Based on actual events, MEMPHIS takes place in the underground clubs, radio stations, and recording studios of the segregated 50’s, where a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun falls in love with rock and roll and an electrifying African American singer Felicia Farrell. MEMPHIS paints a gritty and honest picture of the racial tension and cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice, and the music that changed forever. Filled with high-octane dancing, songs that perfectly capture the era, and an absorbing and emotional tale of fame and forbidden love. Rehearsals begin Sunday, July 2nd and will be held Sundays – Thursdays 6:30-10:30pm The production is scheduled to open August 11th and will run through Sept 3rd; with performances on Fridays & Saturdays @ 8:00PM and Sundays @ 2:00PM. DIVERSE AND NON-TRADITIONAL CASTING WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR ALL ROLES. Please see the character breakdown below for a full list of the roles available. (1) PAIDrole available. Gladys “Mama” Calhoun: Caucasian female, 40s-60s; excellent actor with comic skills; Huey’s stern, traditional blue-collar, southern mother who has worked her entire life to be able to support herself and her son, whom she loves, but about whom she constantly worries; vocal range: strong singer with alto-belt mix, B3-A5. Gator: African American male, mid 20s-40s; works as a bartender at Delray’s, hasn’t spoken since age five, when he saw his father killed; as the story progresses, he finds his voice again, must be an excellent actor and singer and move well, comic timing a plus; vocal range: great R&B; baritenor, F#3-A4. Bobby: African American male, mid 20s-40s; the janitor at Mr. Simmons’s radio station, full of personality and heart, role requires an actor who must dance well, as the character has a dance break in his show-stopping number “Big Love,” comic skills a plus; vocal range: great gospel voice, G3-C5. Mr. Simmons, Caucasian male, 30s-60s; the conservative owner of the radio station where Huey gets his start; a strong, southern, commanding businessman who becomes willing to take a chance on Huey when he realizes the audience Huey reaches and the money he can command; great actor who is comfortable singing. *LAND OF CLEVE REVIEW: * *Hair Band Musical * *'Rock of Ages' **at Cain Park * *Cranks the Speakers Up to 11* The Tony-nominated show is well-written by Chris D’Arienzo, and features classic tunes by hair bands such as Bon Jovi, Styx, Journey, Whitesnake, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, and Twisted Sister (with excellent arrangements and orchestrations by Ethan Popp). Director Joanna May Hunkins sure knows how to throw a party! She stages the show like a rock concert, complete with an ever-present band, killer lighting, sky-high speakers and mosh pits for adventurous audience members. Music direction by Jordan Cooper keeps the tuneage tight and tenacious throughout the night. Choreography by Kevin D. Marr II is straight outta MTV's heyday and lots of fun to watch. The totally rad ensemble features headliners Shane Lonergan and Lauren Ashley Berry as star-crossed lovers, Douglas F. Bailey II and Phil Carroll as closer-than-normal bar managers, Neely Gevaart and David Turner as unlikely allies, Connor Bogart O’Brien as the coolest singer on the planet, Trinidad Snider as a musical madam, and Kevin Kelly as a singing, scheming developer. Other talented performers involved in the show include Lavour Addison, Tony Heffner, Grace Hunt, Meredith Zahn, Natalie Girard, Brooke Turner, Alec Chock Irion, Tekla Gaughan and David James Grant. 24 Hour Musical at Playmakers

Good Afternoon NEOhioPal!! EXCITING NEWS!!!!! Playmakers is bringing back the 24 HOUR MUSICAL!!!!! Andthis year we're doing... Ooo, that was a close call. I almost typed it! But thething about 24 Hour Musical is that it is a surprise. Here are the basic deets: Ages: going into 9th grade in the fall - collegeDate for audition: June 22 Time for audition: 5-7pm Location for audition: Fairmount Temple 23727 Fairmount Blvd, Beachwood, OH, 44122 What to know... You will sing,read from a variety of scripts, and dance. We (the co-directors: Rachel Zakeand Sheri Gross) will cast the show based on this audition. Come back to Fairmount Temple on July 22 at 10pm for the big reveal!! Youwill find out the show and your part, then we will set to work on bringing ittogether over 24 hours (or so). The performance is July 23 at 7pm! You will not need to be off-book, as we work through the night to pull the show together.
