*Bay Village Theater’s ‘Almost, Maine’ an ideal inaugural production* Roman Macharoni, Community Theater critic, Mar 6, 2017 Having turned an underutilized church hall into a new stage for local talent, the newly-christened Bay Village Community Theater’s production of “Almost, Maine” is a match made in heaven. First performed at the Portland Stage Company in 2004 before a brief visit to Off-Broadway, John Cariani’s comedy consists of eleven short, mostly two-character scenes enacted by eight performers – Mackenzie Barry-Trombley, Gabriel Chuna, Kaycee Craig, Jim Hagan, Margaret Hnat, Casey McCann, Brittany Shrake and Natalie Romano. Each scene offers a literal interpretation of a common metaphor for love, loss and regret, and is presented with endearing self-awareness and tongue-in-cheek humor. And each character is plain-spoken and propelled to wax poetic by the mystical energy of the aurora borealis high above the mythical town of Almost, Maine. Relationships begin, end and change beyond recognition, as strangers become friends, friends become lovers, and lovers turn into strangers. Though presented as isolated incidents, each story is held together by a web of connections that visualize a whole community experiencing the same gushing romanticisms. “Sad and Glad” is particularly noteworthy. Here, Jimmy (Chuna) finds that his ex-girlfriend Sandrine (Barry-Trombley) has moved on faster than he expected and finds himself filtering his true emotions. Have you ever watched a movie or a play and immediately wanted to talk to the writer to tell them how little sense their script made? Or maybe you wish they would have added in more information about the super cool sister character. Well - now's your chance. Stow Players has a new program this year called the Emerging Playwrights Reading Series where local playwrights can submit their work to be presented in a Staged Reading where the audience is encouraged to give feedback. On Monday, March 20th at 7:30pm we will be presenting a series of short plays written by local playwright Brandi Eaton at the Heritage Barn at Silver Springs. Admission to the performance is FREE. They have gathered to talk about their reactions to this situation in their lives, both positive and negative. Her one-person show of poetry about her transgender journey, *Exact Change*, had its world premiere at Cleveland Public Theatre in January, 2014. Since then, it has been performed at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, at the 2015 New York International Fringe Festival, and at several other venues. Beginning with a 6:30 a.m. trip by a born-again couple…the cabbie's long day's journey proceeds with fares from, among many others, a dangerous trio of druggies, a piggish mini-capitalist, a benumbed rape victim, an argumentative pair of fellow cabbies, a drunken woman on welfare, a smug lawyer, a randy couple on the way to a motel, and two boisterous New Yorkers out on the town. Alternately frightening, hilarious and poignant, these sharply etched blackouts and cameos…are capped by a stunning and very touching final scene.
