"Using storytelling to create an emotional connection with your monologue" Dr. Jaffe will be offering the fourth in his series of acting workshops on Shakespeare. Using storytelling and both physical and emotional recall, you will explore how to add a realistic and meaningful emotional element to a Shakespearian monologue. If you are currently working on a monologue, feel free to bring it (memorized or not). Some will also be provided. Come dressed for comfort and movement, wearing appropriate shoes. Any age welcome, high school and older. Location: the Royce Hall for Fine and Performing Arts (should be on your GPS)--on the campus of Lake Erie College in Painesville, Oh. Parking on Gillett Street. As an actor, he once toured with Japan's largest professional theatre company. His NZ production of THE SHAPE OF THINGS was cited as one of the best plays nationwide that year. Mumler unfolds. Mumler, a popular photographer in the post-Civil War era (when the country was mourning the loss of over 620,000 Americans,) built his reputation on his ability to capture images of departed loved ones in the pictures he took of the living who made their way to his studio. Mumler is aided by his mysterious wife and business is thriving...until they come under the scrutiny of Inspector Tooker who's determined to expose the couple as the charlatans he believes them to be. But when Tooker sees the photograph Mumler's taken of him, things get a bit more complicated for the inspector...and a whole lot more interesting for the audience. Western Reserve Playhouse auditions for “Heathers- The Musical” Written by Kevin Murphy & Laurence O’Keefe Directed by Kevin Kelly - Musical Direction by Adam Howard - Choreography by - Kristy Cruz - Stage Managed by - Shane Stahl SYNOPSIS: Based on the cult classic film of the same name, Heathers is the story of Veronica Sawyer, a senior at the fictional Westerberg High. Veronica longs to be cool like the clique of it-girls that runs Westerberg: the unaffected, unattainable Heathers. Unfortunately, in addition to awesome levels of popularity, the Heathers are also cruel, choosing to mock and bully their kingdom into submission. When Veronica uses her skills as a forger to get the Heathers out of detention, she impresses their leader Heather Chandler— so much so that they agree to let her into their exclusive club. At first, Veronica is thrilled—until she finds out that being one of the Heathers means bullying the same kids she used to call friends. Meanwhile, Veronica finds herself attracted to a mysterious newcomer at school named Jason Dean (JD). When an innocent drink mix-up results in the accidental poisoning of Heather Chandler, JD convinces Veronica to stage Heather’s suicide. The results are so successful that Veronica and JD, exhilarated with their newfound power, resolve to rid Westerberg of the cruelly popular elite forever. Must have dynamic and stylistic range. JD: M, 18-30 He is darkly charismatic, compelling, attractive, charming on the outside yet very damaged on the inside. Keen smarts and strong inventive comedy. Voice: strong, confident belt to at least an Ab, A preferable; wide emotional range. Heather Chandler: F, 18-30 Richest, hottest, most magnetic, cruelest girl in town. Relishes power and wields it like a scalpel - no fear, no patience, no mercy. Voice: strong belt to D, Eb preferred. Heather McNamara: F 18,-30 Beautiful, innocent, stupid, can be mean on command if Heather Chandler orders it, but actually quite vulnerable and fearful. Voice: strong belt to D, Eb preferred. Heather Duke: F, 18-30 Whipping-girl of the three Heathers. When she finally becomes Queen Bee she wields power like a bulldozer. Voice: strong belt to C, D preferred. Martha Dunstock: F, 18-30 Nicknamed “Martha Dumptruck,” the opposite of hot, confident, or popular. Beautiful soul, optimistic even in the face of rejection. Voice: strong belt to E or F, wide vocal expression. Ram Sweeney: M, 18-30 Linebacker. Big, insensitive to the feelings of others, ruled by appetites. Ram's Dad/Big Bud Dean: M, 30-50 Ram’s Dad is a former football player turned suburban dad who has never outgrown his glory days in high school. Big jolly personality that barely conceals the enormous rage bubbling just below the surface. Quite possibly a serial bomber. Voice: baritone/tenor, power country/gospel belt to Ab. Ms. Fleming/Veronica's Mom: F, 30-50 Ms. Fleming is an aging hippie teacher, still yearning for the day the Age of Aquarius reaches Ohio. Hungry for the spotlight, resentful of entitled youth. Actor also plays Veronica’s Mom, who is easygoing, distant, yet capable of laying down the law. Voice: great belt up to C Kurt's Dad/Veronica's Dad/Principal Gowan - 30-50 Kurt's Dad is straight-laced, very conservative, also former football player. A simple guy, not book smart, you'd be happy to share a beer with him. Also plays Veronicas Dad who is easy going and distant. Also plays Prinicipal Gowan who is rumpled, burned out, hates conflict. Voice: Strong Baritone/Tenor - power Country/Gospel Belt to G, the more the merrier. Male Student #1: Beleaguered Geek - 18+ An Embittered social outcast. Voice: Baritone/Tenor to F# or A. ABOUT THE PLAY: A Streetcar Named Desire, a play by Pulitzer Prize Winner Tennessee Williams, that reveals to the very depths the character of Blanche DuBois, a woman whose life has been undermined by her romantic illusions, which lead her to reject—so far as possible—the realities of life with which she is faced and which she consistently ignores. The pressure brought to bear upon her by her sister, with whom she goes to live in New Orleans, intensified by the earthy and extremely “normal” young husband of the latter, leads to a revelation of her tragic self-delusion and, in the end, to madness. One early Read-Through will be held on either Saturday, May 4 or 5 or Sunday, May 11 or 12. Casting may not be finalized until AFTER that Read-through. The Rehearsal Process will continue with a Company Meeting and Second Read-through from 1:00-6:00pm on Saturday, July 6 and another from 1:00-5:00pm on Sunday, July 7. Rehearsals (5 per week: Mon-Thurs eve and Sun afternoons) will commence on Tuesday, July 9. Performances (6): Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm, August 23-September 1 The Director strongly advises that actors read the play before attending the auditions. BRECKSVILLE THEATRE IS casting 6M and 6w (plus 3-5 minor characters). Principal Roles: * Blanche DuBois—Age Early-Late 30s (could be an older actress who can look younger—Jessica Lange and others who played her were in their 50s), about 5 years older than Stella: A flirtatious Southern Belle. While still beautiful by any objective standards, Blanche sees herself as a fading beauty. She is moving inexorably toward a tragic breakdown. She might be a manic-depressive. She has symptoms of neurasthenia, a somewhat vague psychological term for people who variously appear tired, distracted, and nervous. She is alternately self-confident and full of crippling self-doubt. Blanche is a compulsive liar, possibly what used to be called a nymphomaniac. We see most of the story through Blanche’s eyes. Blanche is onstage for the entire play, i.e. No Blanche=No Rehearsal. * Stella Dubois Kowalski—Blanche’s sister, about 5 years younger than Blanche: Glowing and attractive, ferociously in love with Stanley. While she comes from the same “Southern gentility” upbringing as Blanche, she has adapted well to her somewhat diminished world. She is pregnant with their first child. Like Blanche, Stella is a sexual person, but handles it so much better. * Stanley Kowalski—Age 20s-30s: Not a villain. He is a brutal, savage Alpha male. His first line in the play is, “Meat!” Stanley’s behavior is no more unnatural than a lion consuming a goat. He is always “himself”. His love for Stella is boundless and honest. (NOTE: Those auditioning for Stanley must be comfortable bare-chested. You may be asked to remove your shirt during the audition.) * Harold “Mitch” Mitchell—Age 30s, roughly the same age as Stanley: Served with Stanley in WWII, where they became friends. Less brutal and more sensitive than Stanley, Mitch aspires to marrying Blanche. Mitch is honestly devoted to his sick mother and more caring and kind than Stanley’s other friends.
