Cleveland Public Theatre announces 2018/2019 New Play Development Request for Proposals Deadline for submissions has been extended to Monday, June 18th, 2018 CPT's New Play Development CPT's mission is to raise consciousness and nurture compassion through groundbreaking performances and life-changing education programs. CPT's programming agenda is to produce work that is outside the mainstream, offering a much broader range of work available to the Cleveland public and expanding the impact and originality of theatre across the country. CPT strives to make work that is excellent, extraordinary, and nationally competitive. Our new play development programs are based on our years of experience, community input, and key principles of: focusing on artists; valuing diversity of approach, aesthetics, and perspective; and balancing impact with investment. We envision CPT as a nationally recognized hub for the development of new theatre that is extraordinary, edgy, and relevant. We hope to be a model for nurturing local talent in similar sized markets, the most regarded cultivator of new theatre for Cleveland audiences, a laboratory for promising research and investigation, and a launcher of nationally significant new plays. Some playwrights need a director to work with, others just need time in the rehearsal room with their ensemble, or a way to share a short fragment and get feedback. Entry Point is a platform for artists to develop their work in the early stages of creation. CPT will customize its support of projects and provide a festival forum to share that work with the public. Entry Point can include staged readings, works-in-progress, open rehearsals, in-progress installations, and guest panel discussions featuring national leaders of our field in seven venues on the CPT campus. Audiences and artists travel to different stages to experience new work representing a broad spectrum of style, aesthetic, and content. Audition Announcement!!! Auditions will be held at Orrville Community Theater (307 Hostetler Rd Orrville) on Friday, June 22 from 6-9pm and Sunday, June 24 from 2-5pm for “The Odd Couple” by Neil Simon. Auditions are for 18+ All positions at volunteer only, no compensation. This classic comedy opens as a group of the guys assemble for cards in the apartment of divorced Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it's no wonder that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger, who has just been separated from his wife. Fastidious, depressed, and none too tense, Felix seems suicidal, but as the action unfolds, Oscar becomes the one with murder on his mind when the clean freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together with hilarious results as The Odd Couple is born.

Review of "Anything Goes" at Porthouse Theatre

Porthouse’s ‘Anything Goes’ is déjà vu all over again Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Member, American Theatre Critics Association Any production of “Anything Goes” is bound to inspire a sense of déjà vu among audiences. After all, the show has been thrice revived on Broadway since its 1934 premiere, has been on a national tour that came through Playhouse Square in 2012, and – as a thoroughly wonderful piece of escapist entertainment – is the go-to musical for local amateur and professional theaters whenever desperate times call for diversionary measures. “Anything Goes” offers silly scenarios easily resolved, witty conversation shared by enchanting and simply drawn characters, a stage full of willful nonsense performed by a large ensemble, and absolutely delightful music. The show’s music and lyrics by Cole Porter are memorable in their own right, but are made even more so considering that many – like “It’s De-lovely” and “Easy to Love” – have been used in other popular musicals that pre-date or follow “Anything Goes,” and are so good that they have been covered by numerous recording artists the likes of Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra and Lady Gaga. The current production of the show at Porthouse Theatre is particularly familiar because it was also performed in 2008. Yes, Porthouse’s “Anything Goes” is déjà vu all over again. Jazz and Jazzy-Pop Band Looking for Guitar, Keys, and 2nd Female Vocalist

Experienced female jazz singer and veteran jazz bassist starting a new group. We are looking for experienced and dedicated players to form a jazz/pop quintet/sextet to play out 2-4 times a month. The material will include jazz standards, modern jazz/pop (Steely Dan, Sade, etc), and original material. Players must be capable of learning and performing 3 hours of music with limited mistakes (no memorization necessary at this point.) We use Fake Book / Real Book charts and YouTube videos to audition and select songs, but the final the intention is to arrange the songs to our own style (rather than adhere to any strict interpretation of the original material. Sorry Miles...) We are currently looking for a guitarist, keyboardist/pianist, and second female vocalist (early 20s to early 30s preferred for the vocalist). Knowledge of jazz chording, as well as soloing, are deciding factors for the instrumentalists. Practices will be in Mentor, Ohio ( 3-4 hours long / Saturday or Sunday based on member's collective personal schedules.) This is a professional, friendly group with the intention to stay together for a good length of time. The Broadway production of this play was a shattering and memorable experience and proclaimed the author as a major American playwright. "This is a Big One." —NY Journal-American. "…a scorching, scalding, revealing and completely engrossing drama." —Women's Wear Daily. "…a brilliant piece of writing." —NY Herald-Tribune THE STORY: George, a professor at a small college, and his wife, Martha, have just returned home, drunk from a Saturday night party. Martha announces, amidst general profanity, that she has invited a young couple—an opportunistic new professor at the college and his shatteringly naïve new bride—to stop by for a nightcap. When they arrive the charade begins. The drinks flow and suddenly inhibitions melt. It becomes clear that Martha is determined to seduce the young professor, and George couldn't care less. But underneath the edgy banter, which is crossfired between both couples, lurks an undercurrent of tragedy and despair. George and Martha's inhuman bitterness toward one another is provoked by the enormous personal sadness that they have pledged to keep to themselves: a secret that has seemingly been the foundation for their relationship. In the end, the mystery in which the distressed George and Martha have taken refuge is exposed, once and for all revealing the degrading mess they have made of their lives. "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" Opens on Oct. 5th and Closes on Nov. 4th, playing Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Rehearsals will likely begin in late August or very early September. Director Don Carrier seeks four extraordinary actors for this seminal piece. Actors auditioning for George or Martha should be able to convincingly play mid 40's to early 50's. Actors auditioning for Nick or Honey should be able to convincingly play mid 20's to very early 30's. At least 2 AEA contracts are available for this production (Special Appearance:Tier One) No health or accumulated weeks are available for these contracts. Non Equity actors receive a stipend for their participation. What To Prepare: Please prepare one (1) contemporary monologue (1960 to present day) not to exceed 2 minutes in length. This should be memorized. No alternative sides will be provided for this open call. Please arrive at the theatre 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time to fill out some paperwork. Are you a piano player who likes to play big band music ranging from traditional to contemporary? Here is an opportunity to get your foot in the door with an established NE Ohio big band. Prime Time Big Band founded in 1976 rehearses in Gates Mills in the Community Hall on Wednesday Nights from 7:30 - 9:30. We are looking for a piano sub to fill in when our regular piano player is unavailable. There is no pay for a rehearsal sub, we do pay for a gig sub.
