Petitt Memorial Music Scholarship. This year's competition will be held on Sunday, November 4, 2018, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Room 113 at The Cleveland Institute of Music, 11021 East Boulevard, Cleveland, Ohio 44106. The scholarship is designed to give recognition and encouragement to musically gifted teens through the opportunity to perform on stage with the Cleveland POPS Orchestra and receive a cash award to be applied to their continuing studies. Entry is open to all youth up to age 18 residing and attending high school in the seven-county Greater Cleveland region. Contestants can be singers, dancers or instrumentalists. They must be prepared to perform a full-length musical selection from memory. Choice of selection may be drawn from standard popular music repertoire, including songs, dances or instrumental solos found in Broadway musicals, big band arrangements, jazz or light classics. The grand prize winner of the competition will perform with the Cleveland POPS Orchestra at one of their regularly scheduled concerts at Severance Hall or PlayhouseSquare. Tri-C Students Reclaim Playhouse Square SpotlightCollege production of ‘A View From the Bridge’ set for Nov. 1-3 at Ohio Theatre Theater students from Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) will present A View From the Bridge as they take the stage at the Ohio Theatre at Playhouse Square. Performances will take place Nov. 1-3 at the historic downtown theater. Students from multiple Tri-C campuses will perform and work behind the scenes to present the play on one of the nation’s grandest stages. A View From the Bridge begins at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Tickets are $20 ($5 for students/Tri-C students free with ID) and can be purchased at www.playhousesquare.org or by calling 216-241-6000. The Ohio Theatre is located at 1511 Euclid Ave. This is the third year students from the College have staged a production at Playhouse Square. A View From the Bridge by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Arthur Miller tells the tale of a Brooklyn longshoreman named Eddie Carbone, whose obsessive affection for his niece leads to a clash with two illegal immigrants taking refuge in his home. Miller’s classic tragedy premiered in 1955. It has since enjoyed consistent revivals on Broadway in addition to adaptations for film, television and even opera. The play will also be presented at Tri-C’s Simon and Rose Mandel Theatre at the Eastern Campus, with preview performances scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 25-27 and 10:30 a.m. Oct. 25. Admission is free. This FRIDAY, Oct 26: Seeking Actors for Student Produced Films and Videos! - AUDITIONING FOR: a LEAD ROLE in student-produced films and videos, made by Cuyahoga Community College's beginner level film students (an "Intro to Filmmaking" class, taught by Prof. Bruno Tatalovic). Several students who completed this course in previous years – are now proud graduates of Tri-C, and newly established Cleveland film artists, videographers, and crew members on big union films shot in Ohio! :) - WHEN: Friday, October 26, show up anytime between 9:15am and 12:30pm. - WHERE: Tri-C Campus in Parma, 11000 W Pleasant Valley Rd, (park in "visitor"; walk to central campus area); If lost, ask police officers in hallways to show you G107 room. - WHO SHOULD COME: This type of collaboration is perfect for beginner (or intermediate) level actors who need more footage for their first demo-reel. By having a Demo Reel, you will be able to seek industry representation (agent). - ABOUT PROJECTS: each of these projects feature 1-2 actors only, and gives you a lot of screen time and dialogue or monologue lines. These are unpaid (collaboration) gigs. Get your first credit, your demo footage, and establish new relationships with like-minded content creators. GroundWorks' 2018 Fall Series features the world premiere of a dynamic new project created in partnership with the Akron Art Museum and funded by a Knight Foundation Arts Challenge award. The Knight Arts Challenge funds the best ideas for engaging and enriching communities through the arts. Shimotakahara was given permission to work in response to an important piece from the museum's permanent collection, the magnificent Dzesi II by internationally-renowned artist El Anatsui. Initially part of the Akron Art Museum's 2012 exhibition, "Gravity and Grace," Dzesi II has become one of the most popular works in its collection. "The celebrated work of El Anatsui strikes a rare combination of stunning beauty, fascinating communal process and deep metaphorical and poetic meaning," curator Ellen Rudolph writes. "A global artist, Anatsui draws on artistic and aesthetic traditions from his birth country of Ghana, his home in Nsukka, Nigeria, and various Western art forms. Anatsui's work is about transformation. Using found materials such as printing plates, condensed milk tins and aluminum liquor bottle caps allows the artist full freedom to improvise and invent. Anatsui is also captivated by the history of use that such materials retain." In addition to bringing this premiere to the Allen Theatre, GroundWorks performances will also feature the reprise of two audience favorites from GroundWorks' extensive repertory, LUNA and Hindsight. Hindsight, Guest Artist Lynne Taylor-Corbett's homage to Chrissie Hynde and first staged by GroundWorks in 2011, explores the sounds and rhythms of legendary English-American rock band The Pretenders. LUNA, choreographed by Shimotakahara in 2012, explores the nature of desire and its deeply held and often conflicting motivations. "These polarities developed into a series of physical relationships that reveal many facets in a cycle of experience," Shimotakahara says of LUNA. "That cycle is like the moon, as unknown and primal as it is familiar." As a girl, Violet was struck by a wayward axe blade when her father was chopping wood, leaving her with a visible scar across her face. With enough money finally saved she's traveling across the Deep South in 1964 towards a miracle - the healing touch of a TV evangelist who will make her beautiful. Although she may not succeed in having the scar on her face healed, Violet is able to repair those scars that are lying deeper than her skin. The show is directed by CSU Associate Professor Holly Holsinger, with music direction by Maria DiDonato. Music is by Jeanine Tesori, with lyrics and book by Brian Crawley. VIOLET is based on "The Ugliest Pilgrim" by Doris Betts. "It's a story about the fact that everyone has wounds, and that we're all searching for healing. We all do that in our own way. I hope people gain compassion from the show, but more importantly I hope people see themselves on their own journey," says Holsinger about the production. She also describes the cast as having some wonderful group numbers, which have intriguing and powerful harmonies. "The cast is drawing me in, making me want to rise up out of my seat!"
