*Beck Center in Lakewood will hold auditions for the 2015/16 Season Opener "The Spitfire Grill" on Monday, July 13th and Tuesday July 14th.* *Auditions will be by appointment which can be made by calling the Beck Center Box* *Office at 216-521-2540 <216-521-2540> during regular business hours (9AM to 8PM most days)* *Directed by Beck Center veteran Bill Roudebush, "The Spitfire Grill (based on a 1996 movie by the same name) weaves a beautiful story about a young female parolee who relocates to a small Wisconsin town seemingly on its last legs, and the transformations that occur with her presence.* *USA Today wrote "An Abundance of warmth, spirit, and goodwill!...Some of the most engaging and instantly infectious melodies I've heard in an original musical in some time." * *And from The New York Times---"A soul satisfying work of theatrical resourcefulness. A compelling story that flows with grace and carries the rush of anticipation. The story moves, the characters have many dimensions and their transformations are plausible and moving. The musical is freeing. It is penetrated by honesty and it glows."* *"The Spitfire Grill" features 7 actor/singers (3 Men and 4 Women). The role of Hannah has been cast (Lenne Snively), but the remaining 6 roles are open. One AEA contract remains for this production. All non-union actors 18 and over receive a stipend for their participation.* *ROLES* *Percy Talbot---20-something. Attractive, if a bit rough-edged, her face declares the strength of her youth and a sadness beyond her years. Her accent has a southern Appalachian cadence. Strong folk/country belt to "D" with some head voice required.* *Hannah Ferguson---(CAST)* *Shelby Thorpe---Mid 30's. A plain and soft-faced creature with a shy, almost ethereal manner. Shimmering folk soprano with strong high belt to "D".* *Caleb Thorpe--- Early 40's. Out-of-work foreman of the stone quarry. Frustrated working man clinging to the past. Solid folk/rock voice with an edge (top "G")* *Sheriff Joe Sutter--- Mid to Late 20's. A young small-town policeman with an appealing intensity and a restless nature. Strong folk tenor to a "G" (touches an "A")* *Effy Krayneck--- 50's. Postmistress and busybody, a woman with narrow eyes and a sour tongue. Solid singer in mezzo/alto chest range. Carries close harmonies.* *The Visitor--- Mid 40's. Male. A mysterious figure who never speaks. Requires an actor with powerful eyes and a strong sense of his body. {This is obviously a non-singing role. If you have interest in this role only please do NOT sign up for an appointment. Instead, please reply to this e-mail, and a different appointment time will be scheduled for you}* *Audition Preparation* *Please prepare a single 90 second musical selection that shows off your voice. Legit Broadway selections are fine, as are bluegrass or country influenced choices. Please DO bring sheet music in your key. An accompanist will be provided. Barnum. The Chagrin Valley Little Theatre’s production of BARNUM explores the irrepressible imagination and dreams behind the man and his larger-than-life legend. The musical was created by composer Cy Coleman with lyricist Michael Stewart and playwright Mark Bramble. CVLT's production of BARNUM opens July 17 with 13 weekend performances through Aug. 15, including shows at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and three Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. on July 26, Aug. 2 and Aug. 9. Before the formation of Barnum and Bailey’s Greatest Show on Earth, Phineas Taylor Barnum (Rob Albrecht) was already grooming to be one of the greatest showmen on Earth. BARNUM tells the story of how, despite the wishes of his wife "Chairy" (Beth Cubbison), P.T. Barnum pursues a life in the circus business. He tours with exotic attractions such as the "oldest woman alive" (Sally Morris), the tiniest man, known as Tom Thumb (Quinn Dawson), a bearded lady (Amanda Litherland), a blues singer (Elyse Mulvaney) and ringmaster (Tom Mulvaney). As the story unfolds, Barnum finds his attentions straying toward the glamorous Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind (Alison Arko), and through the toe-tapping music of Tony Award winner Cy Coleman (/City of Angels, Will Rogers Follies, Sweet Charity/), audiences follow Barnum's passions both under and outside the big top. The play proceeds up to his collaboration with fellow circus owner James Anthony Bailey to form the organization that would be synonymous with "circus" from then on. “We really wanted to create a circus atmosphere to give our audience the circus experience,” explains Director Michael Rogan. “It’s really two shows merged together, a circus and a musical. It’s the most complicated show I’ve done.” Creating a circus atmosphere, CVLT's stage will soar with acrobats, stilt-walkers, jugglers, unicyclists (played by Drew Albrecht, Ella and Ricarda Harnischmacher of Hudson, Blake and Jillian Parhamovich of Solon) and clowns (Bennett Mulvaney of Aurora, Corey Hughes of Kent, Mim Goloboff of Mayfield Heights, and Joey Cayabyab of Parma). Kristen Johnson serves as Musical Director and Pamela LaForce is Choreographer. The show is produced by Julia Wolff and Stage Managed by Helen Rizi. Harold Crawford provides the colorful costumes. Show times are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights, but plan to arrive about 30 minutes early to take in the live side show featuring unicyclists and the bearded lady in front of the theater, located at 40 River Street in Chagrin Falls.
