Comedies are a favorite with them, but certainly dramas, musicals and children’s shows are also welcome as submissions. We strive to put together a balanced season based on choices sent to us by directors. We do it this way because we feel that it is important that directors have a vision for and passion about productions that they tackle. If in case you need a gentle nudge, we have provided a list of plays that the play reading committee has liked, but passed on, previously. YOU NEED NOT CHOOSE FROM THIS LIST, but perhaps it will spark ideas for you. ** Do your best to submit in a variety of genres,. * For instance, due to the cost of production, Workshop Players would do no more than one musical in a season. Therefore if submitting musicals also include some straight plays to increase your chance of being chosen to direct. Solon Center for the Arts is accepting applications for a part-time Instructor to fill the position of Musical Director for upcoming musical theater productions. Instructors lead and act as a role model to a group of participants in a specific area of the performing/fine arts. Instructors develop, implement and engage participants in classes, lessons, workshops, performances, pop-up events, etc. in their specific field/specialty. Primary tasks and responsibilities for this position include: • Attend auditions and collaborate on casting with the show director and choreographer. • Attend creative team meetings with Director and Choreographer to develop the overall vision of the show. • Plan, prepare and attend rehearsals. Adhere to a teaching schedule set by the director or Theater Coordinator. • Lead vocal warm ups and exercises, as well as teach music to the cast. • Accompany cast on piano during first half of rehearsals, as sound tracks will be used for the second half of rehearsals and for performances (no conducting, no musicians) • Instruct and manage a group of approximately 8 – 25 students. This position is for approximately 2 - 4 hours per week with additional hours for tech week and performances. • Fall/Winter Production Rehearsals o Wednesday Evenings and/or Saturday Mornings • Winter/Spring Production Rehearsals o Tuesday Evenings and/or Thursday Evenings • Additional hours required for tech week and performances of Main Stage Shows • Summer Camp hours for Musical Theater Camp may be included in June & July Qualified applicants must have two years of teaching experience as a Musical Director (Theater) or Choir Director. Bachelor’s degree in Music, Theater or Music Education from an accredited institution preferred. Candidates for this position will work closely with the Theater Department Coordinator and must be able to work with students of all ages and skill levels, with a specific focus on youth grades 4 – 8. Applicants must be professional and display leadership qualities in and out of the classroom and may be the lead instructor during rehearsals. In addition, the applicant should possess excellent problem solving, organizational and interpersonal skills. Applicants must be able to work in a team environment. This position is slotted as a P3 on Solon’s part-time wage scale which offers a starting range from $17.00/hour. Compensation will be determined based upon previous education, performance, and teaching experience. Bassist available for hire for sub work or playing a full run, if the schedule allows. I have plenty of experience dropping in and sight-reading shows on either electric or upright bass. I'm in the Akron area and my work schedule will probably limit the distance that I can travel. I have TONS of pit experience ranging from high school musicals to the Pittsburgh Opera and Ballet, and I miss it.

SOKOL GREATER CLEVELAND VCELKY THEATRE GROUP Announces Sokol Greater Cleveland’s theatre group Vcelky will be holding auditions for its September 8, 2024 performance of Karel Čapek’s play Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti, or Rossum’s Universal Robots. The play will be performed in English (phew!) and as a radio play. Additional performance dates may be added. Auditions will be held on Saturday July 6 at 11 a.m. and Thursday July 11 at 7 pm in the Bohemian National Hall Ballroom (4939 Broadway Avenue, Cleveland) Rehearsals will begin shortly after casting, and will likely be held two days per week, and other days as determined by the directors Georgia Maresh and Rob Samec, and producer Kelli Perk. The play is a 1920’s science fiction play by the Czech writer Karel Čapek which introduced the word "robot" to the English language and to science fiction as a whole. Set in a robot factory on an island at some unspecified time in the future, Helena, a beautiful young woman and daughter of the president of an unnamed world power, visits the island on behalf of the Humanity League. Her mission is to liberate the robots, which are artificial humans that look and act like humans, but are treated as mere machines or property. The robots eventually revolt, wiping out humanity. . .or did they? The play touches on themes such as slavery, what makes humans human, love, compassion, greed and the consequences of runaway technology. Relevant today considering the debates over AI and Super AI . We are going to be performing the play as a “radio play” in the 1940’s. The set will be a radio studio. The actors, dressed in 1940’s garb, will read their parts into microphones on the stage. (Acting required, but very little memorizing) Other members of the cast will be seen on stage doing sound effects such as gunshots, explosions, telephone ringing, door knocking, etc. We will do a few radio commercials between acts. Actors are needed to play the following roles: 1. Radio announcer 2. Narrator 3. Harry Domin, General Manager 4. Fabry, Chief Engineer 5. Dr. Gall, Head of the Psychological Department 6. Dr. Hallemeier, Psychologist-in-Chief 7. Busman, Business Manager 8. Alquist, Chief of Building Operations 9. Helena Glory, President of Humanity League, daughter of President Glory 10.Nana, Helena’s maid 11. Sulla, a robotess 12. Marius, a robot 13. Radius, a robot 14. Helena, a robotess 15.
