Lakewood Chapter Celebrates 100th Anniversary of Woman's Suffrage Lakewood, Ohio. October, 2017 The Lakewood Chapter of the League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland will celebrate the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in Lakewood on Wednesday, November 15 from 7:00PM to 9:00PM at the Woman's Pavilion in Lakewood Park. The 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which gave women the right to vote, was ratified in 1920. However, progressive thinking in Lakewood allowed women the right to vote 3 years before the 19th Amendment was ratified. Activists in Lakewood, both male and female, knocked on doors and campaigned tirelessly for the right of women in Lakewood to vote in local elections. The Charter Amendment giving women the right to vote in municipal elections was passed on November 6, 1917. East Cleveland and Columbus had also voted for women's suffrage, after enough registered voters signatures were obtained to put the issue on the ballot by petition. But, in Lakewood, it was the members of City Council, all men, who placed the issue on the ballot. According to an article in the Lakewood Press, "Lakewood was the first city in Cuyahoga County to extend voluntarily the right of equal suffrage." This past summer, members of the Lakewood Chapter of the League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland carefully researched the history of this action. They discovered a cast of fascinating characters whose commitment to woman's right to vote in local elections was unbreakable. The Kaiser lives in a secluded mansion in The Netherlands and as Germany is taking over Holland, the country's authorities are concerned that Dutch spies may be watching the Kaiser. As Brandt begins to infiltrate the Kaiser's life in search of clues, he finds himself drawn into an unexpected and passionate romance with Mieke, one of the Kaiser's maids whom Brandt soon discovers is secretly Jewish. LCCC Theatre Program Presents “Buried Child” Lorain County Community College ‘s Theatre Program presents “Buried Child” at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 16, 17 and 18 at the Stocker Arts Center in the Cirigliano Studio Theatre. The production is being directed by Terence Cranendonk. The powerful and brilliant Pulitzer Prize winning play by Sam Shepard probes deep into the disintegration of the American Dream. The play is set in a squalid farm home occupied by a family filled with suppressed violence and an unease born of deep-seated unhappiness. The characters are a ranting alcoholic grandfather; a sanctimonious grandmother who goes on drinking bouts with the local minister; and their sons, Tilden, an All-American footballer now a hulking semi-idiot; and Bradley, who has lost one leg to a chain saw. Into their midst comes Vince, a grandson none of them recognizes or remembers, and his girlfriend, Shelly, who cannot comprehend the madness to which she is suddenly introduced. The family harbors a dark secret—years earlier the grandfather, Dodge, had buried an unwanted newborn baby in an undisclosed spot, creating a cloud of guilt which is dispelled only when Tilden unearths the child's mummified remains and carries it upstairs to his mother. His act purges the family, at last, of its infamy and suggests the perhaps slim possibility of a new beginning under Vince, whose estrangement from the others has spared him the taint of their sin. Weathervane Playhouse to present Jane Martin's Talking With... 11 stories from 11 women set to grace the Dietz Stage AKRON - Weathervane Playhouse presents the first Dietz Theater production of the season as Jane Martin's iconic monologue play Talking With... is set to run November 2 - 12 in Weathervane's intimate Dietz Theater. Show times are Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. There is also a single Saturday matinee performance on November 11 at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $10- $22 and are available by calling the box office at 330-836-2626 or by going to www.weathervanplayhouse.com<http://www.weathervanplayhouse.com> Talking With... is a play made up of monologues, each eight to ten minutes long and featuring a different female character who talks about their life and personal ordeals. These idiosyncratic characters amuse, move, frighten, and speak from the depths of their souls. They include a baton twirler, a fundamentalist snake handler, an ex-rodeo rider and an actress willing to go to any length to get a job. Many of the monologues are touching, some are intensely emotional, and a couple are even comical. All of the pieces, however, show how the varied experiences and events in one's life affect who we are as humans. These extraordinary monologues received a standing ovation when they premiered at The Actors Theatre of Louisville and won the 1982 American Theatre Critics Association Award for Best Regional Play. Jane Martin, a Kentuckian, first came to national attention for Talking With..., a collection of monologues premiering in Actors Theatre of Louisville's 1982 Humana Festival of New American Plays. Since its New York premiere at Manhattan Theatre Club in 1982, Talking With... has been performed around the world, winning the Best Foreign Play of the Year Award in Germany from Theatre Heute magazine. Her other work includes: Vital Signs, Cementville, Keely And Du (Pulitzer Prize nominee; 1994 American Theatre Critics Association Best New Play Award), Jack And Jill (1997 American Theatre Critics Association Best New Play Award), Anton In Show Business (2001 American Theatre Critics/Steinberg Principal Citation), Mr. Bundy, and Flaming Guns Of The Purple Sage. Good Boys premiered at Guthrie Theater in 2002. Flags was co-produced by Guthrie Theater and Mixed Blood in 2004, and her most recent work, Sez She, premiered at Illusion Theatre in April 2006. Weathervane's production of Talking With... includes performances by a kitten named Pongo courtesy of Paws and Prayers and a ball python named Bedford courtesy of The Herps Alive Foundation.
