Fiddle Boot Camp This Summer at TMS

Master fiddler Paul Kirk will be teaching an Old-Time Fiddle Boot Camp at the Ohio City location of The Music Settlement August 8-10, 2023. This workshop will focus on the bowings, rhythmic patterns, and bow stroke needed to produce an authentic, Round Peak old-time fiddle sound. Rare and obscure Early American tunes, cross tuning, and droning will also be taught in this fun and educational camp. The camp will be tailored for experienced violinists and fiddlers from other musical traditions who want to learn old-time fiddling. Old-time fiddlers who would like to delve deeper and refine their style would benefit from this camp as well. Painting the Town: Art Competition for Utility Box Designs Building on the success of several years of traffic utility box projects, the Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) is pleased to announce this year’s project: *Painting the Town*. SHAC is sponsoring a juried *art competition* for the design of *utility boxes* located in Shaker Heights. Local artists are invited to participate. All designs must be submitted electronically on the template provided. Designs and applications must be submitted to SHAC via email ( info(a)shakerartscouncil.org) no later than *Monday **10 April 2023.* Eligibility: Applicants must be at least 21 years old and live or work in Shaker Heights. Applicants who reside in the Shaker Heights School District or are a member of the Shaker Arts Council also are eligible. Applicants may submit more than one (1) design, but each must be submitted in a separate email. There are no entry fees. Artists retain all copyrights to their artwork. Artists whose designs are selected will receive a $500.00 stipend after the work is installed. All entries must be anonymous. *Do not sign your submittal nor indicate your name on the submitted design document.* André Taylor, Art Educator, will serve as this year’s jury chair. Since all of the boxes have slightly different dimensions, artists whose work is selected may have to reformat their designs to fit the matched boxes. Design Criteria: - Black or very dark backgrounds are not permitted. - Words are not permitted in the designs, per the City of Shaker Heights code. - Art created in non-digital media must be digitized for submittal. - Final designs must be submitted as camera-ready, 600 dpi files. By submitting a design proposal, all artists agree to: - allow SHAC to use images of the designs on printed materials, websites and social media for promotional purposes only; - allow SHAC to photograph the work; - allow SHAC to submit the proposal to the city’s Shaker Heights Arts Task Force for their final approval and to obtain the artist’s modification of the design, if necessary, to meet the city’s requirements. Hello! My name is Tori Johnson and I’m a senior DMP student at Kent State University working on my senior thesis project titled “The Other Father”. I’m currently looking for cast and crew! Below is information regarding the film and how to contact me if interested. Synopsis: "The Blaires are just an average family going about their days like any other. Things have only ever been "normal" for them, until their father turns everything they know upside down. After coming home late from his new job one night, the once-kind Mr. Blaire begins to act very strange, and he has his eyes set on the rest of his family." This will be a roughly 20-minute horror film. Shooting will take place in Akron and be unpaid. Food will be provided and transport can also be provided if needed. Rehearsal and shooting should take place March 20th-24th. This may be extended to March 26th if necessary but shouldn’t be more than a week’s time total. Cast needed: Sam: 20, male. Leader of the brothers. Often a parental figure for his younger brothers. Derek: 18, male. Struggling with the pressures of life. Argumentative and stubborn. Isaac: 18, male. Kind but naive. Easily manipulated due to his overly trusting nature. Stuart: 40s, male. Father. His fatherly nature soon turns aggressive and violent. Sarah: 40s, female. Mother. Tries her best to keep the family together and happy.
