We are so lucky to have such a talented community of actors in Northeast Ohio. For years I have written down my response to many area performances only to keep them to myself. However, after spending an entire weekend seeing GREAT theatre, I have decided it's time to share. I will begin with Jesus Christ Superstar at Weathervane Playhouse. To be honest, I've felt the last few productions I have seen here were not quite as strong as shows I have seen in the past and I really do not like anything by ALW, but I gave Weathervane another chance and I was so pleased that I did. The stage is filled with powerful voices-leads and ensemble alike. I was reading the playbill prior to curtain and felt a little concerned about the number of the ensemble in the small space but director Melanie Pepe has a strong vision and utilizes the number of performers to fill rather than crowd the stage. Justin Williams as Jesus has a remarkable voice and is enjoyable to watch on stage. Patrick Dukeman as Herod is the best I've ever seen him. Standouts to watch in featured roles are Tyler Ferrebee and Josh Larkin. The ensemble is also made up of a large group of talented singers. Unfortunately for me, I felt a large amount of disconnect between the characters. Dawn Sniadak-Yamokoski has the look and the lungs for Mary Magdalene and Adam Vigneault's voice is better with each production, but neither did much for me other than show me that they're the great singers they are. Even the ensemble seemed to be more focused on drawing attention to themselves then telling the story at times. It must be said that Jasen Smith can do no wrong with costuming. Every production he delivers and even something at big and demanding as Jesus Christ Superstar is no match for him. The choreography is appropriate and clean and the music sounds wonderful. On an ending note, much praise is deserved by Richard Morris Jr. for creating the appropriate and unique atmosphere with his lighting and technical design. This show runs through April 23rd. CLEVELAND, OH - Great Lakes Theater will present CAMP THEATER! – a summer drama camp held at Berea-Midpark High School for students ages 4-18. Students can sign up for one or both weeks of camp, which will run June 12 – 16, and June 19 - 23, 2017. Immersing students in interactive and educational theater-based activities, CAMP THEATER! is a unique opportunity for students to work with and learn from Great Lakes Theater’s professional teaching artists in a fun, safe and supportive environment. Daily classes will be held at Berea-Midpark High School in one-week sessions from Monday through Friday. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 10, 2017 Great Lakes Theater Announces Auditions for Actor/Teachers Great Lakes Theater (GLT) announces auditions for non-Equity actor/teachers for its School Residency Program for the 2017 – 2018 school year. Actors of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to audition. These are full-time, seasonal, paid positions, offered from August/September, 2017 through May, 2018. Requirements include an undergraduate degree in any discipline, as well as previous stage experience or actor training. Teaching experience or prior work with elementary, junior high or high school age students is a plus, but not required. Applicants must have a valid driver license, a reliable automobile and complete a background check. Applicants are requested to prepare one Shakespearean monologue and one contrasting contemporary monologue for the audition. Both monologues should total no more than three minutes combined. All auditions are by appointment only. Applicants must schedule an audition online. KENT STATE UNIVERSITY AT STARK THEATRE TO PRESENT FAMED PLAYWRIGHT NEIL LaBUTE’S REASONS TO BE HAPPY IN APRIL Tickets go on sale April 3 at 8 a.m. (NORTH CANTON, OHIO, March 30, 2017) – Kent State University at Stark’s 2016-17 theatrical season will close with Reasons to Be Happy by Neil LaBute. The play will be performed on April 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. and on April 16 and 23 at 2 p.m. at the Kent State Stark Theatre. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be provided for the performance on April 23. Reasons to Be Happy begins three years after a contentious break-up, with characters Steph and Greg wondering if they can make a fresh go of it. Trouble is, she’s married to someone else and he’s just embarked on a relationship with Steph’s best friend, Carly, a single mom whose jealous ex-husband, Kent, has trouble articulating his feelings. Navigating the rocky landscape of conflicting agendas and exploding emotions is not going to be an easy task for any of them. The four characters, whose personalities barely match up, become entangled in one another’s lives in romantic, humorous and, sometimes, violent ways as they pursue a common denominator – happiness. However, such happiness does not come without tension, sacrifice and a little bit of humor. Please note: For mature audiences only due to strong language. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $7 for non-Kent State students and senior citizens. All Kent State students are admitted free of charge with a current student ID.
