Hirson, Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz Join us…We’ve got magic to do” Pippin is the story of a young prince, heir to the throne, who is searching for his own “corner of the sky.” Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness, and a fulfilling purpose in life. As encouraged by the Leading Player, Pippin dabbles in bloody battle, lusty liaisons, and savvy politics, only to discover that true happiness is more complicated than he thought. Pippin is both a humorous story about growing up and a dark tale of the dangers of false appearances and empty promises. Character Breakdown: The director hopes to make this cast as diverse as possible without changing the text. Leading Player The ultimate 'ring leader.' Masterfully charming and manipulative, the Leading Player is a chameleon of sorts. Guides Pippin through his own story and tries to intervene at the end. excellent dancer. He is longing to find his purpose in life. Naive, innocent, and discontent. Eventually finds love, and meaning in life, with Catherine and Theo. As the King of the Holy Roman Empire, Charlemagne is more comfortable wielding a sword than breaking bread. He wears his years with great pride. Gender: Male Vocal range top: E4 / Vocal range bottom: G2 Lewis Pippin’s half-brother. He loves the limelight. Fastrada Pippin's conniving stepmother. A seductress, who is no stranger to deceit and betrayal, she is both sexy and smart. Skilled at using her sexual appeal to benefit her and her son. Gender: Female Vocal range top: F5 / Vocal range bottom: A3 Berthe Pippin's saucy grandmother. A brassy broad full of wisdom, grace, and sass. She tries to help Pippin and encourages him to live his life to the fullest. Gender: Female Vocal range top: C5 / Vocal range bottom: E3 Catherine A widow and mother. She is a beautiful and a hopeless romantic, who possesses graceful elegance. Encounters Pippin at his lowest point and eventually falls in love with him. Bay Village Community Theater will perform the next reading in its 2017 "All the World's a Stage[d Reading] series with a performance of excerpts from "Inherit the Wind" written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. This is the play that has as its genesis in the events of the famous Scopes trial. One of the most outstanding dramas of our time, Darrow (Drummond) and Bryan (Brady) battle in court to see whether evolution could be taught in public schools. Bob Kenderes, Paul Runevitch, Micheal Strama and Jessica Williams bring these excerpts alive under the direction of Tim Peebles. Beck Center’s ‘City of Angels’ missing its wings Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics “Three million people in the City of Angels,” says Stone, the hard-boiled private eye in the film noir screenplay being written by a novelist-turned-filmmaker named Stine. “Easily half of them up to something they don’t want the other half to know.” It’s the 1940s in the Tony Award-winning musical “City of Angels,” currently on stage at the Beck Center for the Arts, and Stone’s voiceover observation reveals as much about his dark and sinister celluloid world as the sleazy Hollywood industry young Stine is now a part of. Both worlds unfold in alternating spurts in this intriguing musical, as both Stine (the immensely charming Jamie Koeth) and Stone (played with just the right amount of gumshoe cynicism by Rob Albrecht) fight their respective demons and eventually draw from each other’s’ strengths to persevere in true Hollywood ending fashion. It’s a clever conceit and one well executed by the immense talent on and behind the stage. And yet, this telling of “City of Angels” unfolds as if its wings were clipped and never quite takes off.
