My $30,000 acting mistake

Years ago I did a little web video explaining why people should get a 212 area code for their business. I still remember this shoot. I had a little video demo posted online for months that I had actually totally forgotten about it until one day I got a call from a production company–someone had seen my demo and wanted to book me for a gig. Of course I was thrilled! There were two different videos that were going to be commercials on the company’s website. They featured me as the spokesperson, convincing people to sign up for the service and explaining how easy it was. There was zero prep time needed on my part. I showed up the day of the shoot and read the script off of a teleprompter. We did a few takes for each of the videos. Things went smoothly, and I was out in about two hours. And on top of that, I was actually getting paid! A few weeks after the shoot, I got a check in the mail for $200. I was so money, baby! $200 for two hours of work–$100 an hour. It was way more money that I was getting for whatever day job I was working at the time, so I was thrilled. Seems like a great deal, right? Boy was I wrong! Hello, My name is Mia Jones and I will be the stage manager for this production} Post: "The Bloodless Jungle" written by Peter Lawson Jones will be Directed by Christopher Johnston. This play is a full-length political drama that successfully premiered at Ensemble Theatre last fall and has had staged reading across the country since then. WHEN: Tuesday, June 27th and Wednesday, June 28th, 7:00-9:00pm for general auditions. Saturday, July 1st, 1:00-3:00pm for callbacks. WHERE: First Unitarian Church of Cleveland, 2nd Floor, Worship Center, 21600 Shaker Boulevard and Belvoir oval. (Please note that Shaker Blvd is closed between Warrensville Center Rd. and Green Rd. due to construction.) Enter the church from the parking lot behind it, take the stairs to the second floor and turn left. *Please have one dramatic monologue prepared. We will also read sides from the play. *There will be 8 performances ( Thursday - Sunday) between August 10th -20th. *These are Paid roles *Rehearsals will begin Monday, July 10th.

The action is comprised of a mosaic of interrelated scenes—some funny, some touching, some rueful—which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. The actors change roles, personalities and ages with virtuoso skill as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. This July and August we are shooting a very low budget film. We are looking for a few more people to fill small roles for credit only. If you recently submitted to my previous posting, we are still considering you and you should hear back by Sunday. MARK Male, Age 18-22. Deceased boyfriend to the main character. Only seen in old photographs. For this role we just need an actor that will be available for an hour before July 15th to be photographed with lead actors. GIRL #1 Female age 18-25 Has one line. The main character confronts her at a diner after overhearing her make comments about dinosaurs. MR. MCGEE Male, age 50+ Creepy man. Two lines. CUSTOMER Male or female age 55+ Has one line while ordering food at a deli. HILLBILLY Male, age 30+. Wears a mullet wig and rides in a canoe. One line.
