*Silent Sky**by Lauren Gunderson* * directed by Curt Arnold * March 9 - 31, 2018 Performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 2pm "Silent Sky" presents the real-life story of Henrietta Leavitt and her co-workers at the Harvard Observatory in the early 20th Century. She and the ladies of her department were “computers” for the male astronomers, doing important research, measurements, and calculations for the men, but getting no credit for their work nor access to Harvard’s telescope, “The Great Refractor.” However, Henrietta and her contemporaries Annie Cannon and Williamina Fleming went on to gain access to the telescope and to make important discoveries of their own. Showing some of the roots of feminism in the United States, the play is ideal for Women’s History Month. These ladies’ stories are similar to others throughout American history, including the “code girls” who deciphered enemy messages during World War II and the female NASA employees, also called “computers,” in the early space program (depicted in the award-winning film “Hidden Figures”). Annie Cannon also became a dedicated suffragette, marching for women’s voting rights. Call for Performers: Spotlights' Cabaret Series 2018 Deadline: Friday, March 9, 2018, 11:59PM, Have a story you want to tell? Think your life is interesting enough to entertain others? Imagine yourself on stage, performing an intimate cabaret in front of a small audience. Sing the songs you love to sing. Do a stand-up comedy routine. Perform a staged reading of that masterpiece you wrote in college. Workshop your amazing one-woman show. One weekend, two performances, endless possibilities! Started in 2010 and returning after a two-year hiatus, the Broadview Heights Spotlights Theater will again offer this unique opportunity to local performers and audiences in 2018. Audience members are invited to bring a bottle of wine to enjoy during Cabaret Series Performances in our intimate venue. With a major upcoming expansion, the Spotlights is using revenue from this Series to outfit a new performance space. Performers will receive a stipend and will be required to sign a contract upon booking. The Broadview Heights Spotlights is located on the Broadview Center Campus, 9543 Broadview Road, Broadview Heights, OH 44147. Previous Cabaret Series performers include Neda Spears, The Oh! That's our philosophy here at Camp Green Lake" AKRON - Weathervane Playhouse is set bring Louis Sachar's Newbery Award-winning Holes to the Founders Theater February 21 - March 4, 2018. Evening performances run Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Sunday performances are at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $16 with special pricing for students and groups of 12 or more. All ticket purchases are subject to additional fees. This production is part of our Weathervane's Emerging Artist series featuring a multi-generational cast. This production of Holes is made possible by a generous donation from Helen Fleming. Based on the Newbery Award-winning young adult mystery/comic novel of the same name - and adapted for the stage by the author himself - Holes tells the story of Stanley Yelnats, a boy who has endured nothing but bad luck thanks to his "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather." His bad luck reaches its peak when he is sent to a juvenile detention camp - all for a crime he did not commit! Stanley and the boys are forced to dig large holes in the dirt every day. Hole by hole, day after day, Stanley and his friend Zero dig their destiny. Richard Morris, Jr., the director of Holes, says of the story: "I was first introduced to Holes when my nieces begged me to rent the movie. Since then, I have been captivated by the story. The boys living at Camp Green Lake have all lived hard-luck lives. Each carries the scars of a world that far-too-often forces kids to confront the harsh realities of homelessness, poverty, abuse, absent authority figures, and illiteracy.
