Join us starting August 6th for the Detroit Shoreway Youth Chorus! This chorus is an out-of-school time program for youth ages 8 - 14. It will focus on teaching healthy vocal techniques, and also integrate music literacy, movement, and percussion. Kids will sing new music as well as traditional with a fresh, Near West Theatre approach! Rehearsals will meet twice a week: Tuesdays & Thursdays: 4 - 5:30pm. As with all NWT programs, participation in the Detroit Shoreway Youth Chorus is free. Lights, camera, inspire! The kids of the Lakewood Young Filmmakers Academy Summer Filmmaking Camp are ready for their close-up. After two grueling weeks of writing, directing and editing their movie, they’ll get to walk the red carpet July 25 at the Capitol Theatre in Gordon Square. For a third consecutive year, 40 aspiring filmmakers ages 8-17 have come together in the sweltering July heat to produce “The Lunch Bunch” a funny and touching tale of mystery with a little nod to the widely popular “Stranger Things”, Marvel Comics and 1940s film Noir all rolled into one. The camp, which was held at Harding Middle School in Lakewood, is part of the Lakewood City Schools Department of Recreation and features mentors from such films as The Avengers, Captain America, Fate of the Furious, Made in Cleveland, Anhedonia and more. With post-production completed, the kids will get dressed to the nines and walk the read carpet before a premiere in front of what we hope is a sold out house. The event is open to the public and tickets ($10.50) are still available but are selling out fast. KentState Trumbull Theatre to hold auditions for “See No Beast, Hear No Beast, Speak No Beast.” Inspired by variations of the fairytale, Beauty and the Beast, See No Beast, Hear No Beast, Speak No Beast is the story of a hearing man who is against the use of sign language and tends to think of deaf people as sub-human. This is also the story of a beautiful deaf woman who enriches her deaf students' lives by teaching with sign language. The story explores the meanings of "beauty" and "beastliness", with the help of a spell-casting witch. The central mission of this production is to encourage deaf and hearing, signing and signing-impaired, to learn to work together to create a positive and memorable experience for all. The play will be directed by guest artist James "Joey" Caverly. Caverly is an improv veteran, an actor who has worked on Broadway (Children of a Lesser God) and television (Chicago Med). Recently, he directed an ASL/English version of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet for Community College of Baltimore County Community Theatre. Auditions will be held at Kent State Trumbull’s Theatre August 14 and 15 at 7:00 p.m. The play has roles for both signers (on-stage) and speakers (some on-stage, others off-stage voice-over).
