We are inviting playwrights to submit 20-30 -minute plays on the topic of Virtual and in-person *mental health issues *which can be performed on Cleveland area stages and YouTube . Selected stories will depict *mental health challenges* the character faces, is overcoming, or has overcome, which allow him / her to now live an improved mental health life (like the Phoenix – “I Rise.”). *“Wake Up to Healing** Arts” Submissions should:* Show how the performing arts (drama, vocal & instrumental music, dance, poetry) may be used to help address mental health issues in addition to / instead of clinical methods. LOCATION: Canton, Ohio area CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: BRIAN ZIEGLER (Caucasian, Male, 20’s to play younger) - Leading role. Confident high school basketball star that goes through a transformative journey when his post high school plans take a detour. Must be able to portray a range of emotion, from cockiness to brokenness, and redemptive humility. Will endure a severe injury that eventually has the actor walking with a limp, and other restrictions. SUZIE (20’s) - Supporting lead role. Brian’s main love interest. “Pretty, young, blonde girl” studying to be a physical therapist. Meets him as he’s still recovering from his big accident, but doesn’t judge him. Treats him with love, humility, tenderness, and respect. DAVE - Supporting featured role. Brian’s brother. Loves Brian. Supportive and encouraging, but not without a few brotherly jabs too. PA ANNOUNCER - Supporting role. 5 lines. Enthusiastic basketball announcer at a Northwest HS game. CRAIG - Supporting role. 5 lines. POLICE OFFICER 3 - Non-speaking, featured background role. Seen in a group of two other police officers who crash a drinking after party at a farm. LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL GIRL 1 - Supporting role. Under 5 lines. In distress after she, Brian, and the other students get caught by the police at the drinking after party at the farm. Has to be crying. Is aware of stakes that no one else is. LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL GIRL 2 - Supporting role. 5 + lines. Is found in distress at first, while hiding from the police, but is later appreciative that Brian hangs to protect her, along with those with her. LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL GIRL 3 - Non-speaking, featured background role. Found in distress hiding with two other girls from the police. POLICE OFFICER 2 - Supporting role. 5+ lines. Seen with two other police officers when they crash the drinking after party at the farm. Is seen again by himself, when he catches Brian’s. Firm. Clearly knows Brian, but has to follow through with rules too. BOXING OPPONENT - Supporting role. Takes Brian on in a cash prize boxing match, and has been in other matches prior as a champion. Cocky. Hasn’t lost in 3 years. (A younger “Bone Saw” from Spider-Man, anyone?) AKRON UNIVERSITY COACH - Supporting role. 5 + lines. Approachable. Friendly, but still asking all the right questions a coach should ask. Has been watching Brian’s basketball career since he was in high school. Impressed with what he sees. CONSTRUCTION WORKER 1 - Supporting role. Fair amount of lines and a couple scenes. Works with Brian as a concrete laborer. Pressures him to come out and drink with the crew after work. Despite this fact, he starts to observe Brian’s partying getting out of hand later. Has some responsibility himself - leaves a party early as a promise to his wife. CONSTRUCTION WORKER 2 - Supporting role. Fair amount of lines and a couple scenes. Works with Brian as a concrete laborer. Also pressures him to come out and drink with the crew after work initially, but becomes concerned for Brian’s lifestyle later. Still has a bit of a wild side himself, despite having a family. CONSTRUCTION WORKER 3 - Non-speaking, IMPORTANT featured background role. Works with Brian as a concrete laborer, and stays with him later at a bar than their other coworkers. Believes in Brian and even prophesizes over him. Is Brian’s physical therapist during outpatient appointments. All around her, hell begins to break loose at RiseUP, an education nonprofit that matches urban youth of color with inspiring mentors from the world of business. A scandal involving a student breaks, and Nadine discovers that RiseUP isn’t as worthy and wholesome as it pretends to be. not-for-profit (or the equity, diversity and inclusion play) tackles the dichotomy of policy vs. practice and investigates what is really at the core of toxic, microaggressive workplace environments. ________________________________ ABOUT THE PROCESS… This rehearsal process will be conventional in nature and based in script analysis, character analysis, and emotional arc. Actors will be asked to make strong proposals, be generous, and meet deadlines given. Rehearsals will begin September 16. Rehearsals are 5-6 times a week, with evening weekday rehearsals and some daytime weekend rehearsals. Performances begin with First Preview October 24. The production opens on October 26 and runs through November 9, Thu/Fri/Sat/Mon at 7:00pm, and Sunday matinee at 3pm in the James Levin Theatre. CONTENT DISCLOSURES ABOUT THE PLAY… not-for-profit includes frank descriptions and depictions of racism against Black people and women and discussion of sexual abuse of a child. ________________________________ AUDITIONS… Saturday, June 15, 10am – 1pm Monday, June 17, 6pm – 9pm There will be no callbacks for this production. Auditions are by appointment only and will be scheduled in 1 hour increments. Prepared auditions will be individual, but actors should be prepared to stay for the entire hour slot. Her plays have been developed with Theatre503 (London), The Traverse Theatre (Edinburgh), Company One Theatre (Boston), The Fire This Time Festival (New York), The Playwrights Realm (New York), The Public Theater (New York) and La Jolla Playhouse (San Diego). Fran’s play not-for-profit (or the equity, diversity and inclusion play) was featured in The Playwrights’ Realm’s INK’D Festival in April 2021 and in La Jolla Playhouse’s DNA New Works Series in July 2021. AUDITIONS for KIDSHAKES *THE TEMPEST, ABRIDGED* *A co-production of Cleveland Shakespeare Festival and Kulture Kids* *KIDShakes* is an outdoor, site-specific, interactive, and educational performance of classic texts for young audiences. Each performance consists of a 20 minute educational workshop that includes a craft, music, or dance, followed by a 40 minute abridged version of a classic story. Following the success of last year's *A Midsummer's Night's Dream*, this year we are offering *The Tempest* by William Shakespeare! *Seeking* *ADULT actors* for this Shakespeare for young audiences. This production will delight patrons of all ages, with beloved music enjoyed over the decades. Written by Douglas McGrath, <https://www.mtishows.com/user/901389> words and music by Gerry Goffin & Carole King<https://www.caroleking.com/>, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, this music was by arrangement with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Orchestrations, vocals, incidental music arrangements are by Steve Sidwell. Originally produced on Broadway by Paul Blake, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, and Mike Bosner. This hit musical about the life and career of legend Carole King runs in the Senney Theater on the Lakewood campus from July 12 to August 11, 2024. Additional performances Thursday, July 25, and August 1 and 8, 2024. Music direction is by Larry Goodpaster and choreography by Lauren Marousek. Cast includes Actor's Equity Association members Mikhail Roberts as Gerry Goffin and Chris Richards as Don Kirshner. Carole King is played by New York actress Elsie Carlisle. Now in his 33rd season, Beck Center for the Arts' Artistic Director, and director of this musical production, Scott Spence said, "Like the hit phenom Jersey Boys, Beautiful, The Carole King Musical has become one of the premiere Bio-Musicals of the past 25 years.
