The Dark Room is an ongoing event held on the second Tuesday of each month. The Dark Room affords emerging and veteran playwrights the space and resources to develop new works. Performances: July 15th-30th (Fridays and Saturdays at 8:15pm and Sundays at 2:15pm) ROLES AVAILABLE: Rafiki - A wise mandrill who acts as healer of the Pridelands and guides Simba on his journey home. She is an omniscient character, evincing an air of mystery. Mufasa - The strong, honorable, and wise lion who leads the Pridelands. Sarabi - A featured lioness, Mufasa's mate, and Simba's mother. Zazu - The anxious yet loyal assistant to Mufasa who is always busy trying to do his duty. Scar - The antagonist of the show, overcome with jealousy of his brother, Mufasa, and nephew, Simba. Coldhearted and wickedly intelligent, he will stop at nothing to become king of the Pridelands. Young Simba - The protagonist of the story, is an adventurous and endearing cub who can't wait to be king of the Pridelands. Simba is playful, energetic, and naive, but after his father Mufasa's death, Simba struggles with shame and his destiny. Simba - Grows from a cub to lion in "Hakuna Matata." Older Simba has more complex moments as he reunites with Nala, mourns his father, and returns to confront Scar Young Nala - A courageous lion and Young Simba's best friend. She is not afraid to speak her mind. Nala - Grows from a cub to a lioness before she confronts Scar Sarafina - A featured lioness and Nala's mother. Shenzi - One of Scar's hyenas who plot to take over the Pridelands. She is the sassy one of the trio and is always looking out for herself. Banzai - A slick yet childish hyena who works for Scar. He would be the leader of the group if hyenas weren't so lazy. Ed - The third member of Scar's trio of lackeys. He has a loud, cackling laugh that is his only form of communication. Timon - An outcast meerkat who lives in the jungle with Pumbaa. He is afraid of his own shadow, but pretends to be the confident, relaxed leader of the duo. *Audition Notice: * *JACOB MARLEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL* by Tom Mula Directed by Jonathan Wilhelm *Auditions: *Monday, August 7 and Wednesday, August 9, 2023 from 7-8:30 pm *Show Dates:* November 3 - December 3, 2023 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm *(no show on Thanksgiving, Nov. 23)* *Story: *The flip-side of Charles Dickens' holiday classic as told through the journey of Ebenezer Scrooge's deceased business partner, Jacob Marley. The script is written in the style of Story Theater, where actors take multiple roles, alternate between narration and dialogue, break the fourth wall and incorporate pantomime. Story Theater makes inventive use of props and costume pieces with the actors creating the sound effects. *Characters: *The script calls for four performers. Auditions are open to performers of all races, ethnicities and gender identification. Those auditioning are encouraged, but not required, to bring any musical instruments they may play and perform 16 bars of any Christmas or holiday song. Auditioners are also encouraged to display any additional talents they may have, i.e. juggling, acrobatics, circus skills, dialects, etc. These are not requirements. Dan Popp's Voice Acting Fundamentals Class is Back! September 9 - October 14 Cost: $750 plus tax People say that you have a nice voice. You've always thought about getting into voice acting. Some nice folks on the internet told you it was easy, and you could make lots of money doing it. In your pajamas. So you bought a USB mic. And some pajamas. Now, what? Well, how about getting trained? 35-year voice acting veteran & coach Dan Popp is hosting the Fall, 2023, Voice Acting Fundamentals class. There will be six, 2-hour sessions at Colors Audio <https://www.colorsaudio.com/>, one of the area's premier commercial studios. Some of the Fundamentals include: What voice acting is not (probably what you're doing now: mimicking). What it is, and why it is in some ways more difficult than visual acting. How to truly react, or hear and respond, when there is no one to react to. Why obsessing over "which word to emphasize" (what I call the "paint-by-numbers" approach) will never achieve a natural read. The term "Copy Analysis" sounds clinical and boring, but it basically means "understanding what you're saying." (A word about that: If there's no need for understanding or connecting emotionally to the script, AI has already replaced you.) How to quickly discover the writer's intent and put yourself into a situation of conflict - which is the essence of drama - which is why you're acting, not reading. How to dig deeper and make stronger choices. "And more!" In this business you'll be auditioning against hundreds of others who (for the most part) won't put in the effort to become the person who must say these words.
