Will Kern's Hellcab Auditions HELLCAB is a seventy-minute collection of scenes from a day in the life of a Chicago cabbie. Beginning with a 6:30 a.m. trip by a born-again couple…the cabbie's long day's journey proceeds with fares from, among many others, a dangerous trio of druggies, a piggish mini-capitalist, a benumbed rape victim, an argumentative pair of fellow cabbies, a drunken woman on welfare, a smug lawyer, a randy couple on the way to a motel, and two boisterous New Yorkers out on the town. Alternately frightening, hilarious and poignant, these sharply etched blackouts and cameos…are capped by a stunning and very touching final scene. Nine readings of Playwright GYM members' work will be presenting at Dobama Theatre during their 2016/17 Season.All these readings are FREE and open to the public, with wine and beer available for a special GYM reading price of $1. All readings begin at 7 pm and are general seating. Monday, May 1Weimer by Les Hunter Directed by Anjanette HallA radical women's collective attempts to resist the authoritarian inclinations of their recently elected government. Based partially on research into contemporary and Weimar-era collectively organized communitarian projects, and in part developed out of conversations with the performers. The play, in the tradition of the German lehrstück (learning play), takes place in a heightened moment that borrows from both historic Weimar-era, Germany and contemporary America. Featuring: Brooke Turner, Sydnee Savannah Williams, Brittany Ganser, Bryce Evan Lewis, Kenzie Critzer and Esma M Eddeb Baldwin Wallace University Department of Theatre and Dance commissioned Weimar to appear as part of their 2017-2018 season. Monday, May 8 Rastus and Hattie by Lisa LangfordNeedra is an African-American scientist who’s perfectly happy being perfectly post-racial; in fact, she’s researching a way to excise racial trauma from Black people’s DNA. Needra and her best friend Marlene, who is white, have the perfect post-racial friendship—perfect until Marlene’s husband finds two robots who challenge Needra’s understanding of race and history in America. In the early 1930s, Westinghouse experimented with mechanical robots who were supposed to make life easier by doing all the stuff humans didn’t want to do: cooking, cleaning, fighting wars, etc. However, one robot, Rastus, was Black. Seriously. He had brown skin, an afro, and was dressed not unlike a slave. I started wondering why a time-saving robot had to be Black and what did Blackness mean in post-Obama America. Rastus & Hattie comes out of all that. Featuring: Courtney Brown, Gordon Hinchen, Samantha Richards, Eric Sever, Amy Schwabauer and Greg White. (VOCI) to perform IMAGINE: a tribute to John Lennon CANTON, OH – April 28, 2017 Enjoy a night of Beatles and Lennon music wrapped around an adaptation of John Lennon, inspired by interviews he gave throughout his career, and culminating with his final interview which was given only hours before his tragic shooting. Hear musings about the early days where he and Paul were discovering their prowess as songwriters, about how he and Yoko met, her influence on the Beatles, how the fab four never could quite work out a reunion....and much more! Under the direction of Dr. Jon C. Peterson, Voices of Canton will present Imagine, a musical and theatrical tribute to the life and legacy of John Lennon. Favorite tunes by the Beatles will be performed by the chorus and the Sing Stark! band, led by P.J. Chavez. Amidst the music, excerpts from some of John Lennon’s radio interviews will be dramatically recreated by Rob Johansen, who created the concept for the program and authored the script. Rob Johansen is thrilled to make the trek to Canton to perform with Voices of Canton. Originally from New York, Rob came to the midwest to attend the Indiana University Graduate School for Acting. He loved it so much he stayed. Rob has had the good fortune of making his living exclusively through theatre for 21 years. Although Rob works at Regional Theatres across the county, he is proud to call Indianapolis his home. In his time in Indy, Rob has co-founded a successful theatre company, appeared in almost fifty shows at the Indiana Repertory Theatre, become a professional fight choreographer, and taught and directed at five colleges. Rob's biggest passion is volunteering at the Humane Society where he helps train stray and mistreated dogs to become great family members. In a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35-millimeter film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on the screen. With a keen insight and finely-tuned comic eye, The Flick is a hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world. The Flick was commissioned by Playwrights Horizon in New York City, where it received its world premiere on March 12, 2013. Following its limited engagement there, the production transferred to the off-Broadway Barrow Street Theatre, where it played from May 7, 2015, to Jan. 10, 2016. Among its many honors, The Flick won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the 2013 OBIE Award for Playwriting and the 2013 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. The Flick was also a 2013 Drama Desk Award nominee for Outstanding Play, a 2013 Lucille Lortel Award nominee for Outstanding Play and was a finalist for the 2013 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play. Director Craig Joseph says "The Flick is not so much plot-driven as it is a character study of folks who both desire to connect with one another authentically, and also fear being entirely known. What makes for good drama in The Flick is watching how they each navigate both the joys and pains of becoming oneself. Annie Baker is a playwright and teacher who won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for her play The Flick. Among her works are the Shirley, Vermont plays, which take place in the fictional town of Shirley: Circle Mirror Transformation, Body Awareness, and The Aliens. Baker graduated from the Department of Dramatic Writing at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in playwriting from Brooklyn College in 2009. CLEVELAND, OH - Great Lakes Theater will present CAMP THEATER! – a summer drama camp held at Berea-Midpark High School for students ages 4-18. Students can sign up for one or both weeks of camp, which will run June 12 – 16, and June 19 - 23, 2017. Immersing students in interactive and educational theater-based activities, CAMP THEATER! is a unique opportunity for students to work with and learn from Great Lakes Theater’s professional teaching artists in a fun, safe and supportive environment. Daily classes will be held at Berea-Midpark High School in one-week sessions from Monday through Friday.
