Theater in the Circle is proud to announce our extraordinary cast for The Gift of the Magi, opening in Judson Manor Ballroom, Dec. 14, 2017. Meg Martinez and Robert Kowalewski have the beautiful voices and theatrical skills to bring this treasured holiday favorite to life for Theatre in the Circle. O. Henry wrote “The Gift of the Magi” for his New York World column in December of 1905. The legendary Magi of the title brought precious gifts to an unknown babe in a manger. O. Henry felt the Magi typified gift-giving at its finest and purest form. The story of the love and selflessness of Della and Jim has have endured for 112 years and was set to a beautiful musical score for piano, cello, harp and flute by Peter Ekstrom for Actors Theatre of Louisville in 1981. The story tells of a young, impoverished couple who can barely pay the rent, but love each other so much that they each sell they’re most cherished possession for the sake of their beloved. Ekstrom was born in Cleveland and grew up in nearby Painesville, Ohio. Mr. Ekstrom and Theatre in the Circle’s artistic director, Bill Corcoran, both have connections with the Actors Theatre of Lousville, still considered one of the finest regional theaters in the US. Mr. Corcoran periodically worked on Actors’ stages as pianist, arranger and musical director. Visual Arts Instructor –Manga/Cartooning (Part-Time, Paid) Beck Center for the Arts, Lakewood, Ohio Beck Center’s Visual Arts Education program seeks a dynamic teaching artist to lead manga and cartooning classes during the fall semester with the possibility of extending the teaching opportunity into future semesters. Classes to be taught this fall are Manga-style Cartooning (Beginner and Advanced), and possibly Cartooning & Visual Storytelling. Through our cartooning classes, students hone their drawing skills, cultivate their own individual style, tell stories visually, and at the completion of the course bring home their own printed comics. The ideal candidate will be an experienced cartooning artist with a proven ability to work with children as well as adults. Candidates should possess a strong focus in drawing fundamentals and have familiarity with Japanese styles and manga. Qualifications: A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree in the art form. BA or MA in visual arts education preferred. Experience as a teacher in a school classroom and/or a community based program preferred. An articulate customer service oriented individual who works well with students, families, and colleagues. Excellent organizational skills with ability to be prepared to lead weekly classes that are educational with developmentally and age appropriate content. Hiring contingent upon passing a background check. Hours: Begins November 6 and runs through January 20 with opportunity to continue through the school-year. Review: "Blue Moon" A Musical Love Story

I had the pleasure of attending the premier production of an original musical “Blue Moon” at Theatre 8:15 in Green. Theatre 8:15 is an historic building housing an intimate stage. “Blue Moon” is the proud creation of playwright, Richard Roman, who wrote the lyrics for the 14 musical numbers in the show to the music of composer, Denis Couture. The concept of the musical love story began with the creation of a touching song “As We Danced” and grew from there. The whole theme of the musical is one’s belief in fate or luck in changing the course of someone’s life. Fate is played by Carrie Miller who has a full and soulful voice and hauntingly carries the show from beginning to end. Anna and Alek, the young lovers are played by Reese Mangan and Cowen Swift. The two blend their voices in many duets throughout the show. Anna displays a beautiful innocence and Alex, an awkward shyness. Nicole Graham plays a doting matchmaking friend and lends a beautiful voice to the show. Rosa’s bright red wig, however, was slightly distracting. In fact, I question the use of wigs on Anna and Tameron. The use of wigs is something that should be used only to add to the depth of the show, and in this case, were merely distracting. Some comic relief was added by Adam Leventhal in the role of Troy, Alek’s advice-giving friend. Susan Rusinoff lovingly filled the role of Anna’s mother who only wanted her daughter to find the love and happiness that she once had. The ensemble was filled with the voices of Caitlin Allshouse, Jordan Meeker, Carson Coombs and Jaden Haller who were in various scenes and musical numbers throughout the show. The show got bogged down by somewhat long and clumsy scene changes and some of the video pictures were unnecessary and disruptive. Some of these problems may get worked out as the show matures from opening night glitches. The show was directed by Dawna Kornick. The show runs Fridays and Saturdays through October 14th, so don’t let the click of a clock let you miss this new musical with meaningful lyrics and enchanting music. Production Run Dates: March 9th through March 25th Synopsis: Amazingly, two Rock and Roll legends, Mama Cass and Keith Moon, both died at age of 32 in the same London flat about four years apart in the mid-1970's. MAMA / MOON is the story of the last few hours in each of their lives. It's a play about Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll. But also about the whirlwind of celebrity and the all too often side affects of loneliness and addiction on the road to Redemption. In the first half of MAMA / MOON, Mama Cass Elliot, formerly of The Mamas and The Papas, and fresh off a career-capping, two week, sold out, solo engagement at the London Palladium, tries to complete her comeback by enticing a young admirer into becoming the most meaningful relationship in her life. In the second half of MAMA / MOON, Keith Moon, the innovative and wildly eccentric and erratic drummer for the rock band The Who, tries desperately, despite his hell-raising ways, to hold on to his job, his sanity and his longtime girlfriend, before time runs out. In the end, Keith and Cass become closer friends than anyone could imagine.
