Playwrights Local 4181 announces the world premiere of Les Hunter’s contemporary drama, To the Orchard. Directed by Dale Heinen, the play runs May 27 through June 5 at Waterloo Arts in North Collinwood and June 10 through 12 at Dobama Theatre in Cleveland Heights. In To the Orchard, college student Rachel Bergman reveals her sexual identity to her Orthodox Jewish father, who also is struggling with his own hidden past. In coming to terms with each other--and themselves--the pair must reconcile the conflicting pulls of tradition and individual desire. The play takes place in Brooklyn in the recent past, but incorporates dreamlike visits to turn-of-the-century England and the lost Jewish Eastern Europe. The spirits of Robert Plant and Virginia Woolf add a touch of magic realism to this intimate work about making mistakes, coming clean, and the power of history and family. The cast of To the Orchard features Robert Branch, Kelsey Angel Baehrens, Andrea Belser, and Michael Regnier. Adapted by Cleveland-based playwright Greg Vovos and directed by TCT’s Director of Education Katelyn Cornelius, this 30-minute adventure is a perfect illustration of imaginative teamwork, and how to use creative thinking to overcome a bad situation. Crafts and Activities Between performances, families are invited to stay and play with TCT and The Children’s Museum of Cleveland. Children of all ages can enjoy making crafts on theme with the performance while The Children’s Museum of Cleveland engages children in exciting science-based activities. Summer Puppet and Mask Camp — June 20th - June 24th Kids (ages 6-10) & Early Teens (ages 11-14) Mon-Thurs 8:30am-3pm; Fri 8:30am-noon This one-week camp allows students to build puppets and masks, and write their own stories to perform for parents and friends at week's end. All masks and puppets made are theirs to keep. TCT offers three in-house Youth Theatre Arts courses per year. They take place on location at TCT—a 188 seat, ADA compliant theatre located on the eastern edge of the Detroit-Shoreway area of Cleveland's near west side. TCT uses professional artist/educators working in their dedicated fields to teach every class, residency, and workshop. Each artist/educator has been trained to carry out TCT's educational offerings to the fullest, and to ensure that every child involved in its programming is noticed, encouraged to participate, and supported. TCT's artist/educators provide children with the tools to grow and bloom not only artistically, but with the confidence and new awareness that involvement in the arts brings.
