LAND OF CLEVE REVIEW: Ensemble Theatre Uncages a Fascinatingly Ferocious * 'Bengal Tiger at * * the Baghdad Zoo'* The two-act play is directed with intimate intensity by the ever-inventive Celeste Cosentino. From the very moment the audience members enter the theatre, they are immersed in a wartorn world of captivity, scrutiny, restlessness and paranoia. Cosentino has also assembled a cast that is simply astounding in their re-enactment of this foreign and yet familiar environment. Michael Regnier is comfortably cantankerous in the title role, to the point where one really wishes they could have a conversation with a tiger. Daniel McElhaney and Leilani Barrett are great as grunts on guard duty whose lives are forever linked after a routine patrol goes horribly wrong. An unexpected accident alters their destinies and leaves them defenseless against their personal demons. Tom Kondilas and Assad Khaishgi are excellent as a put-upon interpreter and his former employer who forces him to do his bidding from beyond the grave. Juliette Regnier and Justine Zapin represent the repressed and resilient females caught in the crossfire. Auditions are open to children aged 6-18.* *Audition Requirements: * Music Audition: 18-22 bars of a song in the style of the show. You may sing a Disney song, however we ask that it is not from Beauty and the Beast, Jr. We will also have you sing scales to determine your range, and may ask you to sing a portion from the show. Ran into a person last night working on a feature film. The story sounded interested and I gave him some advice he asked for. Then I asked, what are you going to do after you finish the movie. He said, get it to festivals. We are just doing it for fun. A few days before this I went to an event at the Cleveland Playhouse where they talked about theater and audience and money. This is why The Film Community here is seen as a "hobby or not professional" according to a recent article. It is not the quality of work or the styles. It is because it is not focused on making money. Making money from art does not cheapen its value! Some feel, and I do not argue with them, that "The Godfather" was a great movie. Yet, it also made a ton of money. I will not dare tell the other filmmakers here what to do, but I will say Prelude2Cinema is a business. This timeless musical will be presented in the beautiful Medina Performing Arts Center July 17, 18, 23, 24 & 25 at 8 PM and July 19 & 26 at 2 PM. Auditions for *West Side Story *will take place Monday, May 18 from 5-9 PM and Tuesday, May 19 from 5-9 PM. Auditions will be held at the Garfield North Arts Complex (formerly the Grace Drake Center for the Arts), 222 S Broadway, Medina, Ohio. Callbacks will be Wednesday, May 20 from 6-9 PM. Callbacks will be held at the Medina Performing Arts Center, 851 Weymouth Rd, Medina Ohio. Please note: Auditions will be held in a separate location than callbacks, rehearsals, and performances. Prepare 16-32 bars of a musical theatre piece in the style of the show. Prepare a monologue of your choice, approximately 2 minutes in length. Please bring your resume, headshot, and music clearly marked, as an accompanist will be provided. A cappella auditions are discouraged. No CDs/iPods will be permitted for accompaniment. You will not be asked to dance at the audition. However, a dance audition will be part of the callback process. Rehearsals begin for *West Side Story* on Monday, June 8. All rehearsals will take place at the Medina Performing Arts Center. Rehearsals are generally scheduled Sundays-Thursdays from 7-10PM. Character Casting Breakdown **RUPERT SCHECT (six years-old) Blond with hazel eyes. Mysterious and very serious. He’s frightened and confused with his apparent connection to the old Exeter slaughterhouse. The only person he befriends is Mia. **DEVIN CROSS (African American, late 40s) Former soldier. Athletic. Intelligent. His father is a former employee of the old Exeter Meat Company and became missing. Devin has always been suspicious that the old building played a role in his father’s disappearance. With the new Exeter Lofts, he finally has the opportunity to learn the truth first hand and is anxious to use his skills and experience in intelligence gathering to finally uncover the truth. **JACKSON DEVEROUX (Caucasian, late 20s, athletic) Professional hockey player. He’s just been traded to his hometown team. He’s known as an enforcer on the ice, but has a weakness for being attracted to all the wrong women, which has left him a bit vulnerable. His fresh start as a new resident in the building is jeopardized when he meets Emily who lives one floor above. **BLAIN CORNISH (mid-60s) a pompous professorial-type. He is a longtime representative of the National Historical Society. He’s an expert in old buildings, architecture, and related history. He is particularly unnerved with the task of presenting national historical recognition to the Exeter Lofts – a building he despises, as it was once a slaughterhouse with a particularly dark history. **SCOTT (20’s) Best friends with Jackson. Sports a hipster beard with matching specs. He serves as the only person who Jackson can trust. He takes his role as protector and confidant very seriously despite his fun-loving demeanor. **RACHEL (mid to 20's) Emily’s outgoing older sister and best friend who not only protects her baby sister but offers up some well needed advice.
