Valerie is the owner of the local swing dance company Get Hep Swing. Valerie travels all over the world teaching a variety of forms of swing dance but she is only at Tomo’s giving free dance lessons once every week. :) We will begin with Jitterbug but will occasionally offer lessons in Lindy, Balboa, and Charleston. These special topic lessons will be announced in advance. The 3/17 lesson is Lindy! Lindy is the original form of swing dancing that began in the ballrooms of Harlem in the late 1920s/early 1930s. DJ music from 8-11. Everything will be swinging on the second floor. Come early for a meal and a drink. There are many parking lots nearby as well as street parking. There is no need to have previous dance experience or bring a dance partner. We rotate partners during the dance lesson. Actors’ Summit’s ‘Chapatti’ Excellent *West Side Leader **By David Ritchey* Dogs and cats usually aren't the subject of stage plays. However, “Chapatti,” which is being performed by Actors’ Summit Theater through March 13, is different. Chapatti is the name of a dog. The cast of this 90-minute one-act play brings one dog and about 16 cats to life on the Actors’ Summit’s stage at Greystone Hall. “Chapatti” deals with two lonely people, Dan (Neil Thackaberry) and Betty (Anne McEvoy). Their pets, like glue, seem to hold their fragile lives together — Dan has Chapatti and Anne has about 16 cats. Dan realizes he needs more than his dog to make his life complete. Unfortunately, he sees no opportunity to live a fulfilling life. He plans to give Chapatti away and kill himself. Anne can’t take the dog; she has too many cats to care for. As Dan and Anne deal with their pets they discover each other. “Chapatti” isn’t a silly romance. Playwright Christian O’Reilly lives in Ireland and writes about his countrymen. “Chapatti” is a fine script, which is set in Dublin. This script works on several levels and the audience should make an effort to enjoy this production on its various levels. Often the characters speak directly to the audience and then move back to their stage persona — talking to their pets, talking to themselves, and in jewel-like moments, speaking to each other. Forget the pets for a few moments. McEvoy and Thackaberry are marvelous performers and they’re at the top of their skills in this production. The quality production is due to the playwright’s fine script and Brian Zoldessy’s strong direction. Zoldessy helped his performers strip away artifice and to honestly and directly reveal their characters’ soul-searing loneliness. Of course, we’re honored with two excellent performers. The bare bones set (two chairs and two small tables) reflect the bareness of Dan’s and Anne’s lives. The set design and construction by Perry Catalano and Fred Sellers is perfect for this script and Greystone Hall. This production of “Chapatti” is excellent. I enjoyed watching the story unfold in the hands of two actors who made every line meaningful. This production should not be missed. It is good to see Thackaberry come out of retirement and take the stage again.

"The Star on My Heart" Friday, March 11 & Saturday, March 12 @ 8:15pm Tickets $10.00 adults - $5.00 Students / Children The Star on My Heart is an original play based on Holocaust survivor Inge Auerbacher's memoirs, adapted and directed by Angela Miloro-Hansen. In 2013 Angela won OCTA awards for a show she directed at Geauga Lyric Theater called I Never Saw Another Butterfly, by Celeste Raspanti. It told the story of the children imprisoned in the Theresienstadt (Terezin) concentration camp near Prague. Of fifteen thousand children who passed through Terezin, it is believed that approximately one hundred survived. Then GLTG Executive director Chris Cipriani made contact with one of these child survivors, Inge Auerbacher. Inge inspired the cast with a telephone conversation on opening night and a relationship with Dr. Auerbacher evolved. Inge expressed a desire to have her story staged, and Angela Miloro-Hansen was asked to author the script. Writer/Director Miloro-Hansen has been active in theater since 1999, and is a 2010 Hiram College graduate. She directs, teaches and acts on a regular basis and serves as the Educational Outreach Coordinator for Geauga Lyric Theater in Chardon, Ohio. Chris Cipriani, now Director of Programming at Shore Cultural Centre in Euclid, is serving as the project and educational outreach coordinator. After two years of collaboration, The Star on My Heart premiered in November 2015. It tells of Inge's experiences during the war in Terezin, and her survival and recovery in New York City, where she still lives today. After liberation, Inge came to America and spent two years in a tuberculosis hospital. She began high school with only one year of schooling under her belt, and graduated in three years. Inge worked as a chemist for 38 years. She now travels and speaks on the topics of tolerance, the Holocaust and human rights. PLAYWRIGHTS LOCAL 4181 ANNOUNCES OPEN SUBMISSIONS OF ONE-ACT AND FULL-LENGTH PLAYS Works for Fall 2016 - Spring 2017 programs accepted through May 15, 2016 Cleveland, OH; March 7, 2016 Playwrights Local 4181 announces its first open submission period, inviting residents of Northeast Ohio to submit one-act and full-length plays. All works will be considered for the company’s 2nd Annual Cleveland Playwrights Festival in late 2016, and for additional programs including its developmental Play Lab in early 2017. The deadline for entry is May 15, 2016. Early submissions are encouraged. “As a playwrights’ center, it’s important to us that we’re accessible to all dramatic writers in the area,” said David Todd, Artistic Director of Playwrights Local. “An open call seemed the best way of ensuring that.” All plays that are original and unproduced will be accepted, as will small-scale musicals and one-person shows. There will be no fee for submitting. “Making this year’s submissions free is another way of extending our range of connections,” Todd said. “It also simplifies the application process for the playwrights.” Submissions will be accepted from playwrights age 18 or older who are permanent residents of Cuyahoga and its bordering counties.
