Rob Wachala RUN TO THE CAPULETS, RAISE UP THE MONTAGUES is a modern reconstruction of Romeo & Juliet, best described as CSI meets Shakespeare. The story is told using the classic texts rearranged to investigate why the young lovers died. The play is set in the world of today, with its smartphones, video conferencing and social media. Along with a dazzling projection design and contemporary music, this production utilizes a virtual cast interacting with live actors. The virtual cast is comprised of anyone in the general public that submits a video through our online process. Are you ready for your close up? RUN TO THE CAPULETS, RAISE UP THE MONTAGUES (RCRM) was adapted in 2007/08 and premiered in the summer of 2008, at the Stratford Summer Festival. RCRM was presented "in Rep" with A Midsummer Night's Dream, as an edgy new production of Romeo & Juliet. It was like an experimental "B" Side for the popular summer classic. RCRM was created by T. Paul Lowry while he served as the Creative Director of New Haven Theater Company (NHTC), Under the leadership of Mr. Lowry, NHTC had been experimenting in theatrical form, to redefine it, in the hopes of reaching new audiences and tell interesting stories in new ways. Inspired by a little known element in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, Mildred Montag's obsession with the interactive television, NHTC endeavored to develop a project that would allow anyone, anywhere to participate in the theatrical process, and to be able to do so on their terms. When it came to selecting the first project, the familiarity of Shakespeare seemed a logical direction, and the story of Rome and Juliet presented an avenue to connect to a younger audience. Romeo & Juliet is one of the most well-known stories in western drama, the ending, with the untimely death of the lead characters, is an established plot point known to practically every audience member. Mr. Lowry used this common knowledge as a tool, and wanted to investigate the story deeper. Popular television dramas like Law and Order and CSI, gave inspiration for how to reconstruct the story, making it and investigation into the death of Romeo and Juliet. RCRM became a reconstruction of the classic play by starting at the end, and looking at the play through the eyes of the Friar and the Prince, both smaller roles in traditional versions. Still using the Shakespearean text, RCRM is a "CSI meets Shakespeare" version, updated to incorporate modern elements; cell phones, video conferencing, the internet and modern music. What exactly is The Manhattan Project - Cleveland Lab? The Manhattan Project is a low-stakes, nonthreatening place for actors and playwrights to meet and work together. Based on the Theatre Lab model taught at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama and inspired by The Brooklyn Generator in New York, The Manhattan Project wants to introduce Cleveland actors and playwrights to each other by organizing a bi-monthly production of brand new 10-minute plays. Participating artists will meet early in the month and will be broken into teams, each with one playwright. The playwright will then be given a writing prompt to write a new 10-minute play based on the prompt and including all the team's actors. The rest of the evening the team members will get to know each other and get a feel for each other's skills and voices. The teams will reconvene later in the month to perform these plays for each other. These 10-minute plays are not an end in themselves. Through these small collaborations we hope to build relationships between the two most vulnerable artists in theatre; the actors who put themselves on stage and the playwrights who pour themselves onto the page. Perhaps these 10-minute plays will grow into longer works or maybe these collaborations will become partnerships on larger projects. Each evening’s auditions will begin at 7:00. Performance dates June 9-26. There are 3 cast members in their 20s and 30s. Andy: He is the partner who holds Fallout, a protest magazine together. He juggles lack of money for bills and rent with trying to keep Norman on track. He must be good at creating multiple voices to pull off his deceptions! Norman: He is the brains, the writer, the heart and soul of Fall Out. He also becomes quite crazed over their new neighbor Sophie. There will be lots of physical humor. This actor must not be afraid to be a bit zany! Sophie: She is a red headed knock out who moves next door. She is uber patriotic, having once represented the US in the Olympic swim competition. She must have a convincing southern accent. Cleveland Public Theatre Announces a New Staff Position: Education Director Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) produces groundbreaking performances and life-changing educational programs inside of our mission to raise consciousness and nurture compassion. CPT seeks an Education Director interested in joining its hard-working team with the ambitious goals of growing the organization and changing the community. Description of Position The Education Director works with the education staff at CPT, and works closely with and reports directly to Executive Artistic Director. This position is a year-round, salaried, staff position. Salary commensurate with experience, some benefits included. The position requires a highly motivated servant-leader who will oversee three longstanding core education programs: STEP, a job-training summer theatre creation program for low-income youth; Y-Haven Theatre, which creates new plays with homeless men in treatment for drug and alcohol abuse; and Brick City Theatre, an after-school/summer-school program with youth and families residing in public housing;. The ED also oversees new programs and explores new avenues for growth. Currently CPT has four full time year-round employees in the education department and plans to add two new full time positions to accommodate growth and new programs. CPT cares passionately about reflecting our community and pursuing diversity at all levels of the organization. The men learn performance and technical theatre skills and create an original play based on their life experiences. The play performs at CPT and tours to about 5-8 local venues. The program is typically managed by 1-2 education full time staff members (Director, Associate, or Coordinator) and/or 1-2 outside contractors who function as co-creator, co-directors, and/or tour manager. In the 15-16 season CPT will serve 400 children at two CMHA estates.
