Wandering Aesthetics, Dunamis Theatre & The Spicy Lamb Farm present… The Jungle Book Theatre returns to Peninsula with performances of The Jungle Book in The Spicy Lamb Farm Barn this August. From 1953 to 1974, the Olde Player’s Barn on SR 303 brought theatre to life in Peninsula. Last year, Wandering Aesthetics brought theatre back to the village with a youth performance of A Play Within a Play on a Midsummer’s Day. This year, The Jungle Book is coming to life inside of The Spicy Lamb Farm’s Player’s Barn. Based on Rudyard Kipling’s book of the same name and devised by an extraordinary group of young performers, The Jungle Book takes a look at a number of issues facing modern-day students, from bullying to self expression. Following the story of Mowgli, the man-cub, the audience is transported from a school playground to the untamed jungle where the likes of Baloo, Bagheera, Akeela and Shere Khan, help teach Mowgli the “rules of the jungle”. SYNOPSIS: Based on the 80’s dark comedy cult classic film of the same name, Heathers is the story of Veronica Sawyer, a senior at the fictional Westerberg High. Veronica longs to be cool like the clique of it-girls that runs Westerberg: the unaffected, unattainable Heathers. Unfortunately, in addition to awesome levels of popularity, the Heathers are also cruel, choosing to mock and bully their kingdom into submission. When Veronica uses her skills as a forger to get the Heathers out of detention, she impresses their leader Heather Chandler— so much so that they agree to let her into their exclusive club. At first, Veronica is thrilled—until she finds out that being one of the Heathers means bullying the same kids she used to call friends. Meanwhile, Veronica finds herself attracted to a mysterious newcomer at school named Jason Dean (JD). When an innocent drink mix-up results in the accidental poisoning of Heather Chandler, JD convinces Veronica to stage Heather’s suicide. Get Hep Swing presents - A swing dance party with Moustache Yourself. When? Friday, August 9th from 8pm - 12am Where? The Lakewood Masonic Temple, 15300 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood, Ohio 44107 Dance lessons? Yes. Join us for a jitterbug lesson that is appropriate for dancers of all levels from 8-9 with Get Hep Swing owner and swing dance champion, Valerie Salstrom. You do not need to bring a dance partner for the lessons or the dance. We rotate partners during the lesson. If you prefer not to rotate dance partners, we are okay with that too. Band? Moustache Yourself will entertain you with all of your favorite swing dance tunes played in a Jazz Manouche style from 9-12. Moustache Yourself plays in a jazz/swing style that was made popular in France in the 1930s. Hot club jazz, or by the French name, "jazz manouche” is a style of jazz music made famous by guitarist Django Reinhardt. Reinhardt was heavily influenced by ragtime and Dixieland music and found special inspiration from Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. Hot club swing standards include jazz hits of the '20s and '30s, original compositions by Django Reinhardt, such as "Nuages" and "Minor Swing"; compositions by other notable musicians of this style; and jazzed-up versions of manouche songs, such as "Dark Eyes." Much of the repertoire is in minor keys, lending a distinctively dark sound to the tunes which contrast with the lively performance style. It's infectious rhythm and exotic but familiar melodies will capture your soul and transport you to a different time and place.
