The Western Reserve Playhouse presents: “WIT” A Dramatic Comedy by Margaret Edson Directed by Dawn Sniadak-Yamokoski Show Dates: May 20th through June 4th, 2022 SYNOPSIS: Vivian Bearing, Ph.D., a renowned professor of English who has spent years studying and teaching the brilliant and difficult metaphysical sonnets of John Donne, has been diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. Her approach to the study of Donne: aggressively probing, intensely rational. But during the course of her illness—and her stint as a prize patient in an experimental chemotherapy program at a major teaching hospital—Vivian comes to reassess her life and her work with a profundity and humor that are transformative both for her and the audience. Sara Bareilles’ hit musical *Waitress* has returned to Playhouse Square for an extended run in the close confines of the Hanna Theatre. The show is based on the 2007 motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly with a book by Jessie Nelson, music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, choreography by Lorin Latarro and direction by Diane Paulus. In this case, “a new look” does not mean improved. The Hanna’s thrust stage has been removed and the theater’s excellent acoustical properties are buried under amplification. The vocalists and the compact onstage band, conducted by Lilli Wosk, often overwhelmed the space. What is usually an advantage in the Hanna (proximity of every seat to the stage) has become a liability. The Pandemic has caused increased awareness and manifestation of problems resulting from such life issues as illness, isolation, loss of income, family, friends, and other major losses, resulting in mental health problems which need to be addressed and solved in non-clinical ways. *Project.* One component of the “Wake Up to Healing Arts” project is a staged reading of four short scripts by Cleveland-area playwrights – “Can There Be Justice For TJ?” by Evonne Fields-Gould, “Recrowning King” by Ife-Gail Young, “That Guy” by Peter Anthony Fields, and “Writing Was My Muse” by Rosalind Royce. Each play will receive three – four rehearsals. It’s a faraway age of hope and inclusivity; in other words, it’s 2015. When a tight-knit circle of married gays and lesbians – comfy in the new mainstream – sees themselves through the eyes of their rakish transgender pal, it’s clear that the march toward progress is anything but unified. With stinging satire and acute compassion, Jordan Harrison’s pointed comedy charts the breakdown of empathy that happens when we think our rights are secure, revealing conservative hearts where you’d least expect.
