*Lakeland Civic Theatre* *Auditions for* *Merrily We Roll Along* Music and Lyrics by *Stephen Sondheim* Book by *George Furth* Directed by *Martin Friedman* Musical Direction by *Jordan Cooper* Sound Designed by *Eric Simna* *The Play:* *Merrily We Roll Along, *written in 1981, is based on a 1934 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. The musical (with a book by George Furth) was first produced in November of 1981, where it ran for 17 performances. Not very successful eh? It tells of the disintegration of the friendship of successful songwriter Franklin Shepard, his lyricist and best friend Charlie Kringas, and novelist Mary Flynn. The action moves backward through time, from 1976 to 1957. This is one of Stephen Sondheim’s most accessible and difficult scores. It is most certainly about friendship and its importance in the lives of three people. This show has great personal meaning to me. And while the book is problematic; I am confident that our production team and the actors that are cast can overcome this. This is one great play. And the roles; did I mention the roles? Each one of these six folks are wonderful roles with fully realized characterizations and motivations. It will take special actors/singers to breathe life into these people. *Audition Information:* *Auditions will be held on Monday and Tuesday, October 23 and 24 at Lakeland Community College in Building D at 7:15pm. NO APPOINTMENTS ARE NECESSARY. * *Please: **One 32 bar cut in the style of the show. A Sondheim piece is preferred. A strong command of musical styles and vocal athleticism is greatly needed for this show.* *You need only come to one of the audition dates**. YOU DO NOT NEED AN AUDITION TIME. JUST SHOW UP AT 7:15 AND WE WILL HAVE YOU SING and then READ. * *CALLBACKS will be held on Wednesday, October 25 between 7:15 and 9:00pm.* *ALL ROLES ARE COMPENSATED. Sorry, no EQUITY contracts for this show. * *The Roles:* *Frank:* *Mid to late 30’s. Male. Piano playing experience is a bonus**. Range: A2 –Bb4.* *Charlie: **Mid to late 30’s. Male. ** Range: A#2- G#4.* *Mary:* *Mid to late 30’s. Female. ** Range: G3-Gb5.* *Beth: **Mid to late 30’s. Female. ** Range: A3-G5.* *Joe:* *Mid to late 40’s. Male. **Range: A2-F#4.* *Gussie: **Early 30’s. Female. ** Range: G3-C5.* *The ENSEMBLE**: 6-8 individuals (male and female) that will play a multitude of characters and will have much to sing. Mid 20’s to mid 40’s. This is not a chopped liver ensemble.* *Production and Rehearsal Dates:* *Merrily We Roll Along **will open on Friday, February 2, 2018 and run through February 18, 2018. There will be nine (9) shows; that is three (3) weeks of performances. There will be two performances at a Nighttown on Monday, January 8 and Monday January 23. Rehearsals will begin in early November based upon your schedules. Specific characters will be created based on the actors cast. About the play... This holiday season, the infamous sisters are BACK! This time, taking matters into their own hands... wink wink. Join Holly and Jolly Loush (aka The Loush Sisters) for their deeply anticipated return to the stage in a bawdy, boozy, over-the-top holiday cabaret. Fueled by song, sidekicks and a hefty dose of "holiday cheer," the Loush Sisters battle villains and attempt to avert disaster in this radical satirization of America's favorite holiday classic... Die Hard. About The Loush Sisters... Originally created in 2003 for a Cleveland Public Theatre special event, The Loush Sisters have become a favorite of CPT audiences, performing in 2011 at Playhouse Square's 14th Street Theatre and in 2013 and 2015 at CPT with The Loush Sisters DO the Nutcracker and The Loush Sisters Love Dickn's to critical acclaim. The brain children of Liz Conway, Michael Seevers, Jr. and Beth Wood, The Sisters are an unapologetically raunchy, lounge-singing duo. (Imagine Saturday Night Live's Sweeney Sisters (1980's) but raunchier & more inappropriate.) About the process... There may be a workshop period to develop material from September 16th - October 21st. There may be 1 - 2 rehearsals a week during this period for some cast members. Full rehearsals will begin on October 16th with 5 - 6 rehearsals a week. Performances are November 24th through December 17th; Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in CPT's Gordon Square Theatre. Auditions... Tickets are now on sale at the Playhouse Square Ticket Office. 2017-2018 SEASON Dance begins the season with a performance by GroundWorks DanceTheater, running October 13 and 14, 2017 on the Allen Theatre Mainstage. As the resident professional dance company of the CSU Department of Theatre and Dance, GroundWorks returns under the artistic direction of David Shimotakahara. The theatre season opens on the Allen Theatre Mainstage with the Stephen Sondheim musical, COMPANY. Running October 26 - November 5, 2017, this honest look at modern adult relationships is considered a trailblazer, and is the winner of seven Tony Awards. Directed by Russ Borski. The second theatre production is EMOTIONAL CREATURE - THE SECRET LIFE OF GIRLS AROUND THE WORLD, running February 22 - March 4, 2018 in The Helen Rosenfeld Lewis Bialosky Lab Theatre. Penned by Eve Ensler of The Vagina Monologues, EMOTIONAL CREATURE (EC) is performed by an all-female cast and comprised of original monologues about and for young women. Directed by Holly Holsinger. The Dance Program returns to the Allen Theatre Mainstage with its popular annual CSU SPRING DANCE CONCERT, March 23 and 24, 2018. Featuring the CSU Dance Company, faculty, staff, musicians and guest artists, this repertory concert, under the direction of Lynn Deering, includes an eclectic evening of contemporary and traditional choreography. Running April 5-15, 2018 in The Outcalt Theatre, the final theatre production of the season is Peter Weiss's groundbreaking MARAT/SADE. Fully titled The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade, the production will feature Associate Professor of Theatre Dr. Michael Mauldin in the role of the Marquis de Sade. Directed by Allan Byrne. WILDLY OUTRAGEOUS “NEIGHBORS” OPENS THIS FRI, JULY 7 AT CONVERGENCE-CONTINUUM -Ohio premiere of Neighbors by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, directed by Terrence Spivey- In parts blackface minstrel show, family drama and tragic farce, NEIGHBORS takes racial rage head-on in our supposedly “post-racial” world with shocking, savage humor. This outrageously provocative and controversial play by MacArthur genius award winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is directed by Terrence Spivey (director of last year’s con-con production of Bootycandy). Classics professor Richard Patterson is not happy. The family of black entertainers that has moved in next door is an embarrassment—loud, raucous, tacky, shameless and obscene. They’re not just taking over the neighborhood—they’re infiltrating his perfect, interracial family and his perfect, post-racial sanity. In its scathing exploration of denial and its satire of black entertainment from blackface minstrelsy to hip-hop, NEIGHBORS is a shocking, explosive, hilarious and wildly theatrical play.
