He is befriended by popular, athlete, Evan Roth who also struggles with the need to “fit in”. This unlikely friendship faces life-altering choices, the importance of tolerance and empathy, bullying, choosing to do the right thing and the realization that some decisions have ramifications that last forever. Through laughter, moments of triumph, resilience, courage and heartbreak, the lives of William, Evan and his peers will never be the same. This ‘call to action’ musical drama ignites conversations regarding inclusivity, empathy and the seriousness of food allergies. We are still seeking brave and dynamic Performers, Improvisers, Clowns and Actors for World Premiere of What is the Butt Game? produced as part of the Borderlight Festival (July 26 - 28) To be considered, please fill out the form below and submit a recording of yourself retelling a childhood memory. Minimal rehearsal required! About What is the Butt Game? In 1989, when Savannah was three years old, her daycare was shut down by the Child Protection Agency under suspicion of child abuse. The primary investigator was particularly interested in something a child called “the butt game”, and interviewed many of the kids and parents to try to find out how it was played. This investigation was part of the Satanic Panic; a fear sweeping the nation over the idea of Satan-worshipping sex cults that loved to abuse and ritually murder toddlers. All these accusations later proved false, but in the late 1980s, police and social workers were sure that Satanic cults were operating right under their noses. After Savannah’s daycare was shut down, the parents stayed in touch; trading kids back and forth for sleepovers, hosting barbecues in the summer, and camping together on the shores of Lake Michigan. The accusation of Satanic abuse was the very thing that brought the group closer and made them into a chosen family. With the help of collaborator Connor Hogan and an ensemble of local actors, Savannah attempts to answer the question: why did CPS see danger where Savannah saw love and community? Participants will also receive a complimentary performance resume review (via email outside of the workshop).NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 15-20 performers can be accommodated for an hour workshop, with unlimited audience (“view only”) participants.WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING: performance resume and sheet music for the accompanist: cut clearly marked, in a binder, in the correct key. If no cuts are marked, they will do the first 30 seconds of the song.COST: FreeWe hope many people attending our OCTA NE Regional Festival on June 22 will take us up on this workshop. Space is limited so reserve your place today! Kami Anderson has almost 3 decades of professional performing experience in West African dance. She been immersed in African dance since the age of four growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When she was 10 years old, she was tapped to be a member of Ko-Thi Dance Company’s youth company, Ton Ko-Thi. It was in Ko-Thi that she began her formal training in West African dance. In 1999, she became a member of Coyaba Dance Theater in Washington, DC where she mastered her teaching and drumming musicality with African Dance.
