Review of "Cannibal! The Musical" at Blank Canvas Theatre

‘Cannibal!’ at Blank Canvas not for thin-skinned theatergoers Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, American Theatre Critics Association Picasso painted “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” at the age of 26. Dalí completed “The Persistence of Memory” by 27. Michelangelo unveiled a completed “David” when 29. So it is tempting to expect more from 24-year-old Trey Parker’s “Cannibal! The Musical,” since he would later go on to write the Tony Award-winning “The Book of Mormon.” But “Cannibal!” – ever-so loosely based on the true story of a 1870’s Gold Rush travel guide who left his clients dead and partially consumed in the Colorado Territory – is no early masterpiece. It has all of “Mormon’s” distinctively sophomoric humor, sacrilege and political incorrectness but none of the astute satire, tuneful songs and endearing characters that made that show so hugely entertaining. To borrow the key lyric from “Cannibal’s!” second song, the show is “stupid.” As evidence, its opening song – a Rodgers and Hammerstein parody titled “It’s A Shpadoinkle Day” – compares life to a baked potato. Other songs are merely serviceable, which grows tiresome. Nearly every scene ends with an abrupt blackout, which lacks imagination. And characters are broadly and badly drawn, not unlike the acerbic, animated “South Park” TV series that Parker would create four years later. As “South Park” demonstrated, stupid can be great fun when the intentionally low-budget aesthetics, blatant irreverence and gross out humor are embraced, which the production of “Cannibal!” at Blank Canvas Theatre does. Moonstruck Friday, November 16, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. Moonstruck is about a widowed, 37-year-old Italian-American woman who falls in love with her fiancé's estranged, hot-tempered younger brother. A now-classic romantic comedy, it was nominated for six Oscars and won for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay. The film series tickets are $7. Also celebrating: Dr. Randolph P. Laycock 40 Years as Music Director. Program will include aworld premiere of “Celebrations forOrchestra” to be directed by the composer Loris Chobanian to celebrate our two milestones: Our50th Season and Rand Laycock’s 40th anniversary asMusic Director. Performanceswill take place Nov. 1-3 at the historic downtown theater. Students frommultiple Tri-C campuses will perform and work behind the scenes to present theplay on one of the nation’s grandest stages. A View From the Bridge begins at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Seeking Actors for Student Produced Films and Videos! AUDITIONING FOR: a LEAD ROLE in student-produced films and videos, made by Cuyahoga Community College's beginner level film students (an "Intro to Filmmaking" class, taught by Prof. Bruno Tatalovic). Several students who completed this course in previous years – are now proud graduates of Tri-C, and newly established Cleveland film artists, videographers, and crew members on big union films shot in Ohio! :) WHEN: Friday, October 26, anytime between 9:15am and 12:30pm WHERE: Tri-C Campus in Parma, 11000 W Pleasant Valley Rd, (park in "visitor"; walk to central campus area); If lost, ask police officers in hallways to show you G107 room. WHO SHOULD COME: This type of collaboration is perfect for beginner (or intermediate) level actors who need more footage for their first demo-reel. By having a Demo Reel, you will be able to seek industry representation (agent). ABOUT PROJECTS: each of these projects feature 1-2 actors only, and gives you a lot of screen time and dialogue or monologue lines. These are unpaid (collaboration) gigs. Get your first credit, your demo footage, and establish new relationships with like-minded content creators. Also, if you have NO screen acting experience, but you truly BELIEVE that you have what it takes - COME and try out! TIMELINE: These projects are 1 day (half a day) shoots, sometimes in November (based on actors' availability). The students must complete their video editing within 2-3 weeks after their shoot. The videos will be available online when completed and you can ask students for HD download. AUDITION: It's a “walk-in” audition (cold read from our scripts or short personal monologue - if desired).
