YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Millennial Theatre Company (MTC) is proud to announce their production of the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Avenue Q! Everyone's favorite puppet musical will be performing for 8 performances over two weekends at The Hopewell Theatre (702 Mahoning Ave. Youngstown, OH). Performance dates and times include Friday January 20 and Saturday January 21 at 7:30pm, Sunday January 22 at 2:00pm, Friday January 27 at 7:30pm, Saturday January 28 at 2:00pm and 7:30pm, and Sunday January 29 at 2:00pm and 7:30pm. Currently, the performances on Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21 are sold out. The laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates and their ever-elusive purpose in life. Although the show addresses humorous adult issues, it is similar to a beloved children's show; a place where puppets are friends, Monsters are good and life lessons are learned. Artistic Director Joe Asente said this is a show that is a perfect fit for MTC, “MTC has made a name for itself producing shows that have universal appeal, while addressing issues that are relevant for young adult audiences. This show, which parodies the educational children’s show Sesame Street, continues that trend by addressing issues that are pressing for today’s young adults, just as Sesame Street did for us when we were kids. Sesame Street taught us our ABCs and 123s, and Avenue Q teaches us about racism, what to do after college, love, finding your purpose in life, relationships, and perhaps even the need to clear your internet search history.” Asente states that this is a show that has been on MTC’s shortlist for some time, “While this show is light and fun, it has definitely been a challenge to bring to the stage. The show features 18 puppets, all hand-crafted by local puppet designer Lynn Ohle. We have been interested in doing this show for quite some time, but the puppets have always been daunting for us. When I met Lynn while doing Rocky Horror in 2021, she mentioned that she was a puppet maker, and I knew that was the excuse we have been waiting for to stage this show.” Working with puppets is not easy, and Asente said that doing so created quite a few new challenges for him and his actors, “I am very fortunate to have a talented core of actors who return, show after show. These actors know my process and my expectations, so there is a certain foundation that is already built when we begin a rehearsal process that usually makes things go a little bit smoother during rehearsals. However, with the addition of puppets, I had to go over every single basic rule of theatre because nothing was intuitive anymore.” Asente continued, “No one thinks about cheating out to the audience when they have a puppet in their hand. No one thinks about maintaining eye contact and sightlines when they have a puppet in their hand. We had to break down everything they have done instinctually for years and address it all individually before we could even begin to work on the actual mechanics of puppet operation. METHOD ACTING FOR TEENS: FEB 1 - FEB 22 (WEDNESDAYS 6-8PM) We provide our acting students with the opportunity to discover, nurture and explore their own uniqueness and merge that into the script to stand out on the set or on stage. First and foremost our goal is to develop the young actor's craft. The young actor develops a technique that he or she can take into any medium, be it stage, screen, TV, or film. The classes at our studio are centered around The Sanford Meisner Technique. Through the Meisner system, the actor becomes fearless and gains a strong confidence that can be applied to all areas of life. The young actor develops a love for the work, and with this, the ability to survive and work as an actor. SKETCH COMEDY WRITING: MARCH 7 - MARCH 28 (TUESDAYS 6-8PM) Live from Lakewood, it's sketch comedy writing! In this course we will cover different sketch formats, working in a writers room, pitching your ideas confidently, and revising a final script. This class is for kids and teens ages 12-17 who love to make people smile. Instructor Eric Swinderman studied at the world famous Second City and is an Emmy nominated TV and Film writer and director. Through his experiences working with various groups and shows, you'll learn the craft of sketch comedy writing and "what makes something funny." Beck Center for the Arts Youth Theater, one of the oldest continuously running Youth Theaters in the country, will be holding auditions on February 4 and 5, 2023 for their final production in their 74th season. ONCE UPON A MATTRESS Music by Mary Rodgers Lyrics by Marshall Barer Book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer Direction and Choreography by Sarah Clare Musical Direction by Heidi Herczeg In this humorous adaptation of the 1835 Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea", the Queen decreed no couples can marry until her son, Prince Dauntless, finds a bride. Princesses came from far and wide to win the hand of the prince, but none could pass the impossible tests given to them by the Queen. Will the “shy” Princess Winnifred be able to pass the Queen’s sensitivity test, and marry her prince? Once Upon A Mattress is a delightful musical that is sure to delight the whole family. When they arrive the charade begins. The drinks flow and suddenly inhibitions melt. It becomes clear that Martha is determined to seduce the young professor, and George couldn’t care less. But underneath the edgy banter, which is crossfired between both couples, lurks an undercurrent of tragedy and despair. George and Martha’s inhuman bitterness toward one another is provoked by the enormous personal sadness that they have pledged to keep to themselves: a secret that has seemingly been the foundation for their relationship. In the end, the mystery in which the distressed George and Martha have taken refuge is exposed, once and for all revealing the degrading mess they have made of their lives. Casting 2 women for MISS COURAGEOUS: WOMEN OF SCIENCE

Spark Theatre Company is seeking 2 additional performers for its spring production, MISS COURAGEOUS: WOMEN OF SCIENCE as part of our touring show program. These productions usually have 1 public performance but primarily travel throughout NE Ohio to schools as assemblies for approximately 15 performances. Actors do not need to be available EVERY day throughout the touring timeline, but should have general availability during school days and/or flexibility in their schedules. Actors receive a stipend beginning at $500 and are reimbursed for travel to schools at the IRS rate of $0.58/mile. Miss Courageous: Women of Science By Joanna Halpert Kraus Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman doctor in the United States with a medical degree, and Marie Curie, discoverer of radium, helped make possible today's scientific community where discovery knows no gender. This show invites students to share their obstacles and fight the prejudices against them before savoring their triumphs.
