Time has not been kind to ‘Same Time, Next Year’ Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics While clearly not Actors’ Summit’s intention, it is impossible to sit through Bernard Slade’s “Same Time, Next Year” and not feel as if you’ve just binge-watched vintage sitcoms on Nick at Nite. This should come as no surprise considering that the playwright spent 17 years as a writer for network television before penning this play, his first, in 1975. Beneath his imposing presence and commanding nature lurks a harried single father who will do anything to protect his daughters. Experience has taught him to have a strong distrust of humans. Ursula: The banished Sea Witch and sister of King Triton. She will use whatever method necessary to steal the kingdom and claim it as her own. Malevolent, calculating and deceptive. Sebastian: A crab and advisor to King Triton. A musical virtuoso who is tasked with taking care of the rebellious Ariel. He is paranoid about anything happening to her and yet can’t bring himself to stand in her way. Born with the sounds of calypso ringing in his ears. Prince Eric: Heir to the throne, Eric is a handsome, affable lad with a buoyant, adventurous nature who has no interest in becoming king. After Ariel saves his life, he becomes obsessed with finding her and hearing her voice once more. Scuttle: Should play up the unpredictibility and dynamics, he is benevolent; strong character actor and strong dancer; tap dancing a plus. Strong character voice; an eccentric seagull and friend of Ariel’s; a self-proclaimed human expert, though in reality he knows very little and is often making up words. Flounder: 12-15 teenage boy; a fish and smitten with Ariel, his best friend. Rambunctious but cautious, fearful of the dangers that lurk in and above the water. Chef Louis: The French palace chef. A diabolical, culinary perfectionist with an affinity for blades and seafood in particular. Grimsby: lanky and self-proclaimed; excellent comic actor. Role is almost talk-sung. Prince Eric’s faithful servant, right hand man, and friend; while he is earnest, he is also gentle and clumsy; serves as the prince’s moral compass and almost worships Eric. Explore all aspects of the theatre with other teens who love the stage as much as you do! My Mercury is the arts camp that is more than a traditional summer camp. Designed for students 13-19, the program is a comprehensive, one-week 9:00am-4:00pm intensive July 11 through July 16, 2016, in which students get a chance to hone their skills in a fast-paced, creative environment. Each student will not only STAR onstage in the production, but also will also contribute to the direction, choreography, set, lighting and costume design of the production. Students will be assigned a mentor from the Mercury Theatre Company 2016 Staff and will work as assistants on a specific “behind-the-scenes” area of their interest. My Mercury! is designed to instill in aspiring thespians a deeper understanding about producing and participating in a first-class musical with working professionals. Tuition for My Mercury! is $125.00 and space is limited. All interested campers must audition for placement. Tuition includes one ticket for the teen night of each musical. Scripts will only be handed out at the first teen night for Beauty and the Beast (June 16th). Each of the teen nights will incorporate team building as well as parties. The Gates Mills Players is looking for Tech help for our upcoming play of "Harvey". Production date: March 11 thru March 26 weekends. We need 2 people. A person able to run a simple light board and a sound tech that can help with sound effects, sound ques and run the sound board. Light Board Operator: Need to be at rehearsals, Tech Sunday and all performances. We are doing 8 performances. Need to be able to help set up lighting fixtures and plan out lighting ques with director and crew. Sound Board Tech: Need to be at rehearsals, Tech Sunday and all performances. We are doing 8 performances. Will work with current sound tech to plan out sound ques, sound effects, run the show and work with stage manager.
