April 18, 2017 Weathervane Playhouse presents Annie Baker's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Flick Beautiful, moving, keen, and insightful, "The Flick" explores the humor and significance of the mundane. AKRON, OH - Join Weathervane Playhouse as we turn the stage of the Founders Theater into a run-down movie house for our upcoming production of Annie Baker's humorous and moving The Flick May 4 through 14. In a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35-millimeter film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on the screen. With a keen insight and finely-tuned comic eye, The Flick is a hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world. The Flick was commissioned by Playwrights Horizon in New York City, where it received its world premiere on March 12, 2013. Following its limited engagement there, the production transferred to the off-Broadway Barrow Street Theatre, where it played from May 7, 2015, to Jan. 10, 2016. Among its many honors, The Flick won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the 2013 OBIE Award for Playwriting and the 2013 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. The Flick was also a 2013 Drama Desk Award nominee for Outstanding Play, a 2013 Lucille Lortel Award nominee for Outstanding Play and was a finalist for the 2013 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play. Director Craig Joseph says "The Flick is not so much plot-driven as it is a character study of folks who both desire to connect with one another authentically, and also fear being entirely known. What makes for good drama in The Flick is watching how they each navigate both the joys and pains of becoming oneself. Annie Baker is a playwright and teacher who won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for her play The Flick. Among her works are the Shirley, Vermont plays, which take place in the fictional town of Shirley: Circle Mirror Transformation, Body Awareness, and The Aliens. Baker graduated from the Department of Dramatic Writing at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in playwriting from Brooklyn College in 2009. CLEVELAND, OH - Great Lakes Theater will present CAMP THEATER! – a summer drama camp held at Berea-Midpark High School for students ages 4-18. Students can sign up for one or both weeks of camp, which will run June 12 – 16, and June 19 - 23, 2017. Immersing students in interactive and educational theater-based activities, CAMP THEATER! is a unique opportunity for students to work with and learn from Great Lakes Theater’s professional teaching artists in a fun, safe and supportive environment. Daily classes will be held at Berea-Midpark High School in one-week sessions from Monday through Friday. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 1, 2017 Great Lakes Theater Announces Auditions for Actor/Teachers Great Lakes Theater (GLT) announces auditions for non-Equity actor/teachers for its School Residency Program for the 2017 – 2018 school year. Actors of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to audition. These are full-time, seasonal, paid positions, offered from August/September, 2017 through May, 2018. Requirements include an undergraduate degree in any discipline, as well as previous stage experience or actor training. Teaching experience or prior work with elementary, junior high or high school age students is a plus, but not required. Applicants must have a valid driver license, a reliable automobile and complete a background check. Applicants are requested to prepare one Shakespearean monologue and one contrasting contemporary monologue for the audition. Both monologues should total no more than three minutes combined. Behind-the-Scenes: Cleveland Play House CARE Monologues Take a FREE peek inside the 2017 New Ground Theatre Festival Saturday, May 13, 2017 | 5 – 6 p.m. In this special Behind-the-Scenes event, you will learn more about the CARE (Compassionate Arts Remaking Education) program, screen a selection of the monologues performed by professional actors, and hear from CPH’s artistic and educational staff about the entire process. If schedules align, participating playwrights might join. Cleveland Play House has commissioned 16 playwrights to create 32 monologues for our prestigious CARE curriculum. Funded by the US Department of Education, CARE aims to provide scholars in urban school districts with high-quality theatre education programs, while improving English Language Arts skills and Social Emotional Competencies. The monologues were developed specifically with our Cleveland Metropolitan School district students in mind and explore a wide range of emotions including joy, pride, despair, worry, and anger.
