The Little Mermaid Jr. Auditions! In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, longs to leave her ocean home – and her fins – behind and live in the world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking. Artistic direction for Olmsted Performing Arts by Angela Boehm, musical direction by Michelle Cha, and choreography by Kaylea Kudlaty. Auditions for *Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR.* will be held on Sunday, January 22 beginning at 9:00 AM at Olmsted Performing Arts. Dance auditions will be held at 12:30 PM and are mandatory for all auditionees. If you leave after your individual audition time, plan to arrive dressed for dance (no jeans permitted) at about 12:15 PM to warm up. Call-backs for selected actors will be held at 2:00 PM. Auditions are open for all actors ages 5–18. Please have your child come prepared to sing 16 measures. Bring clearly marked sheet music for our accompanist. What were they thinking: When everything old is new again Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, International Association of Theatre Critics “Don't throw the past away You might need it some rainy day” ~ From “Everything Old is New Again,” 1974 Song by Peter Allen and Carole Bayer Sager There were times early in the last century when ingenuity embraced the visual and performing arts, enhanced their artistry and expanded their audience. Those days are here again, but to curiously mixed reviews. ◊◊ In the early-1920s, in order to fill the silence before talkies and bring out the emotion of what was being said but needed to be read, many movie theaters employed a live pianist, organist or small orchestra to accompany their films. In the spirit of this act of creative enrichment, but on steroids, the December installment of the “At the Movies” series at Severance Hall offered a screening of Frank Capra’s monochromatic classic “It’s A Wonderful Life” with a live symphonic performance of the film’s original underscoring by the world-class Cleveland Orchestra. Included were 40 minutes of found music written by composer Dimitri Tiomkin that were cut from the original release of the movie. The Cleveland Orchestra offered a richer and more vibrant experience than Frank Capra could have ever have imagined or that any audience ever encountered in the 70 years since the film’s release. And yet, there were those in attendance who felt that the live accompaniment was overkill and who found that the now-somber underscoring of assorted scenes detracted from the light and happy feeling we’ve come to expect from this holiday staple. Bowieoke honors the genius and one year passing of David Bowie - Sat Jan 7 - Musica Vanity Crash will host Bowieoke, a diverse entertaining event featuring a multi-media Bowie retrospect, bands, solo artists, and audience karaoke, all singing Bowie songs and paying tribute to David Bowie's genius. Saturday, January 7 at 8:00 p.m. the celebration begins at Musica. Convergence-continuum will be holding auditions for the NEOMFA Playwrights Festival this Friday (Jan. 6) at 7:30 pm and Saturday (Jan. 7) at 11:00 am at the Liminis Theater, 2438 Scranton Rd, Cleveland 44113. You can come either date. Or both if you like. But please be here at the beginning of the audition period (i.e. at either 7:30 or 11:00.) No advance preparation is required. You will be reading in groups from the scripts. There will be two full-length plays this year. The first one goes up Feb 9, 10 and 11. The second will take the stage on Feb 16, 17 and 18. Read-throughs and rehearsals will begin as soon as possible after casting. We'll need a total of 11 actors (6-7 male, 4-5 female) of various ages, races, shapes and sizes. Play 1: _The Darkness _by Katie Wallace, Renee Schilling and Rob Daniels. 2m, 2f (Feb 9-11), directed by Jonathan Wilhelm. Play 2: _Sexual Politics _by Jaclyn Cifranic. 4 or 5 m, 3 or 4f (Feb 16-18), directed by Geoffrey Hoffman. FYI for those of you haven't participated before. The rehearsal period is short and intensive, and can get crazy and fun as you workshop and help shape a new play.
