Auditions are not required for anyone wishing to participate as part of the ensemble. WHERE: Avon Lake High School Choir Room WHAT TO PREPARE: 16-32 bars of a musical theatre piece and a 30-second story. Bring sheet music in your key and an accompanist will be provided. No a Capella please. CALLBACKS: By invitation only September 18th 7-10 PM SHOW SPECIFICS: All roles will be filled using Gender-Blind casting. The role of the Narrator will be played by multiple actors. It is the director's goal to engage a large and diverse cast in this family friendly classic. All races, creeds, gender identities, sexual orientations, ages, and body types are encouraged to audition and will be considered for all roles when casting. There are no AEA Contracts available for this production. PERFORMANCES: February 7, 8, 9, 14 and 15 at the Avon Lake High School PAC REHEARSALS: Friday nights from 7-10 PM beginning October 18th at Avon Lake High School MGP rehearses the entire cast once per week on Friday evenings until tech week in February. Western Reserve Playhouse presents “Anne of Green Gables” from the novel L.M. Montgomery, adapted by Joseph Robinette Directed by Brianna Joi Synopsis: This new dramatization captures the charm and excitement of L.M. Montgomery's enduring classic about an orphan girl, Anne Shirley, from her first encounter with her austere guardian to her thrilling graduation from Queen's Academy. The play faithfully recreates the memorable events and characters from the brilliant novel. All the tragedies and triumphs that mark Anne's growth from adolescence to early adulthood are here: her friendship with Diana, her feuds with Gilbert, her adoration of Matthew, the mistaken wine bottle, the cake disaster, the broken leg, scholastic achievements, and the saving of Green Gables. Whether the playgoer is an "old friend" of Anne's or meeting her for the first time, this play will solidify a lasting friendship between the audience and one of literature's most unforgettable characters. The star studded cast is lead by Molly Kessler (Anne), Harriet DeVeto (Marilla), Tenley Stitzer (Diana), and Stephen Morse (Matthew). Western Reserve Playhouse auditions for Happy Hollandaise! By Tim Koenig Directed by Ian Atwood Synopsis: All Claire Finley wants is the perfect Christmas. She’s hired the celebrated gourmet chef Vilma Hasenpfeffer to prepare her famous Hasenpfeffer Hollandaise Sauce for her dinner guests — the new vicar and his very pregnant wife, Mary. Unfortunately, however, the chef is late, the guests are early and there are burglars loose in the neighborhood. To top it all off, Claire’s father has been hit on the head (with the crèche, no less!) and thinks he’s the leading man in all of the West End theatre productions of the last 30 years! With the help of her quirky brother George, Claire tries to keep everything together as it continues to unravel in this sidesplitting British farce reminiscent of Arsenic and Old Lace. But once the mayhem dies down and the mixed-up identities unscramble, the true Christmas spirit shines bright in a surprise ending, which involves transformation, forgiveness, and a beautiful new beginning. Young Directed by Ashley Aquilla Synopsis The Korean war has ended, and men have been returning home. Doreen’s husband Army, however, has not come back as of three years after his discharge. It's only after Doreen finally meets a love interest that Army returns, different than when he left and displaying serious issues. Although their marriage died with Army's desertion, Doreen still feels obligated to him. Meanwhile, Odessa, Doreen’s mother and co-owner of O&D’s Boarding House, feels an undying need to save the orphaned doo-wop singers that meet under the streetlight. However, the adage ‘boys will be boys’ threaten the young singers' livelihoods. Their talent is their only hope for a brighter tomorrow. Market St., Akron 44304* Sony Ton-Aime is a Haitian poet, essayist, and translator. He holds an MFA in poetry from the NEOMFA (Kent State University) program in Ohio. He is the author of one chapbook, LaWomann (Ironworks Press, 2019), and the upcoming translation of the book Olympic Hero: The Lennox Kilgour’s Story in Haitian Creole. He is the co-founding editor of ID13 -- a chapbook and online publication. He has been awarded fellowships from the Wick Poetry Center and the Chautauqua Literary Arts Center. His work (poems, essays, fiction) centers around his home country, and its place in the current postcolonial era. He is interested in troubling the idea of tradition -- experimenting with European poetic and literary forms thrust upon Haitians so that he may subvert them in favor of possible alternatives, better suited to rendering his experience through a decolonized lens. ‘Shakespeare’s R & J’ at con-con a muddled retelling of the classic tragedy Bob Abelman Cleveland Jewish News, The News Herald, The Morning Journal Shakespeare’s tragic love story “Romeo and Juliet” has proven itself to be a particularly pliable and resilient piece of work. Its story has, among other things, been retold through dance by the Royal Ballet and as an opera at the Théâtre Lyrique, turned into a musical by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim (“West Side Story”), and made into movies featuring zombies (“Warm Bodies”), martial artists (“Romeo Must Die”) and CGI garden figurines (“Gnomeo & Juliet”). Joe Calarco’s abridged reimagining, “Shakespeare’s R & J,” is true to the Elizabethan telling in that it is in play form and features an all-male cast. But it is particularly inspired by a line found in Act 2, Scene 2 of the text – “Love goes toward love as schoolboys from their books” – for this tale is told by four boys late at night in the dormitory of a repressive Catholic boarding school. This is an intriguing addition to the Shakespeare-inspired canon, but its lengthy run Off-Broadway suggests that it is a better play than what con-con has put into production.
