Opportunity for Artists - working with Kids in Akron Elementary Schools

Good afternoon! I am posting the following to this community, hoping to find artists available and interested in volunteering one afternoon each week to helping kids in the Akron area to be successful in school, and in life. This YMCA after school program has been in place since 2015 (in various forms), but has not had a solid arts component. It would be so wonderful for the kids if we had Mentors who could bring some artistic lessons or activities to the program. For example: Playing the guitar or keyboard and adding a music lesson - teaching a song or teaching about the instruments; Helping the kids with unique and fun physical activities incorporating dance and music; Exposing the kids to new art mediums and projects; Improv and acting exercises, etc. The Mentors in the program volunteer one day each week from about 2:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.(Mon. - Thurs.) for 10 weeks. There are a number of sites in Akron where we still need volunteers for spring sessions beginning Jan. 27th or Feb. 4th. The Akron Area YMCA provides all materials, supplies and training (if needed) to our Mentors, and will provide structured lessons if that if preferred. Volunteering as a Mentor is a wonderful opportunity to enrich the lives of children living in our community through a development based curriculum including nutrition, reading, physical health, creative activities and games. Mentors are provided with all materials, supplies and training needed to create fun, positive, life-changing experiences for students. Mentors volunteer approximately 3 hours of their time each week at an Akron Area YMCA After School site. This rewarding opportunity is open to those in high school and beyond. The ideal Mentor is reliable, organized, punctual, and has a great passion for helping children succeed in school and in life. In addition, there are a number of career-oriented internships available for college students with the Youth Development Program. Set in a Paris apartment, *BOEING BOEING* by Marc Camoletti, Beverley Cross, and Francis Evans tells the story of Bernard, a playboy architect with a fondness for becoming engaged to stewardesses - one Italian, one German and one American. When weather and speedier jets conspire, the lothario faces catastrophe as all three fiancées land simultaneously. Mixups, confusion, merry misadventures and mistaken identities keep the laughs coming in this 2008 winner of the Tony for Best Revival of a Play. *Paula Kline-Messner* returns to the ACT stage to direct *Rob Albrecht *as Bernard; *Claudia Lillibridge*, his exhausted, exasperated housekeeper, Berthe; and *Chris Bizub*, Bernard’s visiting friend from Wisconsin, Robert. The Olde Towne Hall Theatre proudly presents Guys and Dolls, Jr. performed by the award winning Youth Theater. They have preparing for months to travel to the Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta, GA to be adjudicated. Show dates include: Friday January 10, 2020 at 7:30pm Saturday January 11, 2020 at 7:30pm The show will be performed in it’s entirety followed by the excerpt that will be adjudicated next weekend at the festival. The performers do not use props, costumes or set pieces. They will transform you into New York City through their acting, singing and dancing! Donations will be accepted in lieu of tickets and it’s general seating so seats are first come, first served. CONVERGENCE-CONTINUUM PRESENTS THE 2020 NEOMFA PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL FEBRUARY 13 - 22 (CLEVELAND, OHIO – JANUARY 2019). For the ninth year, convergence-continuum continues its successful collaboration with the Northeast Ohio Master of Fine Arts (NEOMFA ) in Creative Writing Program. The Festival runs two weekends, Thursday-Saturday at 8 pm, with different plays each weekend. Week 1 features the full-length play _A SHAPE TO THIS ACHE_ by MFA candidate Morgan Elswick, directed by Jonah Roth, featuring actors Joan Janknowski, Joseph Milan, Claire Scott, and Kim Woodworth. Week 2 features the one-act play _THE PURPLE QUEEN_ by Ralph Myers, directed by Tyson Douglas Rand, and two ten-minute plays: _FIRST TO DIE WINS_ by Justin Lazor, directed by Eva Nel Brettrager and _AUTOPOIESIS_ by Oana Leuce, directed by David Munnell. The Week 2 plays feature the following cast members in various roles: J.C. Cifranic, Samantha Cocco, Jamal Davidson, Mike Frye, Robert Lucchesi, Casey McCann, Grace Mitri, J.P. Peralta, Hanna Storch, Tim Tavcar and Monica Zach. _The 2020 NEOMFA Playwrights Festival _opens Thursday, Feb. 13 and runs at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Feb. 22 at the Liminis Theater, 2438 Scranton Rd., Cleveland, OH 44113 in the historic Tremont neighborhood.
