and wants her students to have as many opportunities to play with other musicians as possible - building a tune repertoire while also working on fundamental skills. She accepts a variety of students - from advanced players looking for something new, to beginners of all ages. Ms. King has herself studied with teachers such as Katie Glassman, Casey Driessen, Brittany Haas, Enion Pelta-Tiller, Bruce Molsky, Jason Carter, and Billy Contreras.
