February 28, 2018 Dear Directors, Workshop Players Theater in Amherst, OH is the longest running theater-in-the-round in the state of Ohio. Founded by Valerie Jenkins Gerstenberger in 1948 we are currently celebrating our 70th season. Imagine that! The faces have changed. The facility has been updated, but the plays go on! We are excited to invite you to be part of it all by submitting to direct in our 2019-2020 season, which will be our 72nd. We have a potential list of plays to choose from, but your choices definitely need not be limited to these. We are particularly interested in plays with *NAME RECOGNITION.* Please note, that even though there are on our list, we have not worked through HOW to produce them in our unique space. As always, that is the director’s job, so we leave the mechanics of it all to you. Whatever plays you do choose ask yourself if they could successfully be performed in the round? Would they work with our limited amount of backstage space? Would the content of the play be appealing? Beyond our list, we are especially interested in *FAMILY FRIENDLY SHOWS, AND SHOWS SPECIFICALLY AIMED AT CHILDREN* (not necessarily including children in the cast—-could be adults performing a show that would bring children into the theater). We welcome musicals, potentially Christmas offerings, more modern shows (though those with a lot of foul language may not work for our audiences). *If you have already directed at Workshop Players, you need not submit a resume or application, merely your list of play submissions that include and overview of the play and WHY and HOW you believe each would fit into our space. Each applicant should submit a list of no fewer than 3 and no more than 6 plays. * *If you have not directed with us, please submit a resume along with your submissions. The play reading committee will then read all of the plays submitted and meet with each director in August to finalize a balanced, interesting season. Media Release *For Immediate Release* Contact: Mary Verdi-Fletcher President/Founding Artistic Director 216-432-0306 vfletcher1(a)aol.com *Dancing Wheels Brings Back Disney Classic in Pinocchio!* Cleveland - March 2018 - The Dancing Wheels Company, America’s first physically integrated dance company uniting the talents of dancers with and without disabilities, continues its 37th anniversary season with the return of the classic children’s story, *Pinocchio!* The production will open at the Breen Center for the Performing Arts at St. Ignatius High School (2008 W. 30th St., Cleveland, OH 44113) with student matinee performances on Thursday and Friday, April 12th and 13th at 10:30 a.m. each day. On Sunday, April 15 at 2:00 p.m., the production is open to the public and includes a Family Fun Party. Ticket prices include a post-performance carnival for children complete with games, prizes, and goodies galore! *About the Production* This beloved story, created by Carlo Collodi (Lorenzini), won the hearts of children throughout Europe in 1883, and later through the genius of Disney, was popularized throughout the United States in a 1940s animated feature film. For Dancing Wheels’ version of the classic tale, former Cleveland Ballet dancer and now Broadway choreographer Ginger Thatcher portrays the story of *Pinocchio!* based off of the original story -- but with a new twist. Choreographed to the spritely music of Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Pinocchio’s mischievous escapades take him on new adventures with unique characters such as tap-dancing donkeys and discombobulated, but determined, doctors. Of course, some of the old favorites like Jiminy Cricket, Geppetto, and the Azure Fairy still remain as central figures. A 12-member cast from the Dancing Wheels Company will play a host of witty characters throughout the production, including the following lead roles: *Pinocchio portrayed by Matthew Robinson*, *Caleb Waybright as Geppetto*, *Mary Verdi-Fletcher as The Azure Fairy* and *Jake Washabaugh as Jiminy Cricket*. Sunday’s performance only, students with and without disabilities from our School and outreach programs will join the Company for a special kids’ section in the performance. “This revival of Pinocchio! will surely be an event that will bring generations together as this classic tale is told in an inventive, and new way. Lit Cleveland is excited to announce the program for its upcoming staged reading at Cleveland State University's Student Center Ballroom during this year's Cleveland Humanities Festival on Saturday March 17th and Sunday March 18th at 7 pm. A reception with the actors and writers will follow each performance. 250 people attended the performances last year, so please: Take a minute to register in advance: http://www.litcleveland.org/cleveland-humanities-festival-staged-reading.htm l The hour-long performance, directed by Dale Heinen, is titled I Will Sing for You: Writers on Health, features original work by Northeast Ohio writers Nicholas Cohen, Diane Ferri, Aubrey Hirsch, Ray McNiece, Darlene Montonaro, Robin Pease, Mimi Plevin-Foust, Susan Rakow, Jane Richmond, Elaine Schleiffer, Karen Schubert, Jill Sell, Mary Weems, and Joe Kapitan. The cast is Davis Aguila, Andrea Belser, David Bugher, Anne McEvoy, and Kimberly Sias. Lit Cleveland's call for submissions earlier this year garnered over 180 poems, stories, and plays from writers throughout Northeast Ohio. The moving, often funny works explore issues such as aging, cancer, addiction, mental health, race and poverty, and the inequities in our current health care system. Diane Ferri's moving essay "I Will Sing for You" recounts her final memories of time spent with her aging mother. Philip Metres reflects on finding peace in the midst of a painful concussion as well as the current presidential administration in his essay "Refuge." Playwright Mary Weems encounters the tragedy of addiction in her piece "Pill/Box." Ray McNiece playfully taunts death in his poem "The Bone Orchard Conga," while Joe Kaptian humorously highlights the hypocrisy of health care coverage in his one act play "Minimal Coverage." "Reading the selected pieces, it's striking how relevant, and often how American, these stories are," said director Dale Heinen. "It's a fun, intriguing challenge to craft performances from diverse forms of writing like poetry and essay, and I look forward to sharing our discoveries with festival audiences." His bad luck reaches its peak when he is sent to a juvenile detention camp - all for a crime he did not commit! Stanley and the boys are forced to dig large holes in the dirt every day. Hole by hole, day after day, Stanley and his friend Zero dig their destiny. Richard Morris, Jr., the director of Holes, says of the story: "I was first introduced to Holes when my nieces begged me to rent the movie. Since then, I have been captivated by the story. The boys living at Camp Green Lake have all lived hard-luck lives. Each carries the scars of a world that far-too-often forces kids to confront the harsh realities of homelessness, poverty, abuse, absent authority figures, and illiteracy. The Fine Arts Association announces auditions for: The Fine Arts Association's production of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" Directed & choreographed by Lisa-Marie French About the Show: Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the film's Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Menken and Schwartz. Peter Parnell's book embraces story theatre and features verbatim passages from Hugo's gothic novel. The musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be "Out There," observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn't the only one captivated by her free spirit, though - the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies - and it's up to Quasimodo to save them all.
