The citizens of the Black and White City have forgotten the Colorful Mountain, once their landmark and prized jewel with otherworldly powers. As the wealthy White family seeks a cure for their sick father, a colorful woman from the Mountain, named Star, roams the city to unlock a mysterious dream. Can a black and white land rediscover the beauty and richness of colors? Even time can’t touch French Creek’s ‘Tuck Everlasting’ By Gwendolyn Kochur, Guest Critic Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal I used to have a crush on Jesse Tuck, the immortal boy in the novel “Tuck Everlasting.” Not only that, but I loved the book so much that I wanted to be Winnie, the young protagonist from the story who longed for adventure and to see the world. But then you grow up, read bigger books and it isn’t until you become a theater critic and are asked to review “Tuck Everlasting” that your love for Natalie Babbitt’s 1975 book is reawakened. French Creek Theatre’s production of “Tuck Everlasting” proves that a good story told with a lot of heart can relate to audiences of all ages and withstand the test of time. Evergreen musical ‘The Music Man’ gets a proper staging at Porthouse Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Is there a better time than now to escape to Meredith Willson’s musical comedy safe-haven of River City, Iowa in 1912? And is there a better place to do it than at the Porthouse amphitheater, summer home of the Equity actor-enhanced productions of Kent State University’s musical theater program? This is just the kind of time-honored classic that is squarely in the wheelhouse of director Terri Kent, choreographer John Crawford-Spinelli and music director Jonathan Swoboda, who opt for sincerity in their depiction of these people and their world rather than the satire often attempted by too many others. EVENT: Results of the Dover Players 10 Minute Play Competition! July 19-21 featured the performances of a variety of twelve 10 minute plays that were the finalists from over 65 international plays submitted to Dover Players. Six plays were performed on Fri., July 19 and six plays were performed on Sat., July 20. The top 3 plays from Fri. and the top 3 plays from Sat. evening performances, as voted by the audience, competed on Sun., July 21. These 6 plays were critiqued by 3 judges not affiliated with Dover Players or the playwrights. Award certificates were presented to Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Costumes, and Best Creative Writing - the playwright award. The playwright award included a framed certificate, monetary gift and a picture of the Dover Players director and cast who performed the winning play. EDDIE AND EDNA (directed by Greg Lavelle) Sometimes it becomes a struggle to sort out the real from the imagined. Sometimes, even those closest cannot help. LOVESICK (directed by Tim Peebles) At the Institute, some time in the not too distant future, Tom and Marybeth find that love among coworkers does not always work out. SUPER INTERVIEW (directed by Lisa Carter) Mr. Melvin interviews Mrs. Smith for an important position in his company, but it seems that Smith's super qualifications might not be enough to win the job. A BOX OF ASHES (directed by Adam Leventhal) A man and a woman seek the help of a psychic to discover the reason a spirit seems to be present in the woman's house and, in the process, discover a surprising revelation. This rehearsal process will be conventional in nature and based in character development, song, and basic dance. There may be some scene creation during the rehearsal process. Rehearsals are 5-6 times a week, with evening weekday rehearsals and some daytime weekend rehearsals. Performances begin with a preview on November 21st and opening on November 22nd. FINAL WEEKEND! CONVERGENCE-CONTINUUM PRESENTS THE OHIO PREMIERE OF TOM AT THE FARM a psycho-sexual thriller by Michel Marc Bouchard, translated by Linda Gaboriau “Tom at the Farm ... unfolds with blurred boundaries between lust and brutality, truth and fiction. It blends psychological-thriller elements as it moves toward an unsettling plunge into a nightmare of fear, intolerance and fantasy.” (Roy Berko, _Cleveland Theatre Reviews_) Following the accidental death of his lover, junior ad exec Tom travels from the city to a remote farm in the country for the funeral. There he finds a religious family who knows nothing of his existence, and is blindsided by his dead boyfriend’s legacy of lies. The mother is expecting a girlfriend, while his late boyfriend’s brother is obsessed with preserving a facade of “normalcy,” which causes some awkwardly funny moments when Tom’s gal-pal shows up. However, the brother’s perverse obsession also brings him to drag Tom into a twisted and brutal sexually-charged game to strong-arm Tom into joining in on the lies, until Tom finally confronts the torment that drove his lover to live in the shadows of deceit.
