Get Hep Swing presents - A holiday swing dance party with the 17-piece Skatch Anderssen Orchestra. An epic swing dance event to end the decade right! When? Saturday, December 28th, 2019 Where? The Lithuanian Club, 877 E. 185th Street, Cleveland, Ohio Dance lessons? Yes. Please join us for an all-levels jitterbug lesson from 8-9 with the Get Hep Swing instructors. Band? The Skatch Anderssen Orchestra plays all of your favorite big band swing dance tunes from 9-12. Who may attend? EVERYONE is welcome! Do I need to bring a dance partner? No, we rotate dance partners during the lesson. If you prefer not to rotate during the lesson, please help direct the other students past you each time we rotate. What do I wear? Most attendees will dress up for this special dance. Be impressive. Be confident. Be yourself. Wear what works for you and makes you feel good about yourself. Wear shoes that allow you to pivot and turn easily. Some people find this floor a little slow so, wearing your leather soles or slippery soled shoes might be perfect. What is the cost? $12 per person. No pre-event ticket sales. Pay cash at the door. We welcome anyone to join us who has an interest in dance, music, socializing and fun. We don't care what your physical ability or size is, where you are in life, where you are on the spectrum of sexual or gender orientation, what color or creed, or non-creed, you are. Are you a man who wants to learn how to follow or a woman who wants to learn how to lead? That's cool! This idea is not new to the swing dance scene. We are the easiest club to join. If you have an interest, you are in. :) We love spreading the gospel of swing dancing and we are excited to share the language and culture of this truly American, urban folk dance form with you. It is important for us to let you know that this dance style started in the African-American ballrooms of Harlem, New York in the late 1920s/early 1930s. You will find this dance, and the ones that came from it, incredibly expressive, empowering, beautiful, and joyful. We can't wait for you to experience this conversation of dance with us. Young Alice is rebellious, high-spirited, adventurous – looking to break out of small-town life and experience the world. She must be very strong singer and comfortable in folk and bluegrass styles. Gender-Female Age- 16-17, 36-37 (One actress plays both ages) Voice Part- Mezzo Billy Cane – A young soldier returning home from WWII; an aspiring young writer; fresh, open, optimistic, charming, and a little naïve. Gender- Male Age- 18-24 Voice Part-Tenor Daddy Cane – Billy’s father. A widower. Spry, good looking. Kind hearted, if a bit lonely. Gender- Male Age- 40-60 Voice Part- Baritone Margo Crawford – a small-town bookstore owner; a childhood friend of Billy’s who now harbors romantic feelings towards him; a natural beauty with a keen intellect. Gender- Female Age- 18-24 Voice Part- Mezzo Soprano Daryl Ames – An assistant at a literary magazine. Funny, with a dry and officious sense of humor. Insecure, and perhaps a bit socially awkward, but endearing and innately likeable. Character has slight flamboyant tendencies. Gender- Male Age-25-40 Voice Part- Baritone Lucy Grant – A junior editor at a literary magazine. An ambitious, professional young “modern” career woman of the 1940’s. Strong, forthright and provocative with a sharp sense of humor. Confident and assured of her own sexual prowess. Must be a strong dancer. Gender- Female Age-24-20 Voice Part-Mezzo Mama Murphy – Alice’s mother. A caretaker to her family and her rural community. A warm, loving, sensible woman. Hardworking, with great inner strength and compassion. Gender- Female Age-40-60 Voice Part- Alto Daddy Murphy – Alice’s father; an authoritative and a stern disciplinarian; devoutly religious, hard-working, a poor but proud farmer. Gender- Male Age-40-60 Voice Part-Baritone Mayor Josiah Dobbs – the Mayor of Zebulon; a political and financial powerbroker – distinguished, an imposing and controlling presence; has a genuine interest in protecting his son’s future and his family name, but in doing so, is ultimately pushed to a point of extreme and irrevocable cruelty. Gender- Male Age-40-60 Voice Part- Baritone Jimmy Ray Dobbs – In his early 20s in flashbacks is Mayor Dobbs’ son and young Alice’s beau; handsome, boyishly charming, well-built and intelligent; from a family of wealth and power and is being groomed by his father for a similar future in the family business; an independent thinker who is not afraid to stand up to his father for what he believes in; he has a sense of personal responsibility and morality as well as a deep reserve of passion and emotion. The same actor will also play an adult Jimmy Ray.. Gender- Male Age-18-20, 38-40 (One actor plays both ages) Voice Part-Tenor Ensemble- This is a very Active Ensemble, Looking for 10 performers (6 women, 4 males.)
