*Script Analysis: The Heart of the Form* Meets: Tuesdays, 7:00pm-8:30pm Oct. 17 through Dec. 19th (8 classes over 10 weeks - no class Oct. 31st or Nov. 21st) Instructor: Tyler Whidden, Associate Artistic Director An exploration of the structure, plot designs, and execution of a series of classic and contemporary plays; some that follow basic structure and some that try to play with the form. This weekly discussion group will read a play a week and discuss how the playwright’s use of basic tools of playwriting (theme, dialogue, plot, character, etc.) and structure work to tell the play’s story and, more importantly, how those techniques can translate to other disciplines within theater. Perfect for playwrights, directors, actors, designers, and audience members. *Tyler Whidden earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College and his MFA in Playwriting from Ohio University. His plays include *Occupation: Dad, Run Kingsbury Run, Dancing With N.E.D*.*, *and he has been teaching playwriting at College of Wooster, Ohio University, and Southern New Hampshire University for several years. * *Directing Fundamentals with “The Hairy Ape” by Eugene O’Neill* Meets: Saturdays, 10:00am-12:00pm Oct. 14th through Nov. 11th (Scripts provided) Instructor: Ian Wolfgang Hinz, Director of “The Hairy Ape” This 5 week class is for directors of all levels to dive into the process of getting a play into rehearsal and on its feet. You will focus on the upcoming production of “The Hairy Ape” as a class, breaking down the text to define your individual vision for the piece. Once this is articulated, you will refine your vision through exercises in design, casting, and other pre-work. Each director will then work on techniques for communicating their vision throughout the rehearsal process and tech to opening night! Each class will mirror the process of Ensemble’s production of “The Hairy Ape” culminating in tech weekend and including 2 free tickets to opening night November 17th at 8pm. *Ian Hinz has been directing with Ensemble since 2008, including *Sexual Perversity in Chicago, Waiting for Lefty, Jerusalem, *and O'Neill's* Iceman Cometh *which won him the Cleveland Critic's Circle Award for Best Direction. * *Auditioning Technique and Practice* Meets: Saturdays, 12:00pm-2:00pm Oct. 14th through Nov. 11th (5 classes) Instructor: Celeste Cosentino, Artistic Director This class will explore successful techniques for auditioning and getting cast using a variety of disciplines to further develop and sharpen acting instincts. Participants will work on monologues for general auditions and will read pre-chosen sides with readers to complement their work. Students can bring in existing pieces they want to improve upon or we can start from scratch. Gain confidence with this exploration of best practices to hone your auditioning skills. The class will culminate with a presentation in front of a panel of local Cleveland directors. Independent outside work is a required component of this class. *Celeste Cosentino has been the Executive Artistic Director of Ensemble since 2009, and she has directed several plays since then. The Contemporary Youth Orchestra is holding AUDITIONS for our spring event *A Tour of Love.* CYO Music Director Liza Grossman and local theater professional Jordan Cooper are putting together an Evening of Broadway Magic - centered around love songs. Everything from golden age classics to modern hits We are seeking 4 men and 4 women to sing a myriad of show tune styles. Strong acting and vocal chops are a must! We are also seeking high school singers/actors to fill the role of an ensemble. Competitive stipends are available for our adult principals. DOUBT Auditions This Coming Weekend - Players Guild Theatre

Auditions for DOUBT at the Players Guild Theatre in Canton are coming up soon! WHEN: Sunday, October 15th, from 7-10 PM Monday, October 16th, from 7-10 PM WHAT TO PREPARE: Bring a headshot and resume if you have them. And come prepared with a 2-3 minute monologue that best showcases your acting ability OR come prepared to do a cold reading from the script. If you choose the latter, please be familiar with the play. REQUIREMENTS: 1 male, white, 20s-50s 1 female, white, 20s-30s 1 female, white, 40s-60s 1 female, black, 20s-50s ALL ROLES ARE PAID. REHEARSALS: Rehearsals will begin around October 29th and will continue until about Thanksgiving, 4-5 nights a week, to get the show mostly up to speed and ready to go. *Lakeland Civic Theatre* *Auditions for* *Merrily We Roll Along* Music and Lyrics by *Stephen Sondheim* Book by *George Furth* Directed by *Martin Friedman* Musical Direction by *Jordan Cooper* Sound Designed by *Eric Simna* Choreography by *Jennifer Justice* *The Play:* *Merrily We Roll Along, *written in 1981, is based on a 1934 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. The musical (with a book by George Furth) was first produced in November of 1981, where it ran for 17 performances. Not very successful eh? It tells of the disintegration of the friendship of successful songwriter Franklin Shepard, his lyricist and best friend Charlie Kringas, and novelist Mary Flynn. The action moves backward through time, from 1976 to 1957. This is one of Stephen Sondheim’s most accessible and difficult scores. It is most certainly about friendship and its importance in the lives of three people. This show has great personal meaning to me. And while the book is problematic; I am confident that our production team and the actors that are cast can overcome this. This is one great play. And the roles; did I mention the roles? Each one of these six folks are wonderful roles with fully realized characterizations and motivations. It will take special actors/singers to breathe life into these people. *Audition Information:* *Auditions will be held on Monday and Tuesday, October 23 and 24 at Lakeland Community College in Building D at 7:15pm. * *Auditions for the role of Frank Jr. (between the ages of 11 and 14 years of age) will ONLY take place on Monday and Tuesday, October 23 and 24 between the times of 5:45 and 6:45 pm.
