Mercury Theatre’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ flounders Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics As tempting as it is for local theaters to stage adaptations of animated Disney films, it is a near-impossible uphill climb to capture the cinematic majesty of the movies and the big-budgeted spectacle of the Broadway productions. Some theaters wisely opt to re-envision the work in the hope that simplification and creativity can capture the heart of the original. Re-envisioning happens to be Mercury Theatre’s strong suit, best seen in this season’s marvelous “Finnian’s Rainbow” and a recent, ingenious production of “Peter Pan: The Musical Adventure.” But for its current production of “The Little Mermaid” – based on the 1989 Disney film that is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story about a young mermaid who dreams of the world above the sea and gives up her voice to find love – director Pierre-Jacques Brault has opted for opulence. Students entering this class should choose a poem, monologue, vocal music selection or dance audition piece in advance. Students will learn about the audition process and receive coaching on an audition piece. The class will build skills in slating, audition process, relaxation techniques, character development and emotional expression. Students will receive constructive feedback on their work. TONIGHT'S PERFORMANCE OF DANCING WHEELS AT CAIN PARK CANCELLED DUE TO POWER OUTAGE The Dancing Wheels concert scheduled for 8pm on 8/12 in the Evans Amphitheater has been cancelled due to the continuing power outage. Refunds are available at the point of purchase. Tickets purchased at the Cain Park Ticket Office need to be returned there for the refund. Purchases made with a credit card can be refunded when the tickets are returned. If payment was by cash or check, a form needs to be filled out and processed through the City's Finance Office, who will then issue a refund check that will be mailed to the purchaser.
