Renowned New York Talent Scout Peter Sklar knows a thing or two about helping aspiring child stars achieve success. His list of protégés includes Sarah Jessica Parker, Reese Witherspoon, and Mischa Barton, to name a few, along with many current and former Broadway, TV, and film actors, singers and dancers. Reality shows like American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance have springboarded some of the most talented kids in the nation into super stardom. But with so much available talent, what really sets one kid apart from another? According to Sklar, any career- in or out of the arts- is about two things: self-image and health. He argues that these qualities outweigh looks, training, connections, and even talent, and apply universally. In “The Sklar Principle", a lecture for students and their parents on Wednesday, September 21st 7:00 PM at The Garfield Heights Center for the Performing Arts in Garfield Heights, Ohio, Sklar will explain why his views are in synch with the needs of top New York and Hollywood agents and casting directors, as well as college admission boards, and job interviewers in virtually all fields. “The people who sit behind the table are trying to decide two things: do they like you, and do they believe you,” Sklar tells young audiences. “If you don’t feel good mentally and physically, you won’t open up and show us who you really are. When that happens- no matter how smart you are, or what you’ve achieved, or what you look like- we’ve already lost interest.” Alluding to a dramatic rise in self-destructive behavior, such as smoking, drinking, drugs, and eating disorders among so-called “happy” teens, Sklar marvels at how often these activities secretly co-exist with good grades, good behavior, and virtually every other outward sign of stability. “The kids I interview are the smartest and most talented- the highest achievers in the nation,” proclaims Sklar. “And they’re too often the most unhappy, unhealthy, and least employable.” Sklar boasts an Ivy League pedigree, (Masters Degree in Education from Harvard University), formal training in concert piano, (Juilliard School of Music), and four decades of professional experience. He’s been the subject of multiple feature-length articles in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Kansas City Star and numerous others, was interviewed on E! True Hollywood Story, appeared as a guest expert on Donahue, and has had his work presented on the Bravo Channel, Good Morning America, and every major national television network. He’s currently developing an original musical based on his experiences entitled “The Kid Who Played the Palace”, to be directed by William Martin, (Broadway’s “The Lieutenant”, recipient of five Tony Award nominations). “The Sklar Principle" is open to teenagers, young adults, older children, and parents. Motive For Murder is looking for actors to fill out their talent pool for the upcoming murder mystery season and beyond. This is less community theater and more occasional part-time work. We are currently casting the following show dates: OCTOBER 22 in LOUDONVILLE TALBOT: male; age 35-45; a tortured soul; morose and brooding but with a tendency for violent outbursts; think Chaney Jr. YGOR: male; unspecified age range; a hunchback; prefer a petite actor under 5' 6". DECEMBER 17 in LOUDONVILLE DISGRUNTLED FEMALE EMPLOYEE; 20's -early 30's; somewhat sexy tomboy and a bit of a vixen STORYTELLER: non-gender specific; no specific age; should like chocolate and/or candy and be good with treating adults like children; has a bit of a 1940's flair; should know how to hold book. FEMALE AGENT: no specific age; typical Hollywood agent Ideal candidates should have theater experience, reliable transportation, and the ability to ad-lib comfortably in character. Come and join us! You'll really enjoy the band! You may even want to get up and dance! :) The cost of the dance is $12 per person or $10 for students and seniors with a valid ID. If you are brand new to the Get Hep Swing dances you may attend for only $5 your first time. Be sure to arrive in time to take part in the easy jitterbug lesson from 8pm to 9pm. Immediately after the lesson, Keith Jones and The Makeshifts will kick off an awesome night of music and swing dancing until 12am. High energy 1950's rock and roll. Done the right way. Keith Jones and the Makeshifts are a 1950's rock and roll/rockabilly band that leans toward the style of Bill Haley, but also plays music by Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, and more. Keith Jones and the Makeshifts dedicate themselves to not only the look and songs of the 1950's, but the showmanship, energy and subtle uniqueness of the 50's sound. Everyone is welcome to come and have fun with us at the swing dance. There is no need to have previous dance experience or a dance partner. Most people dress casually. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2016 Great Lakes Theater ANNOUNCES AUDITIONS FOR CLASSICS ON TOUR PRODUCTION THE JABBERWOCKY Great Lakes Theater (GLT) announces open auditions for non-equity actors for the Classics On Tour production THE JABBERWOCKY, a play for young audiences, written by Dakotah Brown, Noah Moody and Chad Shohet, and based on the classic poem by Lewis Carroll. THE JABBERWOCKY will tour to 50 community venues in northern Ohio between February 21 and March 24, 2016, Tuesdays through Sundays, often two performances daily. The play will be directed by GLT Director of Educational Programming Lisa Ortenzi. Synopsis: Two students - Dodgson and Steve - band together after being bullied by classmates. To avoid their tormentors, the students follow a secret map and escape to the Tulgey Wood - where they meet a king who begs them to save his people from the fearsome Jabberwocky! Meet colorful characters like Cheshire Cat, JubJub Bird, Bandersnatch, and a family of Momeraths as this unlikely but dynamic duo journeys to save a kingdom. Along the way, they find the courage to defeat the Jabberwocky...and apply the lessons learned to face their fears back home. Eligibility: Those auditioning should bring a headshot and resume and prepare two contrasting monologues. Total audition time should not exceed three minutes. Familiarity with Lewis Carrolls original poem The Jabberwocky is helpful but not required. Applicants must have a driver license and a reliable automobile. A background check will also be required. Audition slots are available on Monday, September 26, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Audition sessions will take place in a Playhouse Square Rehearsal Hall, 1650 Chester Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44114. Callbacks will be held Tuesday, September 27. Available Roles: Needed are four ensemble performers (age range: 20s 30s) to portray a dozen characters and to operate puppets.
