Weems March 11, 18, and 25, and April 1 (Thursdays) 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Conducted online/remotely via Zoom $120 ($80 for Literary Cleveland members) Finding Peace in the Midst of a Pandemic is an intensive playwriting workshop with a focus on positive monologues and short 2-3-character plays. During the workshop, you will be guided through prompted writings designed to draw from personal experiences, the experiences of family and friends, and/or stories of the pandemic encountered on social media; inspire hope; and remind us of the importance of love and empathy in the face of chaos. You will create and share new drafts with Dr. Weems and the other participants and receive feedback for editing. Recorded in various locations around the area, this virtual production reunites Joshua Fleming and Rosie Bresson, both of whom starred in MTC’s 2018 production at The Hopewell Theatre. The production is directed by Joe Asente with music direction by Savannah Florkowski. Streaming tickets for the production are available before February 26 by visiting millennialtheatre.org and using presale code MTC to unlock the event. Starting February 26, the video can be purchased without a presale code. Streaming access is $20 for a single ticket (single viewer in a single location) and $30 for a family ticket (multiple viewers in one location). Once streaming access is purchased, the streaming code provided will be active for 48 hours after the play button is hit for the first time. The production will be available to stream for a limited time only. The Last Five Years is Jason Robert Brown’s intimate window into a couple’s doomed marriage. Cathy, a struggling actress, and Jamie, a budding novelist on the brink of wild success, are 20-somethings in New York who meet, fall in love, marry, and divorce over the span of five years. Cathy tells the story from the end of their marriage; Jamie begins from when they first meet. As the musical unfolds, Cathy moves backward in time to the beginning of the relationship as Jamie moves toward the end; they meet only once, in the middle, at their wedding. “The Last Five Years has always been one of the most special projects we ever worked on,” said Joe Asente, director and editor of the production, when referring to the original 2018 run at the Hopewell Theatre. “We love working with Josh and Rosie, and they just work so perfectly in these roles. We often joked about doing a concert or singing a song or two for a live stream online, but I never wanted to touch it again unless we had something new to add. When the remote performance rights became available for this show, I knew we had to do it. I could not pass up the opportunity to expand this show in such a unique way. Instead of staging the scene ‘See I’m Smiling’ on a few stage cubes with some blue lighting to suggest a pier, as we did in the original we were able to film directly on a pier on the lake. What director would not want to expand his or her work in a real-world setting?”. Unlike their production of Songs for a New World last fall, which was filmed remotely with actors submitting self-recorded video, The Last Five Years was all filmed by Asente himself in various locations throughout the area. “This is very much a movie version of the musical, rather than just a virtual musical movie-hybrid. Since Josh and Rosie were both local, I was able to be there for every scene and operate the camera, which allowed me to really work with transitions between scenes and get into the details of each number; something I am not able to do when the actors need to self-record.” Join MTC for this virtual production of The Last Five Years beginning February 26. Review: ‘Elliot & Me’ is a love's labor's lost

‘Elliot & Me’ is a love's labor's lost The name Elliot Willensky, which belonged to a middle-class Jewish songwriter from Bayonne, New Jersey, never achieved national recognition. But his songs certainly did. During the ‘70s and '80s, Elliot – a charming, cocky, medical school dropout – penned hit tunes for top artists, including Whitney Houston, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Tony Orlando, Chaka Khan, and The Fifth Dimension. He once pitched a song to the Beatles, which they turned down, but “Got to Be There” appeared on Michael Jackson’s 1972 solo debut album and sold over 3 million copies worldwide. The composer/lyricist died of a stroke in 2010 at the age of 66 and his brother, Steven, has been attempting to secure Elliot’s legacy in an autobiographical, two-man, pop music-infused play co-written with Scott Coulter. In 2011, a reading of “Elliot & Me” premiered in Northeast Ohio – Steven’s wife Judy was born and raised in University Heights – at the Cleveland Institute of Music. A revised version got a staged concert reading at the Idea Center in Playhouse Square in 2014. More recently, the work was primed for a live stage production at Hudson Theatre Works in New Jersey, featuring professional actors Eric Briarley as Elliot and Drew Seigla as Steven. And then the pandemic hit. A production of the show was staged and video recorded this past November, in partnership with Woodstock Theater Group, and will be streamed by the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre this week as a pay-per-view event from February 18 – 21. HINDSIGHT 2020: A YEAR IN RETROSPECT CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS The Access Theatre Project is excited to announce that it is now accepting submissions for its “monologue festival” entitled Hindsight 2020: A Year in Retrospect! The festival will feature original monologues written and submitted by artists and residents of Northeast Ohio and will be presented as a reflection on the events of the past year. The monologues will be filmed in significant locations around Northeast Ohio and will be made available for viewing in Mid-April. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: - Submission Deadline: March 8th, 2021 at 11:55PM; accepted by email: accesstheatreproject(a)gmail.com. Chosen applicants will be notified by March 15th, 2021. - Monologues should be 1-10 minutes in length. - We are seeking submissions of original, unpublished, not previously produced monologues about personal life events that took place in the past 12 months. - Writers are encouraged to draw upon their own personal experiences, or the experiences of a loved one, for subject matter. Examples of monologue subjects we are looking for include: Personal experience with COVID-19, loss of a loved one, teaching/dating/relationships/holidays during COVID-19, healthcare and frontline work in 2020, attending a peaceful protest, creating art/collaborating during the pandemic, voting/participating in the 2020 election, or any other life experiences that YOU have gone through this past year that you feel compelled to share. Comedic monologues on any of these subjecta are strongly encouraged--”always look on the bright side of life”! - Monologues should be written in a first-person narrative format (as you might find in a play). - Submissions may contain musical elements, but writers should be aware that the licensing rights to any songs used within monologues shall be paid by the monologue writer themselves. Original songs within monologues are also welcome. - By submitting your monologue(s), you grant The Access Theatre Project permission to record and perform it for Hindsight 2020: A Year in Retrospect.
