Beck Center’s ‘The Member of the Wedding’ a ruined work Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal There’s something interesting taking place at the Beck Center for the Arts, but it is not Carson McCullers’ “The Member of the Wedding.” Throughout this play, we are told of the interesting people living interesting lives elsewhere and in the past. Off-stage, a marriage takes place, someone gets into trouble with the law, and two people die. We hear the sound of children and musicians playing in the distance. AUTOPOIESIS Written by Oana Leuca Directed by Erik Andrews Synopsis “Autopoiesis” is a short play in absurdist fashion that raises issues of social media addiction, beauty standards, and bullying. The action takes place in a cabaret, where Dana, a 60-year-old dancer, is doing a smokey-eyed tutorial on Facebook, while teaching 14-year-old Ana about the meaning of life. Harassed by the Scale-people, the Canary-beasts, and also by the netizens, Dana’s self-esteem problems worsen. She befriends DontExist, a 30 year-old female writer who thinks she is inside the heart of a giraffe. They lap-dance together, and start reflecting on love and life, while all the other characters around them scroll on their phones or even end up marrying their phones. This is a paid position for $45 for a 90 minute practice session with students at two local recreation centers. This program begins on October 19th and will take place on Saturdays from mid October-May. Unfolding like jumbled snippets of memory, _Homos, or Everyone in America_ is told through interweaving glimpses, jumping around among moments over a five year period in the relationship of a contemporary couple. What does it mean to be in a committed relationship? Is monogamy just monotony? If navigating this isn’t complicated enough, what can happen when, on top of everything else, the couple is unexpectedly confronted by a vicious hate crime? _Homos_ is a fearless, often funny, openly emotional examination of the moments that can bring two people together – or pull them apart. “A daringly frank, funny and affecting new play.
