ABOUT THE SHOW In 15th century Paris, Notre Dame Cathedral stands in the heart of the city, a fortress of self-proclaimed righteousness and moral authority. Its citizens move through the streets together but separate: soldiers, gypsies, priests and beggars. The rich and the poor. Predatory and proud. They will do anything to survive. Quasimodo, the hunchbacked son of the bishop's brother, rings the church bell and longs to live "out there". At the annual Feast of Fools, these worlds come together in a frenzy of drink and debauchery and elect Quasimodo the "King of Fools", igniting a cataclysmic descent into a street war of forbidden love, betrayal and religious hypocrisy. Hateful torches are raised. The gypsy and the fool are in a stand-off with all of Paris. There is sanctuary for no one as true goodness and evil are exposed and the fury reaches an apocalyptic boiling point. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the only stage collaboration from two masters of the American musical theatre, composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. This brand new production is high theatre, boldly told through stunning choral music and sublime orchestral power. Songs include "Out There", "Top of the World", and "God Help the Outcasts." Music By Alan Menken Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz Book by Peter Parnell CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS Quasimodo- The deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame and Claude Frollo's charge. Lonely and staunchly obedient to Frollo, he possesses a vivid imagination that brings to life the bells and gargoyles of the cathedral. Despite his shyness and uncertainty, he quickly befriends Esmeralda. Big-hearted, and brave when need be. Claude Frollo- Archdeacon of Notre Dame Cathedral and the most powerful cleric in Paris, he is the reluctant caretaker of Quasimodo. He will do whatever it takes to rid the city of the gypsy "vermin," even as he lusts after Esmeralda. Calculating, manipulative, and obsessive. Esmeralda- A beautiful and free-spirited gypsy who possesses the strong sense of justice and morality that Frollo lacks. Compassionate, she frees Quasimodo from the frenzied mob at the Feast of Fools and, against her better judgment, falls for the cocky Phoebus. Captain Phoebus de Martin- Returning to Paris after serving in the war, Phoebus takes up his new position as Captain of the Cathedral Guard. Overconfident yet charming, this handsome, strong soldier makes the ladies swoon, yet his moral compass is also strong, and he openly defies the corrupted Frollo. Clopin Trouillefou- The clever and charismatic King of the Gypsies. An air of mystery surrounds Clopin, who often leaves the scene in a puff of smoke. As the master of ceremonies for the Feast of Fools, he is witty and playful, but he boasts a darker, serious nature when not performing for the crowd. Jehan Frollo- Claude's reckless younger brother. With the gypsy Florika, he fathers Quasimodo, who he leaves in his brother's care. Wild, passionate, and strong-willed. Florika- A gypsy and Quasimodo's mother. The Ensemble- Gypsies, gargoyles, soldiers, and citizens of Paris.

The Producers Synopsis: Written by comedy master Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan (who wrote the book for Annie), The Producers is truly a "boffo" hit, winning a record twelve Tony Awards (including best musical) and wowing capacity crowds night after night on Broadway and on tour. Max Bialystock, the one-time king of Broadway producers, is hungry to strike it rich, and Leo Bloom, an accountant with dreams of someday becoming a theatre producer, discover that it could be more lucrative to produce a Broadway flop instead of a huge hit. They begin by combining a truly atrocious script with horrendous directors and talentless actors. However, when their new production, "Springtime for Hitler," turns out to be a smashing success, the plan is thrown off and the partners' lives are thrown into chaos. --------------------------------------- CSU Department of Theatre and Dance proudly presents EMOTIONAL CREATURE - THE SECRET LIFE OF GIRLS AROUND THE WORLD February 22 - March 4, 2018 Written by Eve Ensler (of "The Vagina Monologues") Directed by Holly Holsinger Cleveland State University's Department of Theatre and Dance, a Resident Company of Playhouse Square, will continue its Theatre season with the hard-hitting all-female play, *EMOTIONAL CREATURE - THE SECRET LIFE OF GIRLS AROUND THE WORLD (EC). Writer Eve Ensler (of "The Vagina Monologues") celebrates the authentic voice inside every girl and lets EC be a vehicle to empower young women and inspire activism. Running February 22 - March 4, 2018, EC is the "bold voice of a new generation" and is directed by CSU Associate Professor Holly Holsinger. The show has been called "empowering and entertaining" by New York Observer. *Parental guidance recommended. Ages 12 and up due to some sexual and violent content. THE STORY Through scenes, monologues, poetry, questions, and facts, the Tony Award-winning playwright brings to the stage an understanding of the universality of girls around the world: their resiliency, their wildness, their pain, their fears, their secrets, and their triumphs. Songs and games interweave everything from finding the perfect Facebook selfie to enjoying time with friends while having a Beyoncé dance party. These true stories told through the actors explore the questions of "who am I," "where do I belong" and "why did this happen to me?" The 90-minute play also delves into harder topics. Among the girls Ensler creates are an American who struggles with peer pressure in a suburban high school; an anorexic blogging as she eats less and less; a Masai girl from Kenya unwilling to endure female genital mutilation; a Congolese forced into sex slavery; a Chinese factory worker making Barbies; an Iranian student who is tricked into a nose job; a pregnant girl trying to decide if she should keep her baby, and a young South African teen defiantly calling for an end to rape. The play is engaging, moving from laughter to tears, and giving audience's one of the most powerful theatrical experiences of a lifetime. EC has played all over the world. Girls have shared that the show and the subjects resonated for them on a personal level, from rape to their sexuality, to racism and economic injustice. Boys have said that for them it was the first time they understood what their female peers were experiencing.
