Playwrights Local presents its second workshop with Literary Cleveland! Registration is open for this four-session course beginning Thursday, September 8th, at Waterloo Arts in North Collinwood. This hands-on workshop will be led by Playwrights Local’s Director in Residence Dale Heinen, who’s previously taught playwriting at universities and theaters in London and Brazil. Dale’s work in new-play development includes many years as staff dramaturg and associate at Soho Theatre, a premiere new writing theater in London’s West End. In addition, Dale’s teaching is informed by extensive experience as a director in Chicago, Cleveland, New York, London and Glasgow. Entitled “Finding the Spark,” this workshop is equally appropriate for those who have written a play and for those new to playwriting. Each week will delve into a different element of the craft: language, theatricality, character, and story. Every session will give you the chance to produce new work through in-class writing prompts, and offer you opportunities to receive feedback on new or old work. By the end of the four-session workshop, you will have gained a wide range of entry points for generating a play, enhanced your craft, and attained a clearer view of the theatrical and personal points of view that inform your work as a playwright. Ohio Shakespeare Festival's first production at our new indoor theatre at Greystone Hall in Akron will take place this October. Title will be announced first week of September. Directed by Tess Burgler, Fight Choreography by Ryan Zarecki. We are seeking three featured ensemble actors (male or female) who are primarily fighters/swordsmen. Much fight choreography to learn in a short rehearsal process. Must be athletic/coordinated, previous fight experience a major plus. Stipend for all performers. CLEVELAND PLAY HOUSE (CPH) HOLDING A CHRISTMAS STORY AUDITIONS FOR CHILDREN OF ALL RACES/ETHNICITES Cleveland Play House (CPH) is casting children ages 7-12, of all races and ethnicities, for its production of A Christmas Story, directed by John McCluggage. All positions are paid. Auditions are by appointment only. For BOYS AND GIRLS: Auditions will be held FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 9th from 5:30pm-8:30-pm & SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 10th from 10:00am-2:00pm. FINAL CALLBACKS: will be held on SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 10th from 3:00pm-6:00p.m. Auditions will take place in CPH's rehearsal spaces, located on the fifth floor of the Middough Building, at 1901 E. 13th Street in Downtown Cleveland. Performers will audition with sides from the script, which will be sent when an appointment is set. Please note that children who will be 13 or older on 12/23/16 are ineligible to audition Rehearsals begin on Tuesday, November 1st, and will be held after school and on weekends, Tuesday-Sunday. The week of November 21st rehearsals will be during school hours. There will be no rehearsal on Thanksgiving Day. Performances are 8 shows a week from Nov. 25th - Dec. 23rd. Children will miss part or all of nine school days for rehearsal and performances. Characters: Ralphie - (9-12) Obsessed with planting the seeds to assure the ultimate Christmas present: a genuine Red Ryder BB gun. Has a wild imagination, is unsure of his feelings for Esther Jane, and is persistent, curious, and dramatic. Flick - (9-12, any race/ethnicity) One of Ralphie's best friends. A follower who is easy to pick on. Can't resist the triple dog dare and gets his tongue stuck to a lamppost. Has a sore arm. Also plays a Desperado. Schwartz - (9-12, any race/ethnicity) Another of Ralphie's buddies. He likes trouble. He's a little more on the ball than Flick and gets him to do things he probably shouldn't. Also plays a Desperado. Esther Jane -(9-12, any race/ethnicity) Has a crush on Ralphie. Sweet, girly and likeable. Best friends with Helen. Helen - (9-12, any race/ethnicity) Smartest girl in class. Likes to talk politics and gossip. Best friends with Esther Jane. Randy - (7-10) Ralphie's mischievous little brother who has a true fascination with Santa. Has to use the restroom at inopportune times. Ability to focus and to be still a plus. Hollywood Producer, Director, Actor Martin Carlton is bringing his theme park experience from Universal Studios Hollywood and Knott’s “Scary” Farm to write, direct and produce Mapleside Farms first ever LIVE STAGE SHOW. Fun and adventure with a little singing and dancing, The Princess and the Pumpkin tells the heart warming tale of Princess Melrose, who, despite having strong but hidden feelings for farm hand, Patch Greenleaf, is told by her father, King Orchard, that she must marry the scheming Sourseed in order to save the Kingdom of Mapleside. With the help of animal friends and Paisley Pumpkin, Sourseed’s true plan is revealed, justice prevails and love blossoms.
