Fridays in August : Latin Rhythm Class at Verb Ballets New for the month of August! Join us in the studio for Latin Rhythms with Verb Ballets dancer Nathanaël Santiago. Each week will feature a new Latin Rhythm lesson at 6:30pm followed by the opportunity to practice with an open dance party. No experience needed. Class will run every Friday in August starting August 5th at the Verb Ballets studio in Shaker Heights. Try one week or join us for the whole month. Bring a friend or come to meet others that want to learn new rhythms. Cost is $48 per person or $80 per couple for the month. Walk-ins are welcome to join each week; the walk-in fee is $15 per class at the door. No need to pre-register pay at the door.

OPEN THEATRE AUDITIONS for What We're Up Against by Theresa Rebeck September 6 & 7 at 6 p.m. Kent State University at Stark Fine Arts Theatre 6000 Frank Avenue NW North Canton, Ohio 44720 The Kent State University at Stark Theatre has announced open auditions for the first theatrical production of the season, What We're Up Against by Theresa Rebeck, and directed by Kent State Stark Associate Professor of Theatre and Theatre Director Brian Newberg. Auditions are open to everyone, including students and community persons. We encourage diversity in our casting. What We're Up Against features Eliza, an intelligent and impetuous female associate at a male-dominated architecture firm, who challenges boundaries and sexist rules in her dog-eat-dog profession. Watch as she takes a whack at outdated office politics to break through the glass ceiling and rocks the architecture world to its core in this in-your-face dark comedy. Auditions will be held on September 6 and 7 at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre, 6000 Frank Avenue NW in Jackson Township. Roles are available for two women and three men. No children. Those auditioning may perform a prepared monologue, if they wish, and the director may also choose sides (selected scene excerpts) for some to perform. The production will be performed November 11 - 20 in the Kent State Stark Theatre. Rehearsals will begin September 12 and will occur five evenings a week until opening. Scripts (and audition sides or scene excerpts used for the auditions) are available for perusal for periods up to 24 hours from the Fine Arts secretary (330-244-5151), Monday through Friday, during business hours (8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.). The campus will be closed on September 5, in observance of the holiday. Audition appointments are recommended, but not required. Scripts and audition sides will also be available in the reserve area of the Stark Campus Library. Dancing Wheels Re-imagines Jim Henson’s Labyrinth on August 12

Dancing Wheels Company returns to Cain Park’s Evans Amphitheater to bring to life Jim Henson’s magical and mysterious world of the Labyrinth. With music by David Bowie, this production will give homage to the genius and artistry of this iconic master. Former company member Dezaré Foster, whose dream to bring this amazing production to Cleveland has been four years in the making, choreographs this world premiere. The fabled story first conceived by Jim Henson and Dennis Lee was made into a feature film that showcased Bowie’s talents as an actor, musician and vocalist. Now for the first time, this story will be reinvented for a live-on-stage production featuring lead characters, Sarah and the Goblin King, portrayed by Dancing Wheels Company members, Sara Lawrence-Sucato and Demarco Sleeper. As a strong wheelist, Sleeper, along with Lawrence-Sucato demonstrate athleticism and power in their many encounters and adventures. Foster said her desire to create this new work with the Dancing Wheels Company was because “it was not only an integrated Company but also a strong, raw, eccentric and diverse group of dancers.” She went on to say “With these characteristics and the charisma that each dancer possesses, I believe they can truly relay the overall message of this particular story.” Other endearing characters are Toby, Sarah’s sister portrayed by Emily Schwarting and Gigi, Sarah’s guiding light portrayed by Mary Verdi-Fletcher. The production brings to life a whole host of scenes that include the twelve-member cast, ranging from the dark depths of the Labyrinth to the spirited and fun loving land where the “magic dance” takes place. In addition to the premiere of Labyrinth: A Tribute, two additional pieces from the Dancing Wheels repertory will be performed: Wall of Glass, choreographed by Lisa K. Lock, and an excerpt of Anomalies, choreographed by Mark Tomasic. The collective works on this program showcase the versatility and strength of this unique company.
